  1. Dyslexic 6th grader here too. We're going with the readalouds, copywork, narrations, dictation exercises, timelines, mapwork, and schedules of Ambleside Online Year 4. This will cover History, Science, Geography, Literature, Reading, & Writing Math: Saxon 65 and 76, but we do have TT7 on hand as well in case Saxon is a bust. Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary: Wordly Wise, Spelling Skills 5 & 6, Simply Grammar Art: Artistic Pursuits Nature Study: Outdoor Hour Challenge blog Extras: Show Choir, CCD, Weekly field trips/tour/classes I'm feeling confident and ready. Ambleside has always worked well with him. But this year I have to stick more to a set schedule and I need to make sure I prepare the lessons ahead of time instead of the morning of :blushing:. I'm also going to incorporate a lot more art projects, science experiments, and a history book of centuries to go with what we're learning about. The more hands-on, the better for ds.
  2. Just ballet in my dd's studio would run about $50/month for one 1-hr class a week. The annual registration is $25. Trained professionals do the teaching, older student assist. Costumes for a recital are usually around $50. and yes, we keep the costumes. (The above is what dd started with. Now dd is 15 and on the dance competition team. Her tuition would normally be about $250/month, but she teaches there so it's free. She takes 6-7 classes a week and has privates for her solos - which we pay for. Competition costumes can be anywhere from $75 to $200. And all of her teachers are professionals - mostly coming from major dance companies or Broadway - even a Rockette once. She goes to a school for performing arts and takes 7.5 hrs of ballet and 7.5 hrs of modern each week for free)
  3. I worked 6pm-10pm for years (now it's 5pm-9pm). It's not necessarily a night shift, but it makes it possible to do what I need to do during the day with the kids. Dh is home by 6 and he takes over (cooking, chauffeuring, etc). Even with 20hrs a week the pay is excellent. There are plenty of these jobs out there - good luck!
  4. I love it!! You look great! I always wanted to take tap since I was little. I asked my dd to teach me the time step a few years ago, but I'm hopeless, lol. Congrats -and keep it up!!
  5. Hi I'm Angela, mom to 3, and living in NYC. I made a few appearances on the old board - mainly to wonder if it was ok to join if I was an unschooler. I remember someone responding that it "was ok, we won't tell" or something like that, lol. I think it was in 2005. I started hs 7 years ago, mainly due to a gifted dd bored to death and fidgety at her gifted academy. It was a great 5 years with her at home - very unschooly with some Charlotte Mason thrown in. She then auditioned for and was accepted to LaGuardia High School for Performing Arts in NYC (her dream school). She just finished her 2nd year there. Hs was so wonderful that ds started after 2 years of PreK. He is now in 5th grade and might want to go to a public high school based on his interests. We follow the Charlotte Mason method and will be doing a very relaxed AO Year 4 in the fall for 6th grade. I suspect he has dyslexia and I'm so happy to finally have an evaluation appointment scheduled for July 10th. Oldest dd spent all but one year in public (and Catholic) schools. She decided she'd like to homeschool for only 8th grade and it was a wonderful year. She went to a high school for journalism the following year and graduated in 2011. She will be starting her sophomore year of college in September. Dh is in the advertising business and I work part-time for the cable company. We live in a cozy apartment in Queens.
  6. LOL, thanks. Cliques are everywhere and certain people only like to talk to other certain people. It's ok.
  7. Thanks. It's funny - I've had the "name" abkjw01 since 2001 when my son was born. It's all of our initials and the year. I know it's so boring and no one can just pronounce it. Sigh. I have used NYCitymomx3 lately on other things, though. I wonder if I can easily change it here.
  8. I have accepted the fact that I'm just not part of the popular clique here. I do still love this board, though. :001_smile:
  9. I do this, too. I also spray this cinnamon bed bug spray all around the beds and most of the carpet. Oh, and I try and keep all bags with clothing (suitcases, duffels, dirty clothes bags) off the floor. And we don't use any of the non-disposable drinking glasses in the room (ugh, the news story I watched about that).
  10. My dd has been a competitive dancer since she was 7. When we started homeschooling (dd was 8), we kept it basic and light. I think we spent less than 2hrs a day on academics. However, we made a point to do a lot with the homeschool group - classes, field trips, and monthly academic clubs (geography, creative writing, art). Dd has always learned best through experience and hands-on activities. Seatwork was only for reading and math. Depending on the time of year, dd would have anywhere from 6 to 20 hrs a week of dance on top of several weekends away at comps and a week away in the summer.
