  1. I just had another idea for you! We don't don't for Bible curric, but DH read through Long STory Short (half of it or so) during devotional times with the girls. It includes object lessons, prayer, scripture readings, and application as it moves through the Bible (OT in this volume). Always points to Christ. Pretty open and go!
  2. We cross out spelling, and often penmanship in the higher grades. It's still worthwhile for us, since we have a large family and I need independent work texts :).
  3. I really feel that at this age, application is best provided on a spontaneous verbal basis by parents as the occasion arises. I'm not looking for a curriculum to provide that at this stage :). Deeper - we read Leading Little Ones to God every few years.
  4. I'm glad you came to a solution for your family. It does get tough at the end of 5th through 6th. Apparently it does get easier in 7th if you can get there? I'm hopeful since we're trying to press through 6th together :). I toyed with switching to Hake, but bought a copy of 6th and I'm working through it myself to make sure I know what I'm doing!
  5. We are way more laid back than that. We do memory work with our Sunday school and I just read through story Bibles with the little ones. One daily. We also do Postal Bible Study (only 1 lesson/week), Rod and Staff Bible book B in K, and CLE Bible in 1st and up.
  6. I called yesterday for my order. They are very speedy and polite.
  7. Your title mentions CLE, but your post doesn't? If you are happy with basic, practical writing, CLE does get the job done without a complicated supplementary program.
  8. First and second are very phonics based and might be hard to jump into. My oldest jumped into 4th and has done fairly well (in 6th now - it's a tough level). My littler ones are starting from the beginning. We are happy with it, just be sure to do the placement test before starting :).
  9. ACE LOL! It gets hated on hard and heavy, but we are pleased with it for science and social studies. It covers the basics, includes Canadian content (for social studies), and gets done.
  10. Just FYI for fellow Canadians - ordering directly from Rod and Staff is much cheaper in terms of shipping :).
  11. We do circle time together - scripture memory, hymn study, prayer, read aloud. Everything else is independent. Before I got started I wanted to combine for everything. I haven't found that feasible - more doable wih content, not doable with skills.
  12. Or you could just use the grammar portion of CLE and cross off anything you don't want to use. We sub the spelling for Rod and Staff, ourselves.
  13. We really like CLE. Because you haven't been using it from the start, I recommend starting in 3rd. The first two levels still contain a lot of phonics.
  14. It only came with 2 LU? There should be 5 all together. Check he online scope and sequence and it tells you what is taught in each LU.
  15. I started my oldest children at 6. I started my 3rd DD at 4, very casually, and it worked awesome! Formal preschool and K for all my kids from now on! Don't get me wrong, though, it is VERY relaxed, just enough to ease them in, and so they feel like they are doing school like their older sibs.
  16. I was going to go suggest CLE. Bcause it's a retention thing, I find their spiral works best for our family. Just do the placement test first, before buying :).
  17. I'm Canadian, too :). Ordering from CLE is your best bet and shipping is very reasonable.
  18. We stared with MUS, went to MM, and settled on CLE eventually. The spiral has been awesome for my children and it is much less 'busy' than MM and is therefore much easier to get done, for us. Also, download the scope and sequence for free at their website! It shows what is taught in EACH LU if you bought you could jump in midway.
  19. We like Read Write Type for building early reading confidence. That said, no online program could ever teach my children to blend. What tends to work best for us is writing individual letters on individual pieces of paper, sounding individually, then pushing together two, sounding together, then all three sounding together. CVC words. Together with a solid phonics program.
  20. We switched to CLE shortly before our 5th child was born. It has been a blessing :). We use it for Bible, Math, LA, and Reading. We also use Rod and Staff for spelling and ACE for social studies and science. It gets done consistently and without having to piece a million things together ;).
  21. We enjoy CLE Reading and Language Arts. Those two together cover everything without needing what can feel like a dozen programs :).
  22. I don't think Illuminations would help you streamline :). It is pretty parent directed. We use CLE for our core subjects for three children so far (11, 8, 6). Works wonderfully and gets done :).
  23. CLE spelling is not directly phonetic after 2nd grade. It is more topical word list style. I prefer phonetic teaching with Rod ad Staff.
  24. CLE works better for us than Rod and Staff because it is more independent (and more spiral). It's getting the job done here :).
