  1. Have looked at this site: http://www.physics4kids.com ? It's not a book but so simple and well laid out.
  2. I agree. Why fix what isn't broken? Think of the hours scheduling you'll save to do other things. That said, I schedule for three reasons: I need to see the big picture written out, I tend to forget things, and my eldest starts reverting to her natural state of misery guts if she can't see a clear path for the day. :)
  3. Everybody Loves Raymond. I've never understood why that show and Two and a Half Men are (were) such huge hits.
  4. I'm sure it's been said, Star Trek, they have the holodeck. I wrote (sounds less pathetic than fantasized) an episode where I met Guinan at a bar on some planet, got join join the Enterprise crew as her assistant and Event Coordinator, planned a themed birthday for Picard on the holodeck (his chateau in France) with Will Riker and hmmmm.... I'll stop there. ;)
  5. I had a Roomba and miss it. The trick with the Roomba, at least the one we had, was for it to work I had to do a quick pick up of the downstairs every night including putting up dining chairs. So every morning not only was my floor clean but my house was tidy. :)
  6. If you look up Pecos Bill or Paul Bunyan on Amazon there are a bunch of great picture books of other tall tale legends like Mike Fink, Slue Foot Sue, etc. Mary Osborne has a anthology book as well. I wouldn't have thought of Annie Oakley as a tall tale character. She, Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone, Buffalo Bill, Johnny Appleseed, and the Swamp Fox would fall into legend, right? Anyhow, I loved tall tales and mythology as a kid. We've been working on myths in our house but I plan to introduce my kids to more tall tales this summer to jive with our American History. I'm looking forward to reading what other characters the Hive lists. Oh and I grew up in SoCal and learned about Tall Tales in Elementary School.
  7. There's one with flaming bagpipes too. I guess you can find anything on youtube! Thanks for the grin!
  8. Mrs. Lynch, my 4th grade teacher was the dreaded gorgon of my elementry school years. I worried from the moment I found out I was in her class, all summer until that first day. She chucked the district text books and used her old favorites. She never yelled or threw a tantrum. She knew how to run a tight ship with out such low brow tactics. I adored her by the end of the year.
  9. Did I miss something? Is Kindergarten mandatory in your state?
  10. I signed up. It's free and no cc required. I ran into a problem with the school year. It won't let me select 2015 from the list for year end date (there is only 2014 to choose from). Then it wants a school period and you have a choice of 1, 2, 3, or 4. I chose 3 for three terms (as the little help button explained) but later it said the whole year was one term. I didn't get very far. It's quite pretty. I wonder if I can post a screen shot... ETA I went back in to take a screen shot of the missing 2015 and the year long third term but the edit interface is set up much nicer than the initial set up screen. It makes much more sense and has the calendar for 2015. :)
  11. There are some subjects that I am just done with, and by done I mean I don't want to think about them anymore, not finished planning.
  12. That was so cute! I miss all the fun commercials since we don't have cable TV or a dish.
  13. When we lived in VA we chose BJ's over Costco and Sams. It was less crowded, membership was cheaper, prices were lower and the selection was great. It took a long time before I joined a Costco in CA. The crowds just make me want to run. If you're military BJ's offers a discount on membership and Costco has a coupon package.
  14. So in the fall we'll do Bible Subjects (daily), History (4x), Shakespeare (1x), Plutarch (1x), Art (1x), Music History (1x), and some Literature (daily) as a group. I have it scheduled that the 5th grader will do a Math and Language Arts daily and Latin and more History stuff 4x a week. However, I intend to give her a schedule for the week and let her decide how to work through her daily folders on her own. We're not doing a formal science program so I want her to have time to research topics of interest as they come up and we'll work on projects from there. I have no idea if this will be successful or a complete fail. So ask me in November how it's going. :)
  15. Thanks Cheryl! I wouldn't have even thought about where the seeds come from.
  16. Thanks for this tip! When you said have extra gravel, soil, etc on hand did you mean if a plant fails I have to replace all of that before trying a new plant in the pot?
  17. We're coastal. When you say fall crops, are you harvesting them in the fall?
  18. A calendar of what to plant when sounds like a great idea. I'll check the library. Thanks
  19. Hailstones and Halibut Bones Dark Emperor beast feast Eric Carle's Animals Animals For Laughing Out Loud Science Verses The Seashell Anthology Childcraft's book of Poems and Nursery Rhymes (there are probably better illustrated books but I like the international mix of children's poetry)
  20. One thing I've noticed with my eldest (7) was that she started reading cereal boxes or ads and commenting on them. A PP mentioned graphic novels. That helped here too. Jbug found a copy of Butt Naked Baby Blues and carried it around with her everywhere, working her way through the book (before she tried reading any other book on her own for pleasure). I was amazed at how she took to it and related our family with the book's family. This summer we started with 5 minutes of silent reading and increased it by two minutes each week. That may work for your kids too.
