  1. We are doing AP Calc and AP English Lang. Dd is done with all her course work except one final for English. Otherwise all she has to do now is prep for the AP exams. It is definitely keeping her focused and the rigor up before senioritis can kick in. Also the school she is accepted to requires four passing AP scores and right now she has three.
  2. I never did understand that about the extensions. I couldn't do ours on time last year because of my back surgery and there was no way I could have figured out the calculations for the extension so I just paid the penalty. It wasn't too bad and it was only once in 35 years. Things happen sometimes. Just do your best.
  3. Monday- clean out the fridge vegetarian stir-fry with canned chickpeas (family actually really likes this) Tuesday- leftover stir-fry and salad with roasted vegetables Wednesday- instant pot lentil curry and brown rice Thursday- ???
  4. Definitely. One liked Saxon math, the other preferred online courses. Aside from grammar, I think we did everything differently for each of them. At least PE was the same; they both played volleyball.
  5. We went through 6A/B and then switched to Saxon 8/7. It worked well. Also I used the extra challenge books for the word problems. I loved those.
  6. Just make a simple table. Thirty-six rows with five columns. Each box represents one hour, for a total of 180 hours or one credit. This is helpful for courses that are open-ended like literature, art, PE, etc.
  7. There is a kit available on Amazon for this book. I purchased it but haven't worked through it yet. I was considering it for coop but we went with the Elegoo Arduino kit instead because I thought the kids would be able to do more exciting projects. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EKO6FZU?aaxitk=KCWtxx8D5Ij9D3dbRre3tg&pd_rd_i=B01EKO6FZU&pf_rd_p=e037c154-e093-48a4-b127-477e5e294e3f&hsa_cr_id=1381623850401&sb-ci-n=productDescription&sb-ci-v=Make%3A Electronics Component Pack 1 - Second Edition Kit Follows The Latest Make%3A Electronics 2nd ed Educational Book by Charles Platt
  8. I like Birkenstocks but there are some nice Ecco mesh shoes that are almost as cool as sandals but a bit better for walking.
  9. A couple years ago they canceled the international June test date. I found out the night before I thought both dds were taking the test. They both had gotten emails a couple months before telling us we could do the May date, but they didn't read their emails. Ended up having to do the October one. Two more AP exams and then no more College Board for me.
  10. We used Core 100 for ninth grade several years ago. There wasn't any writing instruction, just assignments. We supplemented with IEW.
  11. Rick Steve's has great videos about traveling all over Europe and tips for traveling light. If you go with him on a tour, you can only bring a carry-on. You've gotten a lot of good tips already. Good walking shoes and a cross-body bag are my travel musts. A scarf is very good for Rome even if it is warm to cover up when you go into a church or the Vatican. I wouldn't miss the Tower of London. Shopping won't be a problem, but the food in Rome is amazing and you should try to have some dinners out. They eat after 8pm. And budget for at least one gelato a day unless you have an allergy or something.
  12. I would give 1/2 a credit for 90 hours of work. I think drawing schematics and brief descriptions of how something works would be sufficient documentation along with photographs and videos.
  13. Elegoo has a nice kit for Arduino. We used it in coop for the 10 to 16 age group and it was a big hit. The Arduino Project Handbooks volume 1 and 2 are good books to go with it. Parallax makes a nice robot kit for Arduino too.
  14. It's also true where we are in Europe that most under 18s don't work except at a very few student jobs. More work at student jobs when university age but there are strict limits on the number of hours allowed. Grocery store clerks and other jobs normally held as younger teens as first jobs in the US are reserved for working adults here. They do have access to public transport in most cases or ride their bikes. They are expected to be more independent from a young age even if getting places takes an hour instead of 20 minutes by car. Parents still do a lot of driving, which I speak from experience here, to get the kids to their sports in the evening and weekends. Sometimes I wish they had more opportunities to work and drive like I did from 16, but overall they seem to have a lot of independent skills in other areas. My oldest is 19 and still showing no interest in getting a license. She's been too busy with her first year at university. I might have to push her a bit more. I just realized that they have a different license to be allowed to drive stick-shift. If you take your test in an automatic, your license only allows you to drive automatic, even though most cars here are still manual. BTW, drinking age is 16.
  15. Another reason to add to my list of why I think the Europeans have it right with a driving age of 18. Whenever I mention to friends here that Americans can drive at 16 they are shocked.
  16. I was looking at Nissan reviews recently and there was noticeably less headroom for the backseat passengers in the models with a sunroof. It's not an issue for children obviously.
  17. I've been gradually going whole foods plant based. I take supplements and recently had blood work done, but still waiting to see the results. I feel great though which is saying a lot considering I'm nearly 55, had back surgery less than a year ago, and am approaching empty nest. The biggest thing that has helped me is getting an instant pot so I can make beans, especially chickpeas, quickly and easily. Turns out the family likes the veggie stews and currys from the IP as well.
  18. Congratulations! I remember that thread three years ago and now I find myself in the same situation facing an empty nest. It is so interesting that you found your answer in poetry. I have always felt that physics people had a strong artistic side. I'm an engineer and am finding myself strongly drawn to teaching, especially math. We will see what the future holds for me. I have always appreciated and respected your posts and answers to questions on so many topics. Thank you for your contribution to this board and to so many of us that have used your advice for years with successful outcomes. I wish you continuing success and hope you pop in to the board from time to time. Cheryl
  19. Lanny is correct. Your son is learning a valuable lesson right now. In the future he should carry photocopies of all his documents in a separate bag to make contacting authorities easier. In some cases a copy of a DL is enough to legally drive and a copy of a passport makes getting an emergency one so much easier. This has always been my worry when my kids started traveling by themselves.
  20. How did she solve for sec? Most calculators don't have a sec button so you have to solve for cos and take the reciprocal. Or use a unit circle.
  21. DD has been accepted to University of Arizona, University College Roosevelt (the Netherlands), and Erasmus University College (the Netherlands.
  22. When I was working as an engineer I had five suits on rotation in various shades of blue and grey. I always wore white blouses that were very similar. All the men wore similar suits. White shirts weren't mandatory, but that was the reality at that company. The shirts were washable, but the suits were dry clean only but I found with the rotation they didn't need to be cleaned very often. During the same period of time my dh was military so obviously wore a uniform every day. Very easy to wash and iron. No worries about which shirt he wanted to wear on which day and if it was clean or not. After he retired from the military he needed to buy a bunch of suits and dress shirts. Now we seem to be constantly having to buy new shirts as the collars fray. The suits have lasted a long time and are probably out of fashion, but we have only replaced them as they wear out. So I guess I'm saying that the work uniform whether an actual uniform or a self-imposed one is the way to go for me.
  23. Clonlara has government and economics in their online program. They are fine and not too time consuming.
  24. I got an Instant Pot after Christmas and my family loves it. We are using it nearly every day. We are eating more beans and vegetables because it is so fast.
