  1. I used to work in a cubicle near a woman who volunteered for a dog rescue. It seemed to cross a line when she would ask the applicant's vet if they paid their bills on time. Ick, didn't see why that is their business.
  2. I have been loving Miquon with my now 6 yo. It is normally for k-2? Or 1-3? In any case, I feel little pressure to rush her, but she has been steadily moving along and is a whiz at mental math now.
  3. Our area has a local astronomy association. They hold public viewings a few times a year where they set up their telescopes and answer the same newbie questions for a few hours. Perhaps you could find something similar. H. A. Rey, of Curious George fame, has a nice book for identifying constellations. Also Usborne has a set of cards about astronomy. I highly recommend the website/app Heavens Above. We often use it to know where to look to see satellites passing over. There is a lunar eclipse coming up this Sunday night.
  4. You could experiment with floor tortillas. Thin but floppy.
  5. We can't do Math Kangaroo this year because I think we will be travelling, so my dc were willing to do a Latin Exam, but the only one I knew of was the National Latin Exam, can you compare it to ELE? Which one is better, or more accommodating for homeschoolers? I'll have to do some googling layer, but it would be great to hear your thoughts.
  6. My usual approach is to just whine and complain about them. My family loves me. My worst symptom can be itchy eyes. For that, I have some plain, unmedicated eye drops that help flush out the allergens. Didn't see that mentioned.
  7. Wow, smokin' response! I'm always caught flat-footed in the face of such blatant idiocy and rudeness.
  8. Penderwicks? I couldn't read them, but it is all about a family. Not much else, in my opinion! Haha.
  9. The only reason I see for not starting slow and steady with GSWL would be if you want your dd to get to a certain level before the end of high school. For instance, to take the AP test in 10th you might want to dive right in to a longer ranging curriculum. Our experience was that a nice year spent with GSWL and additional English-to-Latin exercises really out us in good shape to start Lively Latin.
  10. Neutrogena has one that I really like, "revitalizing lip balm" I use Fresh Plum which looks dark, but just tints nicely. No shimmer, subtle smell, virtually no taste.
  11. I like to buy houses from people like you and Orthodox's ds. People who have the vision and drive and time (or perhaps priorities) to do the work needed, and do it well. I used to think that was me, but now, years later and with experience under my belt, I know it is not me. I love the look of 50's modern houses, though.
  12. Dance Mat didn't have a wpm, but keep the volume down or you will get your fill of "Type on me!" I have heard that it sometimes gets hung up now that it is no longer hosted by BBC? You may want to try a level yourself first to see how it goes.
  13. Well, your post sounds like you are not interested in Salsa, which is a common recommendation for that age. One of my libraries had Muzzy online and it included some basic games associated with the different lessons. The three of you might like the BBC's Mi Vida Loca. It is episodes of a show that you participate in and then there a few grammar and vocabulary exercises, some of which include listening to dialog. We like it here, but I can't review the end since we haven't gotten there yet... We get Spanish story books from the library occasionally and read those. Low tech. Another thing you might like is the Spanish package at Tinman Press. There are four different types of activities that use some (occasionally new) vocabulary, and often require the kids to listen to your oral directions. It is a nice supplement. I got the whole thing and usually we would do one sheet from two different packets at a sitting. I think I found two sheets that needed errata, and the company quickly sent me one (maybe both?) I'm happy to pass them on if you go with that. If you speak Spanish, you would be well equipped to check out the Zambombazo website. I can muddle through and find cool stuff, although much of it is meant to be printed out. None of this is exactly what you asked for, though. I'll keep thinking about it.
  14. Technically, we haven't gotten through middle school or into high school yet, so I voted with my plan. Plans are so nice and clear-cut.
  15. I would ask if they have thought about getting sports glasses for their daughter! As she can assess at this age kids can easily break them during soccer, and yikes! The glasses are expensive, but flexible enough to last many years and save her vision! We have some, and I remember watching a little girl without them get hit in the face. Agh, queasy-making. I am amazed they have to wear shin guards do religiously, but glasses aren't commented on. Anyway, I would just look at her blankly.
  16. I'm no writing expert, but WWE1 is not what you want, maybe WWE3. It would practice, writing from dictation, summary and narration, and getting those summaries from your head to the paper. WWE 4 is the same, but a step up in length of passages, and with slightly less scaffolding. I wouldn't start with 4, although I might modify 3 to be more like 4 if she caught on quickly. It isn't clear to me where you think she struggles, exactly, and I am not familiar with SWI. Can you help her break down the tasks into manageable sizes and then work with her through them? Good luck finding what you all need.
  17. I think she is being rude. Sure, I'm not on Facebook and I had some wine with dinner, but still. In any case I'm sorry you are sad and I think you did the right thing giving her an out.
  18. Aww, I loved Whose Mouse are You? My mother's mouse, I love her so. Off to check the library holdings...
  19. Check out the Math Kangaroo site. My kids call it "puzzle math" I think you can look at least year's test for free, but back years are cheap, too.
  20. What is sauce, a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes, 2T olive oil, and some garlic, simmer until you need it, freeze the remainder in pizza-sized portions and save yourself the agony of sauce making for a while. Capice? DH says Papa Murphy's.
  21. Thanks for the picture! Let me know when you do a Midwest shindig.
  22. I bet those people ALWAYS bought from the meat guys that have the freezer in the back of their pickup truck. Except I know you didn't live in the US, so maybe not. Too bad, though. What size laser pointer do you think the owners have to keep a cat that big happy?
