  1. Abeka & Singapore. My ds started with Abeka in 3rd grade after we pulled him out of private school. We had to start about 2/3 of they was through the 2nd grade book (which I had been forewarned about) because of the level of teaching in the schools. We started Singapore in 4th grade, and used them in conjunction 7th. We then switched to TT. I think all of the drill in Abeka helped my ds, because when we switched to TT, he declared it easy. I switched because dh deployed, I was pregnant with serious morning (all day) sickness, and I could not sit long enough to teach him. As we all know, every child is different and has different learning styles. We have to figure out what works for each of our children. My ds is using both and doing quite well. She just turned four this past March and is working through Singapore EB and Abeka K (having already completed Abeka's K2 and K3 books). We skipped Abeka's K4.
  2. That I keep hearing about? I cannot seem to locate it. Thanks for helping...new to the forums! :tongue_smilie:
  3. I agree with this wholeheartedly! The WTM recommendations for K are actually simple if you live teaching. My dd helps me cook, bake, clean, etc., and normally does some sort of "school" each day, but we don't do everything daily. We read a lot, but other than that, things are mostly taken on a how ti comes basis. For example, today we were baking cookies, so we learned about measuring. When we speaks and uses improper grammar or pronunciation, I simply correct her. Her science for now is growing some plants with her daddy, and reading books. and whatever daily science she may encounter such as insects, birds, etc. We don't want to overwhelm her or become one of those parents that are pushing too hard. School will get serious soon enough! When I started 11 years ago, I ordered every catalog I could get my hands on and started looking for online reviews and talking to people, just like you are. I am sure you will make great choices for your babies! :)
  4. I am a current SL user, who plans to stick through the elementary years at least. I would love to hear more as well, especially before I order my next core!
  5. :iagree:This is SOOO true!! My ds is actually glad he is done hsing, because we have moved so much with the military that he gets tired of being singled out as "that hsed kid" until everyone (meaning his peers) can figure out that he is perfectly normal! My 4yo ds already responds to the question about school (grade and where she goes) that she is hsed. That always gets the "smile/nod", lol! :D
  6. We are current SL users and like another poster, I am a research fanatic and over-think EVERYTHING! I also know from past experience that I want something over the long haul, and not jumping around, BTDT!! My ds that graduates this year was my curriculum guinea pig. We tried everything, including two SL cores and he actually ended up doing his final three classes online. I have decided with my younger dd's to use SL as a core, then use the WTM suggested LA, math, science, electives, etc. I do feel like I have tried most of the more popular curriculums out there, so I know what I like, and what I think will be best for my dd. My dh discusses with me what curriculum we will be using, but generally leaves the final decisions to me, as I am the one doing all of the research, and the one that has tried so many different things. We both like the WTM LA and will be using most of their suggested materials as soon as dd#1 reahes 1st grade. I did find out over the years that I despise making my own lesson plans, and definitely like eveything laid out. I do feel like the WTM suggestions for the other subjects have options for curriculum that is laid out. It is great to KNOW what we are doing as a spine & to have TWTM as a guide for the rest.
  7. Is there a list someplace? I know most of them, but some I idea. I am referring to things like HWT, SL, TOG, TWTM, etc... The ones I posted (plus lost more) I can figure out, but some....no idea??!!
  8. Avatar photo is tiny pic above (like the one of dh and I) sig photo is in signature, like the one of my children in mine :D
  9. Will search lots of places online with one fell swoop. It gets ebay, half.com, amazon, abebooks...plus many more. Try it out! Tells you the cheapest price plus shipping.
  10. My ds is big for her age (just turned four in March) and people constantly ask her how old she is (and are amazed when she says four), then they ask where she goes to school. She always answers, "We do homeschool!" I am so happy every time she says that! YAY for homeschooling!! :D
  11. new to this forum, love it so far! :D
  12. Keep looking! We looked for months to find a car for our son that was around $2000. I simply was persistent. Also, don't be afraid to ask someone to come off the price. As far as good cars, yes, Volvos are awesome. They are also expensive to maintain. I would stay away from anything European (Volvo, VW, Saab, etc.) and stay in the Japanese market (Toyota, Honda). They are well-made cars that are very cheap to maintain, as long as you stay up with the maintenance. (I took several college/ASE courses in mechanics and worked for Ford in their service department for several years). Hope you find what you need, we have gotten great deals off of craigslit, just by asking for a lower price. Good luck! Michelle <><
  13. We are in Columbus, been hsing 11 years. Just found this board! :001_smile:
