  1. I have to admit...my dh usually recognizes them for me! What I mean to say is that I, too, go off on tangents, trying this curriculum and that, and trying to piece together that elusive "perfect" curriculum. He realizes my limits by saying...just find something you love, buy it, and don't worry about the cost. Your being stressed is not worth the $$ we may or may not save in the long run. So....here I sit, adding things to my cart on SL and getting ready to sell MUS because I love SL and MUS (though highly touted) is boring my 4yo dd to death. She much prefers her Singapore and Abeka workbooks. Sounds like you have a pefect plan for your family! :001_smile:
  2. And here is another link from WTM. It is SWB's article. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/charlotte-mason-education/ I also like Queen Homeschool for the early years. We just got Language Lessons for Litle Ones, Volume One, and my dd LOVES it! Very little writing, lots of narration.
  3. Can you tell me where he is going, maybe via PM? We live in Alabama...maybe we can help? Just a thought. A few years ago, we, too lived in a fifth wheel. We followed dh for a job that was four months long and didn't know what we were doing after that! We left home with a raggedy pop-up camper, found a friendly individually owned campground and stayed there for a month or so in that pop-up. They had a tenant abandon an Airstream so we rented that for $85/week, then we upgraded to a fifth-wheel they had there for $100/week. We were poor as church mice, but it was on a river and some of our fondest hsing memories are there! I taught my ds how to fish, how to skin and clean a catfish, how to scale/clean/filet a bass, how to bait a hook, how to drop a cane pole in the water and how to cast a rod & reel. Dh taught him how to run a boat (we borrowed from the owners), how to tie knots, how to kill a snake...and so much more that I cannot recall. I agree with everyone else...GO! My own MIL told me NOT to go with my dh. I went and I have never regretted it.
  4. Yup, me too! My ds graduated on May 14, and is living in Florida with MIL for the summer. He moves into a furnished apartment on August 16 with a friend that has no family support. We have TWO of them to buy for! My list is a mile long & growing daily! We have enlisted relatives & close friends for donations of things they may be getting rid of. Hope we can swing it! :D
  5. I found this on the WTM site which indicates its coming....eventually! http://www.welltrainedmind.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/fll_online_2009.pdf
  6. I have never heard of it being *that* excessive, but yes, we had to meet standards as well. One way to combat that is to offer to make an allotment for the rent. Many landlords/owners/property mgmt companies will take this is lieu of that amount of income. Finally we decided to buy....best thing we ever did! We would have spent $72,000 in rent in four years! That is insane when you think about it! Now our mortgage payment is less than our rent was, we have a bigger house, and it is brand new.
  7. :iagree: This is SOOOO true! Personally, we do have several math programs around. However, when dd asks to "do school" I let her choose. They are all in a bin together and she picks which one she wants to do. She is only four (this past March), and though she seems to be doing well with the books, we also work with manipulatives, counting, sorting, and patterning. I am in no rush. This time is very fleeting, and she learns a lot from helping me cook, bake, etc. If you don't have $$ for another curriculum, but like it laid out, I agree with the Beechick books. Another that is laid out but not workbooky (is that even a word??) is the What Your Kindergartener Needs to Know book. It tells you all the things they need to know, and how to teach them. Then it is laid out (I like mine laid out, too!), but can be gotten from the library. Blessings on your journey!
  8. All of these seem similar in content and style to me. I would prefer a program that is completely laid out, I do not like lesson planning. I also would *prefer* a program I can do all the way through. We switched a lot with ds, and it caused issues which we wish to avoid this time. Please tell me what you think and why. If there is another program you prefer, let me know that as well. I am looking for something COMPLETE...spelling, writing, grammar, penmanship, vocab, comprehension. I know I would have to order separate books, but want to use one company, kwim? I prefer this type of LA (classical). Please advise. Thanks!
  9. Wow....you all are really organized and plan ahead! I just buy what I need whenever. I do sell what I don't/didn't use, but that goes back into Paypal and just stays there for...whatever! The allotment/draw sounds like a fabulous idea! If I did that, and then put any Paypal earnings there as well (that I didn't spend, lol), it would make much more sense. I think I will look into that this coming week. Trying to get finances organized for ds's college anyway, might as well do it all at one time!
  10. :iagree: My ds saw it about 12 or so as well, and has since watched it on his own more than once. It is a great movie, as is We Were Soldiers. Both about the same gore/themes (for content) but both moving about the respective wars.
  11. I actually found it when looking for the WW books as referenced in the WEM. Trying to brush up and improve myself! :tongue_smilie:
  12. :grouphug: Thanks SO SO SO much, and do not ever think your gratitude goes unnoticed. My dh is an Iraq War vet and is partially disabled. I attended more than my share of memorial services for soldiers while he was deployed. My father served in 'Nam, and to his day both he and my dh have emotional baggage on top of their physical scars. I (and my dh) appreciate you! :patriot:
  13. I try not to buy too far ahead. We will be using SL as our core through high school. We prefer to buy new so that I don't have to search for books. We will be using them with both dd's and possibly others if God chooses to give us more children. For other subjects, I am honestly not certain of what we are using except for K, so there is no reason to buy ahead! :tongue_smilie: When I had my older ds at home (and when I finally decide what I am using with current dd's), I (will) did buy ahead if I saw (see) a great deal, but it would have to be more than 50% off, or a better deal than I could find looking. Say for instance if I was using Saxon, I would check several ads to see what the "going rate: was. If I then saw a deal like more than 25% of that price, I would buy. I don't really have a budget for hsing. If we need something, I get it. If we don't, I don't. I have bought and sold quite a bit, as I am a hands-on sort of person and like to look/touch/feel before using. Some things I could not find at a curriculum fair, or could not get to the fair itself. However, it has given me a good idea of what I want to use, and what I don't. This time, since I am somewhat starting over, there will not be a lot of buying and selling going on. I will make a choice and stick with it, unless there is a major upheaval that makes me change.
  14. I think part of the decision depends on what sort of person you are. I have a touch of OCD and like things orderly and organized. I looked at the boxes they come in but I cannot stand all of the colors being mixed up. To me the boxes make them easier to use because they are already sorted. I have two of the boxes with them all neatly organized and my four-year-old loves to sort them back into their proper slot.
  15. LOL...I find this hilarious! All of my neighbors think I am nuts for hsing, as do some of my friends! It's great to know that someone else "feels" this, too!
  16. Have to go with internet! Coffee is a laxative and my littlest dd has a sensitive stomach. Since I am breastfeeding, she gets a stomachache when I drink coffee. Had to take a leave of absence from Starbucks! Bad for the psyche, good for the wallet! :tongue_smilie:
  17. It's YAY, just like you said! Yea....is like, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death," etc... Yeah, is like, "Yeah, whatever." This from an English major, working on my Master's. Don't feel silly! :)
