  1. My DH is pretty good about making dinner a few nights in a row but would have problems figuring out a whole month, for sure! :grouphug: Our go-to dish for when we're very lazy: Automatically add to any shopping list sausages, jar of pasta sauce, and carrots. These all keep really well. Sausages can be frozen and if you forget to defrost just throw them in whole and cut after they're hot if you need to. Slice up a pack of pre-cooked sausages and add to skillet. (We use 5 GF chicken links equal to 1 lb, and slice them all together to save time.) Dump a jar of tomato-based pasta sauce over sausages Cut carrot sticks and set table while waiting for sausages and sauce to heat 2 veggies and a protein, gluten and dairy free, in less than 10 minutes. If we have more time we saute onions and mushrooms too, or add celery or diced carrots. It's like a pasta sauce w/o the pasta, with extra veggies if you want. Add cheese on top if you can have dairy. You can also brown ground beef or turkey but it takes longer.
  2. I have a science degree and worked on the editorial for Campbell 3e and 4e and was also on the team for Concepts and Connections in the early days. I also used Campbell in university. Concepts and Connections (one concept per 2-page spread, at least back then) is intended for the high school AP or the community college audience. Biology is intended for college level intro biology but it could be used for high school for someone who is interested enough and wants to get ahead. Using and understanding it in high school will definitely make college easier in terms of workload and the level of density of information. I agree with not testing out.
  3. From DH: A man walks into a butcher shop and says I'll bet you $1000 you can't reach the meat on the top shelf of the walk-in cooler." The butcher replies, "I won't take that bet. The steaks are too high."
  4. "Doctor, these smart pills you prescribed for me last week are Tic Tacs!" "See, you're getting smarter already."
  5. You absolutely did the right thing. You may have saved a life! Added bonus: teenager is aware that others are watching his behavior and reporting back to his father, who takes input seriously.
  6. Islam teaches that many messengers (including Jesus, John the Baptist, Abraham, Adam, etc) have been sent to humanity with appropriate messages for those people at that time. This is what I believe and it gives me peace.
  7. I'm even more of a meanie because I would write a note to the teacher requesting a zero if I thought she wouldn't do it. Make sure to confirm receipt with teacher.
  8. I would feel a moral obligation to tell the parents, both for the safety of this young man who's in his "immortal teenager" phase and for others on the road. If it were my kid I'd want to know for sure, even if it hurt or was embarrassing.
  9. We had an autistic girl go missing in our area recently and it was all over the news. The police took it very seriously. I wish that were the case for this girl as well. :crying:
  10. We made our from Lego. Do you have any? In particular a part which will allow it to pivot?
  11. Right now we pay half of our premium and DH's employer pays the other half. If I look at the full premium (both halves) and I compare it to the calculator posted earlier, our total premium will drop by around $600/month. Although Kaiser Permanente has its drawbacks, one of the main benefits is that they both are the insurance company and the medical provider. The have their own clinics, offices, hospitals, etc. That means that when you buy KP insurance, all of your doctors take your insurance. I wonder if this model should be expanded as a way to mitigate paying for insurance that doctors don't accept.
  12. I thought it was just me. Not that I've been watching Burn Notice late at night or anything....
  13. As many Great Courses as I wanted. :drool5:
  14. I did a planned cave and ate everything (no gluten in our meal). But I only had a few bites of each thing, so one plate altogether, most of which was turkey and wild rice. But also a few bites of cheesecake, a GF brownie, and sparkling cider.
  15. Well it wasn't really shocking because they are so young, but when the space shuttle was retired my son said it wasn't a problem to get to the International Space Station because we were just going to ride with the Russians, no problem. He was completely missing any knowledge about the space race, despite having watched numerous documentaries about NASA and Apollo. We'll get there in next year's history....
  16. Off to print anything regentrude ever posted... :tongue_smilie:
  17. We file the affidavit. It would be nice to have the money but I prefer more freedom for our family and we take pride in being a "private school." Everyone I personally know who did the charter school in our area has changed back to affidavits. I think a lot of it has to do with your financial situation. We have 2 kids and can afford to homeschool them w/o the state money. But if someone has say 5 kids, if you enroll one and are having someone come over and check progress anyway, it's probably worth it to do them all and get the money.
  18. I just bought some of that overpriced Boy Scout popcorn. I hope it's tasty...
  19. Awesome. It's good to hear something like this in the middle of so many sad economic and career stories these days.
  20. My DS started making scrambled eggs when he was 7. I think my 4 yo could make a messy PB&J if I asked her.
