  1. We're reading Farmer Boy, and love it. Especially all the food. ;)
  2. Love gutenberg! Sometimes it's nice to get the extra commentaries in these editions, and to know the formatting is going to be fine, though. So when they're free, I snatch them up. :001_smile:
  3. Click on the book covers in the link. You will be directed to the b&n page to download the book. You will be asked to log in to your b&n account for the first one. After you've downloaded a book, it will automatically show up on your nook as long as the wifi is on.
  4. My mom is my best source. I also like to browse through the Barnes & Noble lists, such as top 100, new & noteworthy, etc. And if there's something I already like, seeing the related titles on amazon is fun. I don't manage a book a week right now either, but a million picture books a week are no problem. I used to enjoy reading the book reviews in the Sunday paper, but haven't for a while.
  5. I have a Hoover LiNX cordless stick vac. I'm happy with it. I mean, it's not as powerful as a big corded vac, but for a lightweight cordless, it does a good job. You can turn the spiin brush on/off as you go, which is great for going from wood to area rug. It swivels and turns easily. I do have to pick up scraps of paper and whatnot that a bigger vac might suck up. But it gets the dog hair, dirt, playdoh bits, and cheerios just fine. We've had it at least a year.
  6. http://the-cheap.net/2011/08/23/ten-freebie-bn-classics/ Just in case anyone is interested, these nook books are available for free right now. They are not all obvious on the b&n site, so here is a blog post (not mine) that has links for each one.
  7. Cooking tomato based, and other acidic, foods in cast iron is the best way to get some extra iron into your food. I always cook spaghetti sauce and chili in cast iron. I do have to season again after acidic foods sometimes, but haven't had a problem with tasting previous meals. Then again, I do have a separate griddle pan, so savory pancakes wouldn't come up, I guess. ;) OP, you can lightly oil the pan, then leave it in a 200 oven overnight, or all afternoon, etc. Or you can just barely heat it over the stovetop for a few hours. By all means, wash with soap first.
  8. Seasoning is really easy, so I'd do it to be sure. Olive oil works really well. Cast iron is the best. I have cast iron everything. Sometimes I wash with soap if really needed, but a quick scrub without soap helps keep the seasoning. Enjoy!
  9. I wouldn't take him in because of his lungs unless they worsen considerably. Hives are strange and irritating, but not as serious as a lung infection. Did your ILs have a different detergent, or Christmas tree, or? Legs only could still be an allergic reaction. I had a terrible time with DS2 when he was a baby, figuring out a bad case of hives that were worst on his legs and feet. It was a food reaction though. And just a quick p.s.: grapes can be very bad for dogs. ;)
  10. The above-linked review hits every important point, I think. Definitely read that. It is comparing the fire to the nook tab, and you mentioned the nook color. The tab is a bit faster and has a little more memory than the color, iirc, but otherwise the color does almost everything the tab does. If you have amazon prime, and are usually in range of wifi to access the cloud, the Fire might be good for you. If not, the nook might be. I personally adore my nook color. It is an amazing little device, very well designed, and perfect for what I wanted. I've needed the instore help a few times too, so that has been a bonus for me. Good luck deciding.
  11. Is a membership to the Legoland Discovery Center (Schaumburg) worthwhile for a 5yo and 2yo? I was looking at their website to get an idea of the activities. I couldn't tell how adventurous and/or scary some things are. My guys don't enjoy anything very loud or wild. Membership is bogo until the 31st, and I am trying to figure out if it would be a good indoor spot to go when the weather is ugly. Thanks!
  12. Nat Geo Little Kids has no ads and is liked here. Nat Geo Kids has ads, and I don't like it. Wild Animal Babies, Big Backyard, and Ranger Rick are great. I love all the Cricket magazine family, but we get them from the library. I also just found Time for Kids available on my nook color. Apparently it used to only be available through schools. Not sure if it's available in a print edition now as well, but it looks quite nice.
  13. I asked the members of a group I'm in, and one person says she joined the Free Philadelphia Library. She says the wait lists for popular titles can be long. She has waited for books for three weeks before, and has seen wait times that are longer. Your wait list has a limit of 10 titles. And you can keep a book 7, 14, or 21 days depending on the title. Hope that helps. My local library does not have ebook lending yet, but I could pay to join the Chicago system for ebooks. If your local library or a nearby system has ebook lending, you might be fine with that. I have heard the selection is quite large through Philadelphia, which is why it is popular.
  14. Is it the Cabela's one? If so, then it's the one my sister gave my son. At this point, he only plays the shooting gallery which has different game such as ducks, geese, rabbits, deer, buffalo. There are also mountain lions and bears, and if you don't kill them, they kill you, and there's a claw mark on the screen. This scared my DS, so he sticks to the herbivores. I don't know how graphic the other play options are, but I do think you can be attacked.
  15. There you go! Honestly, maybe the kindle can use this now as well. I don't know enough about kindle to speak on it. When I bought my nook, kindle couldn't access library books. Now it can, but I don't know if it has the same access or not. And not sure about audiobooks. I've downloaded some audiobooks from libravox and played them on the nook. P.S. nook has pandora!
  16. I have nook color. My sister has the nook app on her ipad. We can share the lend-me titles. As far as I know, she can also download the weekly free friday offering, but she hasn't tried. The free friday offerings are what they are. I've gotten a bunch of books I've enjoyed, a few that were just ok, and I've passed on plenty. B&N offers a service where you can read almost any book without purchasing it, but you have to be in the store and can only read for an hour per day. Personally, I think this is pointless unless you worked next door to a B&N and took your lunch break there every day. :tongue_smilie: On the other hand, with a nook, you can pay $15 or so per year to be a member of the Philadelphia (IIRC) library, and borrow tons of books. Your local library may offer elending too. This should work on your ipad as well. There are not tons of free apps for nook, but so far I've liked the selection and haven't found them too expensive. The only ones I'd like, but haven't purchased due to cost, are the Audubon field guides. The nook kids picture books are great if you have littles, but you can get them on ipad nook app too. One of my favorite features is magazines, but I believe you can subscribe to many of the same ones on ipad or fire. Nook color has flash player and netflix, which are great. I read somewhere that nook uses a better processor than kindle, but I know nothing about tech stuff. I adore my nook color, but it's probably six of one, half dozen of the other.
  17. That's hysterical! DS5 tried to go straight to bed from the dinner table. I managed to stretch him until 7:30ish. He didn't fall asleep right away, and hopefully won't wake up too too early.
  18. This year we started a new tradition that the boys get to open their gifts to each other on Christmas Eve. They were so cute! DS5 kept hugging his little brother, telling him it was the best gift ever. And DS2 kept saying, "Look, Mom, look!" We also put one gift for each boy under the little tree in their bedroom to tide them over until DH gets home in the morning. This is our first year for this too, and we may continue it whether DH works Christmas or not in the future.
