  1. I used to watch House every week, but I totally lost interest last season.
  2. My mom had the same reaction when I told her I was going to homeschool. After a year and a half, she has changed her mind and regularly tells me that she's happy that I'm homeschooling. She still doesn't understand it, but she's OK with it now.
  3. If I homeschool my youngest all the way through high school, I'll be 61! I plan to retire and do whatever I want to do.:001_smile:
  4. :grouphug: Sometimes tough love is the only option. I think it's harder on the parents than on the children.
  5. With all the help and money this family got from Dr. Phil, it doesn't seem to have helped much.
  6. I drive a Suburban that we bought out of necessity. We had two teens, a middle aged child and two in car seats. We couldn't fit everyone in our minivan and we needed some cargo room. It's OK and we still need all the passenger room sometimes, but my next vehicle will likely be a minvan. The Suburban is hard to drive in cities and hard to park because of its huge turning radius. I also don't like driving it in snow because it has rear wheel drive.
  7. When my father was a teacher, he detested these types of rewards. He said that poorly behaved or poorly performing students were rewarded the first time they did something right and the students who always worked hard and behaved were either overlooked or were not even eligible for the rewards or parties. It was extremely demoralizing for the hardworking students to never get the rewards. I understand the value of positive rewards in changing behavior, but it needs to be used for all students or it has the opposite effect on the students with the most desirable behavior.
  8. Until I came here, I had never heard of a church throwing a baby shower. Sometimes small groups within my church will, but it's not a whole church event. Honestly, I wouldn't want to attend a church that had showers for every baby because, since my *mulitple* late losses, baby showers cause me to have anxiety attacks.
  9. The Boy Scouts don't have any particular religious "affiliation". They only require that you believe in a "higher power" of some sort, but you can be Jewish, Buddist, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Wiccan or whatever. Some Packs or Troops are sponsored by churches and they *may* have religious activities, but boys are not required to participate.
  10. I've known this for years. My dad was a teacher and he frequently told me that his college classes were very easy, especially after he saw what was required of my major. My oldest son also tells me the statistics for education majors just to annoy his long time girlfriend who happens to be a teacher.:tongue_smilie:
  11. The majority of my property tax bill goes to the school district whether my children are there or not and per child money is not what pays for sports. In my area, because of middle and high school sports, there are very few opportunities for sports beyond 4th - 6th grade. They think that kids who want to continue in sports will just play at school.
  12. There are so many variables to the questions you're asking. Around here, rec soccer is about $45 for one practice and one game a week. At higher levels or competitive soccer, it can cost hundreds and there may be games or practices almost every day.
  13. My 9 year old still sits in a booster and he's perfectly happy doing it. My 5 year old is still in a harnessed carseat, but she's so tiny that she'll probably be in a booster seat until she can drive!
  14. Maybe the Ocean Futures Society? It is run by the Jean-Michele Cousteau and his children and they do all kinds of ocean conservation, education and research.
  15. I bought a harness when my extremely bright but very immature son was 2 years old. I couldn't take him anywhere without something catching his attention and causing us to lose him the second I was distracted. That harness was an answer to my prayers! Years later we were flying into San Francesco with a large group and large amounts of luggage and I had another 2 year old, so I dug out the harness and took it with me. While watching a huge pile of luggage and waiting for some people from our group, I put the harness on my son to keep him close in the busy airport. He thought it was great and pulled to the end of it and started BARKING LIKE A DOG at other passengers when they walked by. I was so embarrassed and that was the end of the harness use.
  16. My house is usually pretty messy and cluttered and my husband barely seems to notice. I tend to be more of a perfectionist and he's more of a hoarder, so much of the mess is his. I just can't keep up with the mess my family makes (and doesn't clean up)and he just keeps bringing home things he finds (from dumpsters, from the side of the road, that someone gave him...). For every bag of clutter I finally manage to clean out, he usually brings home twice as much! It's very frustrating for me because I find disorder frustrating, but I'm usually overwhelmed and just give up.
  17. No. I've been with the same pediatrician for 19 years and he didn't show any reaction at all to learning my son is now homeschooled. He was also seeing my daughter that day and talking about shots needed for kindergarten and said, "Even if you homeschool her,..." as though it was what he expected.
  18. We have one. It's nice on hot evenings and it doesn't cause much trouble when it's on low.
  19. I've been through three 13 year old boys and I would say it's very normal. I had one son who would get in the shower and then stand in the back so he didn't get wet!:glare: Another would shower, but didn't seem to know about soap. My dad was a middle school teacher and coach for 40 years and he just laughed when I told him and said that's pretty normal. He taught science and health and he said he had to do basic hygiene lessons frequently.
  20. I'm in the same boat. I have tons of scrapbooking stuff and I love to do it. It's a great creative outlet for me and, for those who don't see the point, my family sat down and joyously went through some of our old scrapbooks last night. Some of the notes and things I saved were very meaningful and would not have been in a regular photo album. I haven't found the time to do it in recent years and I'm sad about that.
  21. Math was never my best subject, despite the fact that I had to take Calculus in college. AGHHHHHHHHH! Anyway, I chose Math-U-See because it is very easy to teach and we can watch the DVD lessons together. My non-math loving son is really understanding math and I can't believe how much I'm learning too!
  22. I agree with those who say she should do two Cores and group the two oldest and two youngest together.
  23. I was taught to do it without the zeros. Everyone in my family who went to PS does it without the zeros. I don't require my children to use zeros either if they understand the place value, but I do teach them that they are actually multiplying by 40 and that is why they need to move it over to the tens place.
  24. I had planned to have a normal school day, but it didn't work out that way. I scratched my cornea on Friday and wasn't able to do anything all weekend. I needed a day to get some things under control. DH and my public schooled high school son were home plus the dryer repairman spent the morning here, so the distractions would have made it hard anyway.
  25. Does the police have a non-emergency number? If so, I'd call. That's a bizarre text!