  11. Field trips are a huge part of ds's education. We try to go on them weekly. The places we go usually are for a class, guided tour, or free roam with our homeschool group. Here's some we did this year: Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty, the U.N., NBC Studios, about a dozen museums, NY Botanical Garden, NY Hall of Science, an environmental center, beaches & parks, the Apple store, Hayden Planetarium, a walking tour on Superheroes in NY, behind the scenes in a big toy store, supermarket, and big department store, our town's historical societies, and the NYC Christmas windows & Rockefeller Center. I think field trips are such a great hands-on learning experience - and so fun!
  12. I work evenings (20hrs/week) around dh's work schedule. I started 6 years ago after being a SAHM for 12 years. I'm a sales rep in a call center for the cable company. The good thing about that is they have late hours, weekends, and part-time is available. It's really great money, I have all day to spend with the kids, and I'm home by 9:30pm. See if that's an option for you.
  13. 6th Grade Ambleside Year 4 (most of the schedules, methods, & selections) Saxon Math 65 & 76 Wordly Wise Gr. 6 Spelling Skills 5 & 6 Simply Grammar Outdoor Hour Challenge blog (nature study) CCD Youth show choir Weekly field trips
  14. My schedule with ds usually looks like this (except the past few months when we put the main focus on Language Arts and Math to get ready for a standardized test): We usually start around 10am. 1-2 pages of spelling workbook Readaloud with oral narration 1 page of grammar workbook Readaloud with oral or written narration 2 pages of math Read a poem from scheduled poet (and or the poet's bio) Several lines of copywork Readaloud with narration Ds does independent reading for 15 minutes Artist, Composer, or Nature study. Maybe also Spanish. We should be done before 1pm Readalouds are History, Science, Literature, Shakespeare, Plutarch, and whatever else. Each of the lessons are from 10-30 minutes each. Ds is mildly dyslexic, so I read most things to him. Some subjects are not scheduled into the mornings. Health is via regular discussions (and ds is always asking tons of questions). Art is something ds does every day but we may give Drawing with Children another shot. Music - ds is in part of a youth show choir and PE just happens regularly without having to schedule anything. This is 4 days a week (Mon-Thu) and Friday will usually be a field trip.
  15. No. We don't plan on homeschooling for high school. NYC has incredible high schools and my kids can pick one based on their interests. Out of 500 high schools in NYC, about 30 are excellent and worth considering. My oldest dd loves to write so she chose a high school for journalism My youngest dd is a dancer and she chose to go to the high school from the movie "Fame". Their high school experiences have been wonderful. Ds has many interests right now, but he may choose a school for film, science, performing arts, architecture, engineering, or math. But then again, if ds chooses to keep homeschooling through high school, I'm prepared for that too!
  16. I second the ibuprofin! I've been buying the huge jar from Costco for years.
  17. I like the idea of a mom & pop store, but I've noticed they usually have less variety and higher prices than a big chain store. Unfortunately in this day and age it's all about convenience and savings. I prefer to shop at the big chains.
  18. It's about 80 degree here in NYC today. The rest of the week will be in the mid-high 70s. Still too hot for me.
  19. We're changing back to some more structure and more time spent on academics. Right now we spend about 1.5 hours 3 days a week or so. Now, for 6th grade I'm shooting for 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. The year will involve lots of the Charlotte Mason method, Ambleside Online Year 4, Saxon Math, and weekly field trips. Ds will be doing a lot more reading and writing as well.
  20. I like copywork for my mildly dyslexic ds(11). He writes 2-3 sentences that are important facts taken from the days history or science readings. I see it as serving a dual purpose: not only is he getting in his handwriting practice, along with getting used to seeing and writing proper sentences, but the physical act of writing down facts helps him retain them better. We just changed it up and tried making it more meaningful than just busywork.
  21. Here's a fun site: http://www.internet4classrooms.com/grade_level_help.htm
  22. You don't have to include any specific materials. I usually write only a general plan of instruction. For the OP, I have IHIP samples on my blog. One is AO-specific and the others are based on the worldbook.com typical course of study. Either work fine with the AO curriculum. I don't use the forms the district mails me. I make my own. It's easier that way. Here are samples of what I use(d). Take from them what you like if you want. Don't stress about the paperwork. :) AO IHIP (with this IHIP I felt like doing things differently and listing the books we'd use. It ended up being way too time consuming and we scrapped many of those books anyway. I prefer my worldbook IHIP) Worldbook IHIP (This is a nice outline of subjects and sub-topics based on grade level. It's general enough to work with any homeschool style and curriculum. We are starting a relaxed AO Year 4 in September and I will probably be using this version again)
