  1. I live in Boston just off the Boston Marathon race course. It is still pouring here in buckets and almost freezing. Took a raincheck (lol) to watch the marathon this year. I feel so bad for those running it this year....
  2. However, if we are fleeing for our lives (I am Jewish and yes, I have this planned out). We can bug out with just our devices and our go-bags with our IDs, passports, money, etc. If we had to leave the devices, we could do that too, since most of the important stuff is in the cloud. Oh, I'd take my jewelry, both for sentimental reasons and if I had to, to sell. IRL, we evacuated from Hurricane Katrina thinking we'd be gone just three days. We took our marriage contract (it's framed and very pretty and necessary for us to cohabitate according to Jewish law), three days of clothing (and one fancy outfit each), a crockpot, my cooking knives, toy trains to keep the little ones occupied, and our library books we could not return as they has closed off the return bins.
  3. I've done this many times. If I am going to be in a first world location that I can source all the home good type stuff and I know I am going "home" eventually , I'll take my family members, my devices (phone, Kindle, computer), school books, some Judaica (kiddush cup, Havdala candle, Shabbos candlesticks), minimum of Jewish books to create a feasible library, foodstuff I cannot get in that country, and that's about it. In reality-ville (we move to Japan every two or three years for a year at a time)a I bring clothing, toys, books, and some assorted sundries as well, but I don't *need* them. It's just cheaper to bring them as free luggage than to buy them.
  4. I am having a hard time with the font now. I used to be able to read the forums on my Fire while running. It's too hard now as the font is too skinny or something. The brightness of the page also obscures the writing somehow.
  5. May you all find peace no matter what happens. I'm so very sorry for your pain.
  6. Vibram Five Fingers are often on sale at around $35-$45 on Leftlane Sports and their sister site. I get mine there.
  7. Make sure you get there at least one hour, better a bit more than that unless you KNOW you are flying from a small airport. If so, one hour is more than sufficient. Don't wear lots of jewelry/metal so you don't have to take it all off. Try to wear shoes/coats/jackets that are easy to remove and put back on quickly. Take something to read or do if you get through security more quickly than you thought. Be aware that the airline might move the gate from which you will depart so don't get too engrossed in your leisure activity! If you are in a later boarding group (usually 4 or 5 or a later letter in the alphabet) know that you might have to gate check your carryon. If you do, make sure you ask whether to pick it up as you leave the plane or at the baggage carousel. Have a great time!
  8. If you have a smartphone with you can download Google Translate and even download French to use offline if that will make you feel better. Have a great time!
  9. I never pay extra for my 3D mammo, but since I had a sister who died from BC last year and an aunt who also had BC early in life, perhaps it is seen as necessary.
  10. Hornblower, I am happy to hear you are under good care. May your team (MDs, family, and friends) surround you with love and support while you fight like hell!
  11. What's the difference between this and TVP?
  12. It's cheesy but I love Emerald Isle. You can eat at the Sanitary Market and enjoy the beautiful beaches.
  13. Everyone here has given you good advice. Use your countertop appliances (crockpot, IP, rice cooker, etc) to make food. Use throw away utensils and plates. The "princess" has to heal and her family needs to be glad she isn't having more complicated issues and much more down time or worse, G-d forbid.
  14. NC bred (not born): Steep, but for LONG time, so that the tea gets really dark and tannic.
  15. I just bought some more elderberries last month at the regular price (around $18/lb). Now they are selling for $69.00 for two pounds!!!
  16. I am praying for your family and the eternal soul of your daughter. Your remembrance of her is full of the love that only a mother can embody.
  17. Can anyone get you elderberry syrup? I started it every two hours when I woke up on Sunday morning with fever and chills, headache, sneezing, and runny nose. It was definitely NOT a cold. I felt 30% better Monday, 50% Tuesday, and 90% better yesterday. I even got on the treadmill on Wednesday! Back to my normal routine today.
  18. In my husband's case he was accused of racism (even though I am (half) the same nationality) and heterophobia from another member of the committee who is gay.
  19. My husband (a professor) was sued for this very thing. A non-US student repeatedly plagiarized for smaller papers and then his pre- dissertation work. He got busted by my husband in committee. The guy stalked the professors on his committee, sent his wife and children to do the same and made threats. The university wouldn't back the professors. He got the PhD.
  20. I just want to live longer than my parents. They lost my younger sister last year and i couldn't bear them losing their only other child. I will be able to handle their deaths. I don't want them to suffer like that ever again.
  21. Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream now that Costco discontinued its lotion (sob!)
  22. Our Toyota Sienna does that. I have to remember each winter before it gets below 30 to grease up the black rubber gaskets to keep the doors working.
  23. A friend of mine does. Plaid skirts and bow ties all!
  24. I am sorry that this is happening to your friend, but I am grateful to you for asking how to support her. My sister just died one year ago of Stage four breast cancer. She asked her good friends to visit her, call her when they couldn't come over, let her bake for them on her good days. She was an extreme extrovert so those things made her feel good. Your friend may not feel that way, so please ask her and her closest support network how you can help. They may ask for you to take up chores to free up their time or to help take her places like chemo or doctor appointments. They may ask you to come over and be with her while they get other tasks done. Whatever they ask that you can do is a blessing to them and to you too.
