  1. It sounds like a neat idea. It won't work for us, but I wanted to send you some vibes of encouragement anyway!
  2. At my kids ages the equivalent would be something like: "Nancy, we are looking forward to our family get-together this afternoon! Have you thought about all the things you need to get done before we sit down for a cup of tea? What is your plan for getting the laundry moved along, cleaning off the kitchen counter, and finally taking that pile of outgrown clothes to Goodwill? You don't have to tell ME your plan, so long as you have one, okay? Well, tell new what you are going to do first, at least."
  3. It is pretty subtle, but keep in mind that WWE does progress to where students are doing their own scribing of narrations and paragraph-long dictation (in theory, not exactly in practice in our house). So if you want to replicate WWE on your own, and there is nothing wrong with that, you may want similar long term goals. Or not. Additionally, I think a lot of people rewrite the copywork to whatever properties or font works for them, so you wouldn't be alone there.
  4. I don't think he is doing the smart thing. Is there a procedure for giving "incomplete"? He could do some of the work this semester and then fill in the holes next semester?
  5. I've wondered this too. I'm thinking our level of sugar consumption, or HFCS specifically. Perhaps it will be all the accidents from people driving their own cars.
  6. Secular? Hard to find. You could go more of the mathy route and try problems from Math Kangaroo. They aren't arithmetic, mostly require a logical approach. You can look at a free set (last year's test, I think) on the Canadian Math Kangaroo site. A less mathy approach might be to try a philosophy for kids approach. I did a deep search for logic options last spring for my current 10 yos without finding the perfect thing. I feel for her. Once you understand how the grid problems work and that there is always a unique solution, the novelty is gone. Same for sudoku. Although after sudoku you could show her ken-ken which has an arithmetic and combinatorics spin. You could also look at logic games in general, there have been a few threads on that. If you want religious content there is a book that I can't remember now. Is it Art of Argument?
  7. I cut up a bunch of old t-shirts to use in place of paper towels most of the time. My other idea is to plan it all out. Plan out meals and snacks. At least then you can see where it is a struggle to stock to the plan. If your downfall is the late afternoon snack you can add more of those into your plan, or more filling one's, or soldier one's, or just allocate grocery money for 2 for 1 bags of chips, or whatever works for you.
  8. That would irk me mightily. However, trying to avoid the situation in the future, in a town filled with family and extended family may make for some very uncomfortable, long-term situations. Honestly, it might be less hassle to just move. Barring that, I would try to share less and respond with a comment about how the topic is not something I'm comfortable discussing. Not an ideal response, I realize. Good luck how ever you decide to handle it.
  9. I think so too. I've booked a few times with vrbo and not had an issue, but I've also seen the same properties listed on other sites. I guess my take away will be to email a few sites at once, when I start planning our spring trip!
  10. I agree with Fifiruth. Think of this as your "starter machine" it will always be handy, even after you have outgrown it. You might see if your library has Consumer Reports, this seems right up their alley.
  11. She did a good, good thing by apologizing. I imagine the boy kept crying because it hurt (and perhaps he was embarrassed). I actually think that despite my instinct to try top "make it right", she shouldn't do anything more. If that is too hard, I might put together a get-well card from the entire team. Injury is one of the risks we all accept when we sign the forms with the small print.
  12. Taking a break would be a crisis in our house. My son is still struggling with the shift we made this year moving library day from Tuesday to Thursday. It has been 6 weeks. In fairness, though, the situation is not the same as or library does not have fines. Books from the "fine library" stay quarantined and are returned immediately upon completion. Along with many strident reminders on my part.
  13. Hitting a wall with parabolas - need advice Stand father back.
  14. I in no way begrudge her charging a fee, but I will say that last spring when I wanted to print some lined paper her website was smart enough to make me turn off ad blocker first. Some kind of internet magic.
  15. For the first book I summarize the important things we talked about and then dc draws a picture on the top half of the page. For books 2 and 3 I made up some worksheets of my own to record each lesson. In book 2 they still requested to room to draw a picture, in book 3 we've moved away from that a bit. They have them all in one binder and it is great for going back to review precedent lessons.
  16. I can't answer any of your questions directly, but in the freewheeling spirit of internet chat board I'm going to respond anyway! I rehydrate a whole bag of dry beans at a time (usually 1lb bags), then I let them cool and put about a can's worth into pint size freeze bags. They thaw pretty quickly when I forget to get them out of the freezer early in the day. Canning is a great idea, though! Good luck!
  17. I would involve ds in the decision, maybe phrase it, would you like to continue in the co-op alternating weeks, or switch over to the church one full-time? Whatever two options you can live with. While he is in co-op, I agree with the diversions to make that school or craft time with your dd (or both). Another option might be for the two of you to grocery shop during that time? Can you get out of the "sketchy" area with a 10 minute drive? Maybe actively search out other libraries, groceries or a class for dd? I can't see your sig file, sorry if these are not appropriate suggestions for her age.
  18. Can he comfortably write a paragraph? That seems to be a recommended milestone for starting WWS. There is a pinned thread at the top of the K-8 Curriculum board, "If you are using WWE or WWS..." That thread contains the author's thoughts on what to do between the two programs. We are only just ahead of you, so I'm just telling you what I've picked up in prep for us. We've been mixing WWE 4 in with some Bravewriter projects and the Sentence Composing books. I think the summary and dictation skills in WWE are important, even though they are hard, but my dc would burn out doing only that every week.
  19. My family has been enjoying Wonderpot recipes. Basically, you put pasta and other ingredients into a pot, bring it to a boil and cook 10 minutes until the noodles are done. I got the recipe from BudgetBytes, but the it is just begging to be tweaked. Yummy.
  20. *I* love her books. Great takes on the traditional fairy tales.
  21. what is the average per night cost for rv camping? We had friends tent camping this simmer who were complaining that fees alone at the tiny, county park with no water access was going to cost more than rent for a month. Sounds like the current housing plan is risky and really stretched your abilities for the next six years. Time to come up with a new plan. The money you have already paid is like rent, yes? Don't let yourself get drawn in to a deeper books by the sunk costs. Step back and figure out what you can afford and then look for something that will work in that. RVing could be one option if the costs fit.
  22. You might look at Science News, also.
  23. I'm new to using Anki and still investigating, here are my thoughts. 1) I have a different "profile" for each of my kids. That way they each get more practice with the particular cards they struggle with. When I add cards, I make a deck called "new" then expert it and import it into each profile. I then add all those cards to the main deck for each person. That way I'm not overwriting the individual's data. 2) sorry, no experience with CC. 3) I know you can limit the max number of new cards a day, I don't remember if there is a similar limit for new cards, I'm not on a real computer right now. 4) I think you are right about "suspend" I haven't tried it. Sometimes the number of "new"cards is set to 0, then increases for a day to introduce new cards, then back to 0 for a while? 5) can't help here, sorry. Although, my time is less than 15 minutes a week, but we are just using it for Latin vocabulary. 6) if our review time gets longer than 10 or 15 minutes I will have to revisit it 7) & 8) mp3s look easy, but I haven't tried them yet.
  24. Regardless of why your ds is stressed, wouldn't it make sense to cut back something? If you cut an outside thing (like only doing one sport per season) that would resolve c) and a) and leave you a bit of time to work out if b) is an issue. Keeping the big picture in mind - cutting any of these things doesn't mean it is gone for ever, just for a season.
