Do you have a hard time putting an interesting novel down?

Much relief--recommender 2 replied to D, confirmed the upload to one school, asked for her to resend the invites for CA and the other school, and uploaded the letters within the hour. Recommender 1 emailed D that she uploaded hers to the last school. Whew! D is almost done with her final Nov 1 essay

Calculus - AP or CLEP or DE
Luckymama replied to Matryoshka's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
This is the first year for the redesigned AP Calculus exams (both of them). I haven't taken the time to see what has changed. -
Recommendations are still missing. One school says teacher 2 has submitted, but teacher 2's recs are missing from the other schools and the CA schools. Mind you, teacher 1 submitted to all schools and CA with the exception of that first school (she's emailed teacher 1 to check). D emailed teacher 2 a reminder *again*. She needs two recs for a non-CA school as a homeschooler. She's giving him until 3pm to reply. If he does not or us unable to do the rec, she'll have to call the school to see if she can switch to a different person (who is her "other" recommender). She is hyperventilating at the thought and has lost all focus to work on the single essay remaining for the Nov 1 schools/scholarships/programs.

One sister-in-law has been allergic to many foods since birth. Dh developed a hop allergy (oh, the humanity!) 5-6 years ago from over-exposure due to growing hops for homebrewing. Apparently it's common among hop growers and pickers. I think more people are aware of what allergic reactions, large and small, are.

I am so sorry to hear this news :( I had mono at the very end of spring semester my freshman year, sent home and exempted from finals (!) because I had a 4.0. I was pretty sick and was not allowed to work until mid-July. Ds had mono junior year of high school. He had finished finals and had taken the June ACT. He slept for 10 days or so, appearing periodically for food.

Dd has two acceptances now: University of Mississippi and Indiana University-Bloomington. We'll be waiting for many months to learn about acceptance to special programs (incl. Honors) and the all-important scholarships.

What cash amount would you give to DD's boyfriend for 21st?
Luckymama replied to Ginevra's topic in The Chat Board
I think $50 is fine. -
So he could start Arabic in the fall and study abroad spring semester. Are there different options for class work the following fall semester if he learns more than expected during study abroad? Some people respond very well to immersion learning. It would stink if he had only third semester Arabic as an option if he mastered that grammar and vocab ahead of schedule. Summer Arabic programs are $$$$$. The best are at UTexas-Austin and Indiana U-Bloomington. There are programs at Cal State San Bernadino and Beloit. Substitute Chinese anywhere I mentioned Arabic. Btw D added Chinese this year. She wants to continue both languages in college so we've been doing a lot (a lot!) of deep research into the "whats" and "hows" of reaching professional-level fluency via class work and study/interning abroad.

I'm finally not on mobile so I can clarify my thoughts. I think test scores, including AP, do belong on a transcript. I did not put AP scholar w distinction on dd's transcript because it's obvious she has a lot of APs with the appropriate scores (it is listed on the CA). Dd also has university DE courses on her transcript with 4.0 grades. NMSF/F belongs on the transcript. If D were in the situation like someone like 8's dd without AP and DE but with major, major accomplishments, I'd definitely be listing those on the transcript! Local homeschoolers put every award on their transcript. It makes the transcript so crowded that grades are no longer the focus. That is what I object to. Put the sports and extracurricular awards on the application or on the kid's resume. The transcript should focus on the academic.

I don't think awards/achievements belong on the transcript. Do his schools use the Common App? If not, is there an awards section on their own app? Dd is only applying to large state flagships. Two use their own apps with awards and honors sections.

What? Is that even allowed? -
AMC 10 at local school - who do I call?
Luckymama replied to mirabillis's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I'd contact the head of the math department. Don't lead with your son being homeschooled---just say he's not a student at the school but he'd like to take the AMC. -
How many high school credits did your dc graduate with?
Luckymama replied to Sharon77's topic in The College Board
^^ Just use something like IP for in-progress classes and PL for planned second semester classes (if different) either where you'd put the credit value or the grade. When you send the final transcript you'll replace those designations w the credit/grade. -

Luckymama replied to Sharon77's topic in The College Board
D will graduate with 31: 10 language (mostly DE), 6 social science, 2 history, 5 math (including 2 .5 credit AoPS), 4 English, 4 science. -
I make a tex-mex meatball (w corn, sweet pepper, black beans, onion) and use the tortilla chip crumblies and egg as binder.

9: US History (K12's book Anerican Odyssey) 10: Ancient World History AP Human Geography 11: AP Comparative Government and Politics 12: AP US Government and Politics (She also has AP Psych, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Microeconomics. Her transcript is skewed toward social sciences and Arabic + Chinese. I teach/facilitate all but the languages.)
