  1. When I've made financial mistakes I try to remember I was lucky enough to have the money in the first place. :grouphug:
  2. So far I like what I've seen in the materials but the planner in me is going to have to come to terms with the above, I guess.
  3. Thanks everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one who looked at the lessons and decided we couldn't to it in one go. We're going to aim for one lesson per week and get ahead sometimes and behind others. :)
  4. Ramadan kareem! Thank you sister! I'll take a look later tonight.
  5. I'm just unwrapping AAS Level 1 and am wondering if we should do a lesson once a week, twice, thrice, maybe everyday? The lessons look pretty meaty in terms of new info to digest. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  6. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll check them out this weekend!
  7. My 8 yo has become interested in the US Supreme Court. I've been able to help him with the idea and the ins and outs, but he's also interested in important cases. It's probably impossible to find elementary-level books covering historical Supreme Court cases, but I'd love it of someone had a recommendation. I'd be willing to bring it down to his level from maybe a jr. high level. And if there's something you'd recommend at the high school level, my husband and I can perhaps go through it ourselves for discussion. It seems reading through these decisions is useful in myriad ways, from the writing, to the logic and the history. They seem like a wonderful resource, if they can be supplemented with information for non-lawyers.
  8. :grouphug: I'm sorry. I can't even imagine.
  9. Most of my family still lives in a place that has: --No A/C except for the very rich --Temps above 95 during most summer days, can reach into the 120s --Lows in the 80s or 90s --Humidity of at least 80% --Power outages of 4-8 hours/day, usually during the hottest time, due to corruption and lack of infrastructure --People who wear long sleeves and pants and sometimes hijabs or even full burkas, often all black(!) Mostly, they hate the heat (not an overstatement). People often sleep outside in courtyards in their homes or even in front of their houses. Children play in dirty water to keep cool. They run the fans when they can and wait for winter, when they're freezing because it's 60 degrees! (That's when I visit.) They eat a lot of spicy food (makes them sweat), lots of cold yogurt, lots of fruit. Wealthier people (but not rich enough for A/C) go to the mountains in the summer. Basically, they suck it up.
  10. I also have an aversion to food. I've mitigated most of it using homeopathy and tapping (http://www.tapping.com/). I do better with cold foods and what I call "delicacies." So small amounts of something pleasing (aesthetically and in flavor) rather than large amounts of overwhelming food. If you're the same, maybe chicken salad or tuna salad, smoked salmon, etc? I eat more when I am outside, like at a park or after a hike or at the beach. I also eat more if I exercise, especially outside. I eat more the next day if I don't eat after dark. This books also helped: http://www.eatfatlosefat.com/
  11. Not Rebel Yell, but I think the two dinosaurs are watching the ark depart and one of them says, "Oh, was that today?" I could be wrong though; it's a bit blurry.
  12. Do you think you would do better with fish/shellfish than land animals? Does something like a tuna fish sandwich sound easier than a slab of steak? Do you actually feel physical revulsion to fats/meats or id it a mental thing where you've trained yourself that fats are bad?
  13. sports: what is the point? It's the thing they give you after you score.
  14. Let's see... If you don't want to eat more often or larger quantities, I would say you need to approach your meals with the idea of making each bite more calorie- and nutrient-dense. Easy ways to do this include: --More fat in the meal. If you don't want dairy try adding coconut oil, or drizzling olive oil on everything savory. --Try adding small amounts of organ meats to things where you won't taste them. Bonus: organ meats sre usually cheaper. --Eat more eggs. They are quick to prepare. --Smoothies. When I lost my appetite during pregnancy I made a smoothie with raw milk (maybe use almond milk?), raw eggs, bananas, and honey. I just kept the blender jar in the fridge and drank it all day, putting it back onto the blender and giving it a whirl if it separated. Add the protein powders you've stockpiled. --Nuts are easy and nutritious, although they can be expensive. --If you eat grains add fat to them. Ghee, coconut oil, butter.
  15. Stick to less than 1/4 cup of nuts/day. For fruit, eat only berries. Ditch bananas, oranges, etc. :grouphug:
  16. As a Muslim who is also keeping young kids home to instill religious values, I would not send my kids to middle school. It's a time of raging hormones, lack of social thinking, and experimentation. Personally, and this was almost 30 years ago, I was exposed to many many un-Islamic things in what was then "jr. high." And this was at a good school in a nice town. I was not homeschooled but looking back I would have been much better off in my deen if my parents had kept me home. Same with my sibling. It took me a long time to recover from that and my naive parents had no idea what was going on. They believed it was a lot more moral than it was. Salams. :grouphug:
  17. I'm praying for you and am in awe of your strength. :grouphug:
  18. The pictures of the fire coming down the mountain are chilling. :grouphug:
  19. The Swiss Family Robinson have become like members of our own family, they've been here so long.
