Those of you who converted from Protestant to Catholic
jaderbee replied to freeindeed's topic in The Chat Board
I'm coming to this late but wanted to share that a Catholic friend of mine shared Home Sweet Rome with me and I saw how much we Protestants lost, how much Catholics who don't really understand their faith are missing out on by not taking the time to really read and understand the meanings behind the church's traditions. -
My geography curriculum is finished!
jaderbee replied to jenn&charles's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
That is amazing. I love your style. What new book? And with the geography, did it take the place of history the year you taught it? -
What about pedicures? When we lived out in 29 Palms a friend had a gal come and give pedicures in her home for her birthday party. It was lots of fun. Oh and we all paid for our own pedicures. Are there any manicurists in your area that want to earn a few extra bucks?

I don't think that's a YEC phenomenon. The idea that you can select your reality seems to be prevalent in our culture. You can give someone facts and they will just write it off as something that's ok for you but not for them (instead of debating the meaning or cause of the facts). Now, I'm just a mom not a scholar but it seems like we have generations of people who lack the ability to know truth and argue (traditional meaning here not yelling) for it or about it. I do think some of this has stemmed from raising kids in a church culture that emphasizes feeling and emotions over facts but church going families are in the minority now so that can't be the only cause.

My eldest loved Magic Tree House and the Ramona series. Though very fun I really don't know if I would go that route again. They have helped her build confidence in reading but outside of that and entertainment I don't think those two series really serve a higher purpose. Other favorites have been All of a Kind Family, Our Island Story, The Railway Children, Blue Fairy Book, Robin Hood, Oscar Wilde Fairy Tales, King Arthur, and there's more but that's all I'm recalling at the moment. I like the Shakespeare series, the Great Courses on eras of History and Opera, Zig Ziglar stuff, Pimsleur Spanish, Dune (this was awesome!) LOTR and The Hobbit.

Who has studied the 50 states?
jaderbee replied to jaderbee's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Kerileanne99's post has really stuck with me. It adds a purpose beyond trivia to studying the states. I'm going to see if I can find the book about how the states were shaped and see what pegs of info jive with our history study. I'm not stopping there. Cooking, games, songs, and the websites sound like fun enrichment. Thanks again everyone. -
Who has studied the 50 states?

I think your response could have fallen under "yes it was worthwhile" or whatever the option was and then elaborated, as you have done, that Stack the States worked the best. I appreciate the feedback. -
Making broth is easy. Pre roasting bones and veg can add flavor. I just toss everything (carcass, carrots, onions, celery, bay leaf) in our crockpot, fill with water and cook on low for.....whenever I remember to turn it off. ;) oh and we use the bits of veg that don't get used throughout the week ( celery tops, onion tops, leftover carrots, etc) just toss them in the freezer until needed). Usually we do it over night and I don't get around to it until after the kitchen is cleaned from breakfast so 12+ hours. Then I let it cool a little and dump it into a sink sized strainer with a giant bowl underneath. From there we either store it in 2 cup containers, ziploc bags, or a giant Tupperware. We use broth a lot when we cook so it usually goes in the fridge and is gone within a week. I just read through wellness mama's description and I kind of laughed. Who knew we'd been on the band wagon all these years. ;) Anyhow, happy bone broth brewing!

The Thrifty Couple has a huge list of ways to increase income. One I hadn't thought of before was writing thank you notes as a service. -
