The extra conversation section was run similarly to the regular class meeting, except the students would pair up at the end of class in separate chat rooms (through the class platform) to practice what they did with the teacher. Iirc that section was an additional $100 fee, but well worth it. I don't know if such a section is offered for all the languages.
  2. Dd took her first year course through TPS. She had one class session and one extra conversation section per week (3 hours total). She spent two hours a week, at most, outside of class.

  5. We're doing AP US Gov this year after a very successful AP Comp Gov last year. Our sources: --How Our Government Really Works Despite What They Say (Daniel Rubin, 4th ed) --the REA Crash Course book referenced above --Crash Course Government videos --the 'More Perfect' podcast about Supreme Court cases --Constitution USA series of 3 hourlong episodes --"538 Fridays" in which we read the election posts on the 538 blog and other polling/demographic data about this year's races --some other bits and pieces We read and discuss all kinds of primary sources---Articles of Confederation, Constituition, Bill of Rights, amendments, various acts of Congress, Supreme Court cases, etc. Dd noticed something yesterday in the news that runs counter to two amendments. A very good discussion ensued with us reciting parts of the Constitution back-and-forth :D I belong to an AP Government teacher group on Facebook which has been an awesome resource.
  6. We also have the Gusto bowls which we use for thick soups, chilis, and stews. I also like them as serving dishes for veggies and such, especially during buffets or large gatherings. because they have a more narrow footprint than a same-volume traditionally-shaped serving bowl,

  8. I have lived all over the country. Grading scales vary between the A=93/94-100 and A=90-100 (etc). It doesn't really matter. Just pick one and stick with it. I am not using +/- either.
  9. Both weighted and unweighted GPAs are listed on dd's transcript. Like Sebastian, I have a short blurb on the transcript and a longer explanation in the school profile. I included the weighted GPA because some of dd's schools explicitly state that weighted GPA is used in their merit aid decisions. Dd is applying to very large state flagships schools around the country because they are the only schools that fit her unusual language needs. Perhaps if she were applying to small LACs only I might do differently.
  10. Dh and I are going to WDW in 36 days :party: sans children :party: for Food & Wine and our 25th anniversary :party: We've been making plans to go during F&W with friends as soon as our youngest kids are in college :D (Dh and I have been three times during F&W do far.)
  11. The basic beginner (alphabet) textbook is Alif Baa, followed by al Kitaab, part one. I'd link to Amazon but I'm on mobile right now. D started with an online course thru TPS (not secular but she dealt w it just to have a class), continued at Concordia Language Villages four week session (scholarships!), and moved to dual enrollment at a university. Dd wanted a narive speaker as her teacher which is why I have no self-paced options for share. I have found plenty of online learn Arabic materials but most are decidedly not secular.

(Awkward title) For those of you who decided to graduate a student early while the student was already in high school (not deciding in 7th or 8th grade, for example), how did you handle that on college applications: Did you bring forward all or some of the (formerly) 8th grade classes to become 9th grade classes, bumping everything else a year? Did you show only 3 years of high school but listed the other high-school-level classes as taken during 8th? Did you address the early graduation in your counselor recommendation? If so, how? And how on earth did you list years for extracurriculars (9, 10, 11, 12) if your student only had 3 years of high school? Background: Dd is going to graduate a year early because she is ready on so many levels. Her transcript is written by subject. She has many credits from this and the previous two years (10 foreign language, 7 history/social science, 4 math, 4 science, 3 English). She really only "needs" the English class taken in 8th grade (a 9th grade class from an onine provider) moved up from 8th grade, though I could move all the other classes Including multiple math credits. All but 2 of her foreign language credits are from state flagship university DE. She has AP scores to back up math, English, science, and social science grades. Thanks!
  14. That's what I did. It just made more sense to me that way. None of the schools (or special scholarships) dd is applying to have asked for a separate reading list.
  15. Hey all :D Dd's university class schedule has messed with my routine :( Last year I was able to drop her on campus for her DE language class and hit the gym for training sessions or cardio. Class times this year do not work for training sessions :( I've been getting up early to hit the gym with dh. It's fine as long as he doesn't talk to me :lol: I've been doing three days a week of heavy weights plus HIIT, two days of body weight in between (one is a weekly class), and a long hike with dh on a weekend day. I'm loosely following training plans in NROL Supercharged; next Tuesday I'm attending a seminar on writing your own programs at the gym. My latest PR: 40 lb squat/overhead press combinations :party: I had been stuck at 30 lb for two months!

  17. This is our last year homeschooling. I miss the excitement of the younger years. D is studying AP macro and micro and AP US government with me this year. Good test scores will get earn her credit for her major at all the schools she's applying to and will enable her to take higher-level courses right away. We're also doing a fun, interest-led astronomy course together. She's been doing astronomy events at Science Olympiad competitions every year, so we're building on the knowledge base and adding telescope work and computer-based labs, similar to what is covered in an intro undergrad course. English is outsourced to Blue Tent Online again. She scored well on the AP Lang test so is taking the post-AP option. Chinese has been added to her language study at the university. She's working w a tutor for Arabic as there isn't an appropriate level of Arabic being offered this semester. So many application essays remain to be written. Dd's first deadline is Oct 7 (true deadline is Oct 14) for a long shot uber competitive full ride scholarship.
  18. Also by subject according to transcript and then by order in which taken. The transcript subjects are ordered according to dd's strengths and interests, with foreign languages first and social sciences second.
  19. No :) Schools that do not need FAFSA info for acceptance don't care. Need-aware schools (google for a list) do and will hold acceptance decisions for FAFSA data. Decisions about aid do rely on the FAFSA (and the CSS Profile for private schools). That information will either arrive after, sometimes way after, acceptance or will arrive with the acceptance decision but not until later in the spring.
  20. Lisa, I alternate MWF heavy weights with TTh body weight only. I take one weekend day off and dh and I hike on the other day. I'm on my phone otherwise I'd elaborate. Back in the am :)
