  1. I would love some feedback on Queens Homechool. I'm intrigued by it and am considering it for my 4th grader since we have struggled to land on anything we really like. I'm reading mixed reviews about Queens though some saying that it's not a full curriculum and too simple and light. I would like to hear opinions of anyone else who's tried it. TIA.
  2. Great! I will check out some of these. I've actually never looked at CLE before. I agree that some things are just boring. That's life. I almost mentioned in my post that I'm not looking to make everything exciting but was hoping that would just be assumed. Hehe. ;) However, since R&S is the *only* thing I've tried thus far, I was thinking that maybe a change might help bit. I'm also interested in finding something that has everything in one. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't.
  3. I could use some guidance in choosing a writing and grammar curriculum. My 9 yr. old daughter. This year we are doing R&S grammar grade 3 but she hates it. I know grammar can be boring so I may never find one she actually likes, but I'd like to hear some opinions on different grammar options to see if a switch might help. (We do a lot of the work orally, or on the white board, and I skip a lot if she's got it down and it's still not helping much.) We're also using Winning With Writing 3 for writing and it's okay... but a little dry. I'm not sure I really like it. She loves to write so something that requires a lot of actual writing is not a problem for her. What is your favorite writing and grammar curriculum and why? Oh, and I do want her to learn diagramming so the grammar needs to have that in it. It can also be one LA curriculum that has those components rather than 2 separate things. I appreciate any help any of you can give! Tracy
  4. Does anyone teach their children Greek instead of Latin and if so what curriculum do you use? Please also share if you don't recommend it and why. Thank You. :)
  5. Hi, I need some advice. We are almost half way through the school year and using Rod & Staff for language arts. I have a 1st and 2nd grader. My 2nd grader especially is bored to pieces with the reading and phonics and she's not challenged with the spelling. The grammar is fine. She's reads extremely well and LOVES to write and write and write. She would much prefer to write stories, do copywork, etc. She'll create her own "books" and she loves journaling but she HATES filling in those workbook pages! I just need some advice. How do I cultivate that love of writing she has? Can I ditch the phonics since she's reading and spelling so well? We can continue with the grammar, but I have to replace the reading and reading workbook component because she truly hates it but don't know what direction to go. We are in CC so maybe something to help prepare her for Essentials when she reaches 4th grade?. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!
  6. Thank you, Megan! I added R&S spelling. As for Science, yes, I'm going to use what they are learning at CC and add to it with things I find online, field trips, lapbooks, etc.
  7. sdunckel, I noticed you use a formal spelling. Do you think I should incorporate a formal spelling in 2nd grade or will the reading/phonics through R&S be enough?
  8. I just saw your post sdunckel. Thank you, that helps, too! If it will only take 5 minutes or so a day, I may just keep it. This is all new curricula for me so I haven't a clue how long all this might take! Thanks again.
  9. First Language Lessons teaches nouns (common, proper), and introduces verbs about halfway or more through. Writing with Ease has dictation, and copywork incorporated into the curriculum. Would you recommend just covering those basics through the year along with the WWE curriculum and skip the FLL at this age? I've been told that they really hit the grammar hard in 4th grade at CC so maybe it's a good idea to wait then?
  10. For those of you in CC, this is my curriculum line up for next year for my 1st and 2nd grader. I'm purchasing it this month (I like to have everything well in advance). Again, I'm new to CC and new to Classical in general so please advise. Is this overkill? Reading/Phonics - Rod & Staff Writing - WWE Grammar - FLL (for my 2nd grader only) Math - Horizons History to compliment CC - SOTW I've heard that some people wait to introduce grammar but I'm not sure when. What is the reason for this and is 2nd grade too early? Thanks in advance. Tracy
  11. Oh, so the passages are in the workbook and you don't physically have have every book (unless we want to read one in its entirety)? Ok, that's good to know! Thanks for the tip about purchasing the PDF as well. Would that be good as a stand alone or would you recommend purchasing both?
  12. We are very new to classical education and also joined CC just a couple months ago. I think I'm going to go with Writing With Ease Level 1 for my 2nd grader next year. I will also have a 1st grader. Can I use it for both of them and modify it for my 1st grader? Has anyone done this? Also, for those who have used it, did you have success finding the books at the library or is there a place that sells the book list as a package deal? I imagine that would be pretty expensive so I'm hoping the library has most of them. One more question... is it easy to follow? I do not need anything complicated right now. Ease of use is top priority. Thanks in advance! Tracy
