  1. For Math and Science curriculum, I do not think there is a too young. If your daughter is not ready/interested in BA when she turns 6, you can just keep it for later. I bought SM2 to SM6 in one order because my hubby tells me to just go ahead and buy. It was nice having curricula on standby.
  2. I am reading the Study Skills Handouts from here. My 3rd grader's teacher was talking about the SQ3R method and now I am trying to figure out what that is. His school also covers test taking strategies as part of test preparations for standardized testing.
  3. We spend less than $400 per month on food and toiletries for two adults, two kids, hamsters and a guinea pig. There are plenty of supermarkets and farmers markets near my home so it keeps cost down as we can get sale items from different supermarkets without wasting gasoline. We don't eat out other than fast food twice a month or less. We buy milk and vegetables organic. Fruits we buy in season ones. Meat and seafood we don't buy organic since the price difference is too high.
  4. Hubby is in the semi-conductor industry which pays well but does not have job security. His company is relocating people out of state. $100k in San Jose also goes further than in Palo Alto :glare: We always joke about the US101N commute jam into SF in the morning. Some of my neighbors work in SF.
  5. Overexcitabilities and the Gifted Child article Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities on Hoagies I have two intense, hyper focus kids and I am the same way myself. Still figuring my way.
  6. I just remembered that my mum was saying that she is happy my kids don't need memorise the times tables to 16's. She had to do that in 1st grade because of conversion from Ounces to Pounds. Maybe your MIL had to learn the times tables to 16 too when she was in school.
  7. Hubby is nice enough to eat the same meals everyday. Bread - 99 cents a loaf store brand Chicken - $1.29/lb Banana - 19 cents each Vegetables - 79-99 cents per lb Rice - $8 for a 20lb bag Egg - 15 cents each Margarine - $1/lb one day's meal for him would cost about $2 per day. We also buy closeout/"expire that day" items for 50-75% off. So a loaf of bread can end up being 25 cents. Onions at 25 cents for 2lbs. We also go to farmers market near closing time to get the "leftovers" at much reduced prices.
  8. My 1st grader does Art and Music as "fun". He also does puppet time for language arts when he wants to. He acts out using paper puppets what he is reading for us.
  9. We have a routine but no set time. Kids wake up whatever time they feel well rested, can be anything from 7am to 11am. They don't wake up at the same time usually. They have breakfast, than seatwork than reading. After reading time, we have lunch followed by art or science or playtime. They get restless after lunch which is why we get seatwork done in the morning.
  10. Can you type the ISBN number from your copy? Its easier to locate book details with the ISBN.
  11. Pineapple - main shuttle body Banana - booster Watermelon - orbiter
  12. For chinese, your Astro might enjoy Chinese with Mike on the internet for starters. You can download the pdf that accompanies the youtube lesson to follow along. While it is not academic, it is fun, free and good for as an introductary course. For japanese, your Link might enjoy NHK World free japanese lessons. You can download the textbook and the audio files. Link could start with the Japanese Alphabet first.
  13. Are they learning for academic or for leisure? The Japanese Language Proficiency Test page gives a nice overview of the testing requirements for each stage of competency for non-native speakers. Daiso has preschool Japanese workbooks while Kinokuniya has Japanese textbooks and workbooks. For both languages, it is easier and faster with a tutor.
  14. Her vocabulary is ahead of her spelling :001_smile: I used a dictionary at that age to edit my own compositions during proof reading.
  15. PBS Teachers link to World Religion: grade 8-12 activity ideas. They have a lesson plan, talking points and plenty of references on that page. Hubby and I had a discussion on the basis/tenet of all the world religions we are familiar with.
  16. Another option is for your daughter to take the Cambridge International 'A' and 'AS' level exams where you are now if it is offered. The exams for Biology, Chemistry and Physics have a lab component. ETA: the Cambridge exams can be used for university admissions and not just for meeting requirements.
  17. Would this book be okay for my 6 year old art self teaching boy? Our library does not have a copy and we are bad at the painting part of art.
  18. I am assuming it is CAVA. Our plan is for our boys to take their high school german exam at their German saturday school. That exam is accepted by UCB. For science, we intend to go for dual enrollment to meet the lab requirements. The CAVA yahoo group has a few parents that have been there done that and would be able to give you a clearer answer.
  19. Let your daughter dismantle a old VCR, cassette recorder and other electronics. Also a soldering kit, breadbox and an Arduino if she is interested. I repaired plenty of my parents electronics gadgets as a kid.
  20. man vs nature - The old man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway Man vs self - Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Man vs man - Crime and Punishment
  21. Have not seen these signs here. I have only seen political signs and sports (not school sports) signs.
  22. PBS NOVA Hunting the elements video can be watched online and the ipad app is wonderful. My local libraries has a good collection of PBS videos. Maybe you can check out your library. For Great Expectations, I prefer to watch BBC's version on youtube.
  23. My boys are slightly older. At your children's age, they enjoyed making their creations using ideas from these books as inspiration: The LEGO Technic Idea Book: Wheeled Wonders The LEGO Technic Idea Book: Fantastic Contraptions The LEGO Technic Idea Book: Simple Machines We bought our boys 2nd hand LEGO gears and technic parts from our local LEGO User Group annual "yard sale".
  24. At that age, maybe you can help her learn some project management skills? My parents would sponsor all my unschooling projects. My mum expects me to give her a draft of my project proposal, list of items that needs to be purchase and a budget. That means I have to go to the stores and do a survey on prices as well as work out what on my list cannot be store bought.
  25. I don't make my boys write it out. They get tired enough writing for LA writing. However I do pick some of the multi-step word problems from time to time on weekends and ask them to write out the steps.
