  1. 1969 - the moon walk. We didn't have a tv -- my dad was in grad school, so I don't think we could afford one -- so we went to a neighbor's. I remember being told that this was very important, so I should pay attention, and seeing a lot of blurry figures on the tv, and playing under the tv, which was up on legs!
  2. Sadly, I didn't know, and hadn't ever really thought about it. I guessed right (and then googled it). I knew Kennedy was assassinated shortly after my parents were married, and I remember a weekly reader in K when I was 6 about Nixon (his re-election, I believe), so that left Lyndon B. Johnson.
  3. I won't do used undies, swimsuits, or socks for that very reason. But I'm fine with most other used clothing. (I won't do shoes either. Both because of thinking about someone else's stinky feet and because I've heard it's not so good on your arches, etc. to wear shoes that have formed to someone else's feet.)
  4. The Apollo moon landing when I was three and a half. DH was born that weekend, so he likes to tease me about how old I am that I can remember it.
  5. :lol:I've had my Android phone for just one month, and I sooo know what you mean. I've found (or DH has), so far: -A free Kindle app and a stack of free books. We've been reading "Wizard of Oz" at every opportunity. -A free geocaching app -A music tuner -A metronome, keyboard, and drum kit
  6. We've been using Real Science 4 Kids as a spine. We also love Magic School Bus (inc. the activity guides and DVDs) and the "Play and Find Out..." series from Jan VanCleave.
  7. We're finding our way into unabridged classics by trial and error. We start a book and if they haven't gotten into by about the third chapter, we set it aside for later. I thought my son the train buff would like' The Railway Children.' No. Same for 'Tom Sawyer' and ' The Great Brain.' ' The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' was, surprisingly, a huge hit. (He doesn't usually care for stories with any element of fantasy in them.) We just started ' The Wizard of Oz' and so far it's a go. I think the key is not to get your heart too set on reading a particular classic, but to be willing to start enough books that you find one they get hooked on. You can always revisit the others later, when they are older, or have gotten used to the classics.
  8. When my kids were five and three, they enjoyed Muzzy. It's pricey, but our local library had it. We tried out French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese. They liked the first three. We eventually picked up German and French on ebay. They also liked some little picture books by Barron's called "Bilingual First Books." They come in French or spanish and have titles like ' Colors'. I see some on Amazon, but I'm on my phone and haven't the foggiest how to copy the link.
  9. :hurray::party::party: It's here, it's here, it's here! It's here, it's here, it's here! I get to take it with me on vacaaation!
  10. Pencils that still have the erasers on them. The big kids leave them out and the baby eats the erasers. We have lots of pencils, so I think I don't need to buy anymore until the older kids have a meltdown, because they can't find a pencil with an eraser.
  11. We use LifeTime Personal Tables, which we found at Costco. They adjust to four different heights, fold flat when we don't want them out or when we want to bring them in our RV, and the longer legs on one side let them slide right up to be used even with the couch.
  12. :confused:Still waiting, hoping it gets here before we leave on vacation so we can bring it with us.
  13. :DAnything that the kids don't like, or that you use infrequently enough to not consume before it goes bad! Generally, DVDs and BlueRays are cheaper at Walmart. We generally have the biggest problem with things that are the same price as elsewhere, and now we have a HUGE bag of it.
  14. DH says many of the above: warm or hot water, deeper lancet, etc. He adds dangling your hands and shaking them, and relaxing (because stressing can close the capillaries). He's been dibetic about twelve years, and used to have more "didn't bleeds." Now they are getting rare.
  15. Same here, though he does help us with the messier science experiments, and sometimes comes up with some on his own that he remembers from his childhood.
  16. Google glycemic index. DH, who is diabetic, was told by someone who checks the glycemic index that he shouldn't eat apples, but could eat pears. He doesn't like either much, so he never followed up. He prefers to keep things simple, so he only counts carbs.
  17. Oh, and I should say, she was born on my 44th birthday, so my body is probably telling me I'm getting too old for this. My sil is ten years younger.
  18. I've been borderline high every pregnancy, but on my last pregnancy, when I went into labor, it changed into full blown preemclampsia. Because I'd already had one c-section (for a breech), they insisted on another. I'm one of the really rare cases whose blood pressure did not return to normal. She's nineteen months and I'm still on meds. That is quite rare. Most return to normal soon after birth, and most of the rest within about two months. (My sil was one of the latter.) There are meds for bp considered safe for nursing (I was on one called Verapamil, but anything in that class is okay). Once she was weaned, I switched to a more conventional one because the Verapamil gave me headaches. Hang in there. Do what you need to to be healthy for your little ones. They are here safely and that's the most important thing.
  19. They do have more than one warehouse, or however they manage that. We just ordered cds for sotw3 and sitw4 in the same order. They came a day apart from two different locations.
  20. We use Bull Frog. I don't know how it stacks up chemically, but it is Deet-free. We've also used Cutter Skinsations. It does have Deet. We've found the Avon stuff to be too perfumed. It sets off my allergies major time, so I can't even stand to put it on my kids.
  21. Crazy here in Utah, too. We've avoided the floods we saw in the early 80's only because they've kept the dams at all the reservoirs wide open. As a result, the rivers are extremely full and fast, and we've had an usual number of drownings this summer. (There always are some every summer, but usually 16-24 males doing something stupid, kwim.) Lots of little guys this year, very sad. August is usually our thunderstorm month, but they've been happening all through June and July this year. I went to an outdoor concert a few weeks ago and just as the concert ended, sheets of water started coming down. I thought I was going to get swept off the road, and I was nowhere near a river.
  22. Whew, no, no, not pregnant this road trip, though we did go on an extended road trip in the rv during my last pregnancy! No, I was just saying that parking our rather large truck just gives me that same sense of not knowing quite where I am in space that I've always had in late pregnancy. I was huge for all three pregnancies. Apparently, I carry quite low and to the front, so I was always getting asked if I was having twins. All my babies were tiny, too. The biggest one not quite seven pounds. The only one who waited all the way to her due date was my smallest. I drive a small Accord most of the time, so driving our big truck feels really big and bulky. I trend to huge the line and I always have to hop out and make sure I'm properly within the stall when I park.
  23. Oh, DH said something about that months ago and I had forgotten. It's good to know they have kids activities. That can be a make or break decision with little ones, no matter what Mom and Dad would like to see. Thanks!
