  1. They participate in couch gymnastics followed by a little bit of up to no good. ;)
  2. Following. I remember when this first popped up and then totally forgot about it. :)
  3. Ok. I still haven't had coffee yet but I do understand where the whole questioning of their homeschool came from. I don't understand how Mendoza filled out the truancy form. What gives her the right? Did you see in the footnotes that an affidavit was filed stating they used Abeka was filed 2 years later? ETA: is the suit filing for declaratory and injunctive relief and damages the McIntyres suing the district??
  4. In TX homeschoolers are unaccredited private schools? Is it described somewhere as a private school? I thought in TX there were no regulations on homeschooling. Are there no regulations on private schools too? I'm sure someone can point out the errors in my thinking, so I'm letting you know this is written pre-coffee.
  5. The fat would be rendered from the chicken when roasted. I did include celery and a bag of mixed veg. Which could include anything really. We have brocoli, carrots and cauliflower raw or a Normandy blend which includes squash. It was just a meal idea. People live without fruit, green veg, fat or seasonings. I was trying to be helpful and encouraging. I guess I don't get the questioning.
  6. Well since your college aged daughter will be home can you give her what you would use if you were home? Since it's 1st grade LA we're talking about a max of 15-20 min?
  7. I've never seen the falls before, except in an old classic movie. That's quite lovely. Have a great trip!
  8. The older recipe idea is a really good one. I was looking at a site that posted menus from past decades and often, because there was no refrigeration they ate the same meat all day or pork for dinner and breakfast the next morning.
  9. Let's see... Two bags of beans, two onions, a bag of rice, a whole chicken, a bag of veg, a bunch of celery and carrots. That should be way less than $24... maybe $18? and could feed a family of 6 all day, I think...add in a dozen eggs and I think you could get 2 days... I'm thinking huge pot of chicken, bean and veg soup, then giblets veg and rice, next vegetable fried rice and last eggs and beans and whatever veg is leftover. I just don't know if I'm picture enough food. We're a family of 6 and my kids are little. So I definitely think you can do it I just may be off on stretching it further.
  10. So I tried the flash got all but haven't a clue what I'm looking at. So far it's just all the pictures and widgets on the site. I can't find the text.
  11. The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens The Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean We have lots of Christmas Treasuries with short stories, letters and excerpts. I'm a picture book lover so An Orange for Frankie by Patricia Polacco Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree by Robert Barry The Glorious Impossible by Madeline L'Engle
  12. I used a set from Oriental Trading Company. It was a set of posters for the systems of the body.
  13. Niiice. They don't make them like they used to.
  14. Thank you Kathie and SilverMoon. I was going to use only a page of text for the model. You reminded me that the authors do stress that if the narrative was coming from a larger piece it needed to have a almost a story within the story feel- a completeness. I forgot that the student isn't just imitating good writing but a complete plot- beginning-end and I don't know if I could pull that out from each chapter. Back to the drawing board. Did you use Aesop for two years? Did you mix it with anything else?
  15. Re: Self education Have you googled socratic discussion or seminar? I think between reading up on that, familiarizing yourself with some literary terms, and expanding the breadth of your's and your children's exposure to great literature (I'm thinking of the lewelma thread and the Reader's Odyssey here) you'll be golden for literature analysis when they're ready. This is being humbly written by one who is taking these steps in hopes of being prepared when that day comes too. :)
  16. You could get all Victorian: Meeting of the Morning Minds Society- in which we elevate and order our souls and minds through the reading of the holy scriptures, recitation of the daily calendar, and enjoy fine poetry and prose over a warm beverage. ;) Or Star Treky: Morning Mind Meld- Boldly going where no minds should go before coffee. ;)
  17. I plan on doing Aesop, year 1 at least, without the workbook and just pull models from our 3rd grade lit list. In Chapter 2, Gustilo and Jaqua repeatedly give examples of myths, legends, fairy tales and fables as models to be used for analysis and imitation. Is there a reason why I couldn't use Charlotte's Web instead? I thought a short section from each chapter could serve as a model. Is there something my daughter will miss out on if I opt for this model instead of myths, legends, fables, or fairy tales?
  18. How do you use these with your Logic Stage student? I was planning on using this site: http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/documents/before-1600/charter-to-sir-walter-raleigh-march-25-1584.php to print them out and include them in the 5th grader's assigned reading for the week and then discuss them on Friday. I've only planned out the first 6 weeks in detail and thought to include The Charter to Sir Walter Raleigh, Letter to John Cabot, Letter to Amerigo Vespucci and the Iroquois Constitution (excerpts). I just saw the points of ellipsis all over the docs and realized they're probably quite edited. So what do you do? Am I going about this right?
  19. We pull vocab words out of whatever we're reading. So far it's been informal but this year we start CW Aesop and it's part of the weekly tasks. I want to start doing a word of the day or week. We bought Marie's Words to do that with but then I found these flashcards at our local nature center for free (they were remodeling and giving away stuff from the gift shop) http://www.insidestoryflashcards.com and plan to use them instead. ETA I just saw they have free printable flashcards too. Nice! We have the animal set btw.
  20. That's a cute idea. Both the pocket folders and the duct tape. I was thinking of using laminated pages for covers. I have an ARC though.
  21. Hunter, I love the half day idea, especially for December.
  22. Good Morning! Workout done! To do: Kid's laundry Wash floor Visit the library-Done! Continue prereading-Done for the day! Budget-Done! Dinner Kids dentist appts VBS Happy Monday!
  23. That amazes me. It's a little worrying the one of the biggest chains for printing can't handle printing double sided. Staples is my go to store. Maybe I need to find and Office Depot....or visit the base library and get five pages printed at a time for free. ;)
