volunteering backstage for a show: need advice
mamakelly replied to morningcoffee's topic in The Chat Board
Oh and baby wipes! Baby wipes are a must. I encourage all of my kids to do their own makeup and lipstick (mine are level 2 and up, so 9 ish). They are supposed to have full make up done but not lipstick. They put that on after the costume is on. Some kids are great with lipstick, others need it fixed lol. Baby wipes come in handy for lipstick fixes. -
volunteering backstage for a show: need advice
mamakelly replied to morningcoffee's topic in The Chat Board
I run one of the dressing rooms for our ballet school with 50+ kids in it. It's an exhausting volunteer job, but I love it. Most kids will be prepared and bring their own stuff to do. Most bring iPads lol. I bring a basket with some games that they all know they are allowed to use. I talk to all of them at the beginning of the run and make they know to put everything away when it's their turn to go on stage. Last show I brought; Cards games like old maid, and go fish from the dollar spot at target, even the teenagers like them. Themed coloring pages for whatever show were working on nutcracker coloring pages during the nutcracker show etc. and colored pencils- no markers! A bag of cats cradle strings and instructions. Games like Connect 4, Set, Digital scrabble Target has paper pads with that dot game where you take turns making lines to make a box. I bring a large flat sheet and two hangers with clips on them to make a changing area. Typically the girls just change in the dressing room, but my younger ones (9-10) tend to be pretty modest, so I try to hang up the sheet to give them some privacy. I also bring a large fuzzy blanket because the floor in our dressing room is tile. My biggest issue is kids not keeping their stuff together. I've had to find an extra leotard to send kids home in, because somehow they lost theirs. It ended up in someone else's bag because they dropped it on the floor instead of putting everything back in their bag. The last show I did I had one girl missing a shoe and had to go home with only one shoe on. The director of the program makes me a fill in the blank type note that I keep in the dressing room. When I have kids forget things like a bag big enough to hold all their stuff, their lipstick etc.… I write a note home to the parent to remind them. The kids are kept fairly busy, with getting their costumes on and off, and performing. Oh that's another thing, make sure you teach them all how to hang up their costumes. The experience ones will already know but the new ones may not know what to do. I've had some kids just drop their costume on the ground and think that they can go home. We've had costume pieces get misplaced, so I've had to be extra vigilant about costumes. It's a wonderfully rewarding job and I adore all the girls in my dressing room. Hope it goes well for you. -

mamakelly replied to ...................'s topic in The Chat Board
I don't think I'd survive without a Trader Joes. -
My kids call them Miss- first name. We refer to them as our EF- educational facilitator.

Do you think this would effect an individual's employability?
mamakelly replied to Daria's topic in The Chat Board
I have a friend who does stunt work. She had to wear those red contacts for a vampire movie she worked on, and the said they were really hard to see out of. I can't imagine anyone working a typical job with them on. -
I think it's pretty common interest among teen boys, especially Boy Scouts. My scout buys a new knife everyone he goes to camp, lol. If he's acting inappropriately with them at camp, he will loose a corner of his tote'n chit. If he continues to be unsafe with knives, he will lose the tote'n chit completely, and they won't allow him to bring a knife on a trip.

My dd potty trained at 15 months. She would scream when we tried to put her diaper. She was fully trained at home, and often I had her wear pull-ups when we were out, jic. I kept a baby bjorn potty in my car for emergencies.

Need opinion... Public or Christian High School?
mamakelly replied to Michelle My Bell's topic in The Chat Board
My brother got into drugs at a Christian High school. It's everywhere. Don't make your choice based on thinking Christian school won't have drugs, it will. I vote public. She will find her crowd of people, and will love the art classes. -

History of US audio (Joy Hakim) is incredible!
mamakelly replied to Nestof3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My dd listened to them last year through the library, with one click digital. -
DD needs a semester of health. I've looked at Total Health, and it doesn't seem in-depth enough. The reviews I read said it didn't cover drugs at all? So I guess I'm looking for suggestions other than Total Health, LOL.

Take a break from math to learn math facts?
mamakelly replied to mykidsrmyjoy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Normally I would say not to take a break to memorize math facts, but 7 years old and in 3rd grade? She's really young for 3rd. My son will be 3rd this school year, and he's 8, turning 9 in Nov. Maybe a math break would do her some good and give her a chance to mature a bit. -
Is dry food really that bad for them? I thought it was better than cheap wet food...

You can keep 5 items per child over the summer if you plan to use it still or reuse with another child. But when you leave the school permanently, all non consumables have to be returned. On the flip side of that, you can get most non-consumables for free from the school. It's a win win.

Tongue tie surgery in elem age children*Need quick advice*
mamakelly replied to Beaniemom's topic in The Chat Board
I've had 3 kids with tounge ties. 2 clipped by a doctor and one by an oral surgeon with a laser. As long as the dentist had done it before, I'd go with the dentist. -
I think you need counseling asap. I don't see this ending well for anyone without professional help.

We don't have cable and I don't want to get it, just for the Olympics. We have connected an antenna box to our to before, but we have a new smart tv that doesn't connect to the old box. Any ideas?

We used the same method snickerplum laid out. It works very well. Honestly at 3.5, you just need to do it. No fuss, just block out a week and focus only on potty training.
