Note that they are quite long. As much as I'd like to, I don't think I'll be printing entire books. If I were to use any of it, I'd probably print individual chapters.

The TMs are interesting too.

I see they also have Algebra and Geometry texts/with teacher's manuals.

Good point. For everyone else, if you go to the link and click on Parent Directory, there are other various books. http://static.cemseprojects.org/smsg/ The "Matrix Algebra" is for 12th gr., I believe. Functions looks interesting.

ETA: I finally clicked on the alg/geom link at the parent directory - indeed, there are whole books, two for each subject, plus it looks like the algebra might have a second edition, and TMs. Frank Allen was a participant in the algebra book, at least. This predates his 1964 text.

Can anyone tell if there is a particular order to the texts? I see Math for Jr High and Studies in Mathematics and Elementary Functions and Intermediate Mathematics.

You say this is a two year course and I see a bunch of pdfs, so a couple a year?

I should prob just know this but you all know my math issues

I was talking about the Jr High being a two-year course. I can't remember where I first saw that referenced.

first year:

vol 1 part 1

vol 1 part 2

second year:

vol 2 part 1

vol 2 part 2

For example, in the TM for vol 1 part 1, there is a teaching schedule which allots the 8 chapters over 106 teaching days.

I'm not sure what the order would be for the rest of the courses, except that it's likely the order they are listed in, in the parent directory.

I was reading old threads discussing the New Math/pure math vs. the applied math of the '70s (perhaps that's too simplistic).

I wonder how these old texts would compare to something like AoPS, and what the main similarities and differences would be. Jane, if you've ever compared Dolciani to AoPS, I'd love to hear your comments (or anyone else's comments, of course). Maybe they're so different it's no use comparing?

Having looked through some of the TM's:

Algebra is labelled for 9th grade.

Geometry is labelled for 10th grade.

The courses on Elementary Functions and Matrix Algebra are both labelled as half-year courses for 12th graders.

I don't see a label on the Intermediate Mathematics, but process of elimination and the fact that nothing else is labelled for 11th grade suggests 11th.

ok, now I understand. That makes much more sense.

AoPS came on my radar after my son completed the various curricular levels so I have not compared. Kathy in Richmond may have the answer to your question though.

I really need to buy the AoPS Number Theory text though. It looks like a course I would love to teach.

I've been looking at the first junior high book, and I'm impressed with the questions dealing with logic. I'll definitely use parts of this book next school year (maybe while my old Dolciani prealgebra book airs out some more!).

Moise and Downs are both in there too. So is R.C. Jurgenson. Is that the same Jurgenson talked about on these boards? There are a lot of heavy hitters involved with this project. I remember reading about it but, at that time, I couldn't find the books anywhere. So thank you for unearthing these pdfs.

Yes, that is the same Jurgenson who co-wrote a Geometry text with Dolciani.

So, I printed out the TOCs from grade 5 up through geometry of the SMSG - much easier to see what's there. I also printed out a few random chapters from the Jr High books today. Just in case. Because we don't have enough math :D

I finished printing Russian Math yesterday. If we have enough time next spring/summer, I'd like to do RM after finishing MM 6B and before starting the Dolciani Prealg. Maybe just parts. I received my 1985 Dolciani Prealgebra today, and tomorrow the 1973 one should get here. I quite like the look of the 1985 one, and I wound up ordering the TM.

1985 Dolciani sounds like a fine wine. The 1973 one sounds like a legend. I think it's time I stopped shopping - who knew it would be so much fun :D

I love the 1973 Dolciani! (Then again, I used either that one or an earlier edition when I was in school. :p) The 1973 book I got looks absolutely brand new. Unfortunately, though, it doesn't smell so new, and I'm allergic to mold. I'm currently working on killing off the mold spores so that ds and I can use the book!

I used the 1973 one in 6th grade. The second I saw it at Abebooks I knew it was my old text. It did smell a little musty when it first came, but it's fine now. I got the 1985 one too just for kicks. The formatting is easier to follow, but it doesn't have the set theory. And that one smelled fine. :tongue_smilie: I saw the teacher's manual for 1985 but it was over $80. Did you find it cheaper wapiti? I'd love the manual - or at least the answers to the even problems for 1973.

The reason I'm not sure which edition I had in school is because mine didn't have the original cover. Back then it was cheaper for schools to send books off and have them rebound and recovered, so mine had a generic-looking cover with just the title on it. The same was true for our elementary math books.

I hope I'm able to get the smell out of my book (and out of the Warriner's English, too!). I'm very sensitive, so the books probably wouldn't bother others as they do me.

I ordered the TM from Follet, after I saw the super expensive one elsewhere. http://www.fes.follett.com/follett_fes_general/bookdetails.cfm?bID=370137&bc=Used&P=1&isbn=9780395430514&L=0&ShareID=0&FLP=0&PR=0&CFID=9563443&CFTOKEN=22880680 oops, looks like I got a 1988 TM - how did I do that :001_huh: :glare:.... Oh well, another twenty bucks down the math drain. grrr.... It has the same picture on the front on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Pre-Algebra-Accelerated-Course-Mary-Dolciani/dp/0395430518/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309928743&sr=8-1) as the 1985 book - maybe it'll work anyway. I'll let you know when I get it. There's only one left at Follett.

I hope my 1973 doesn't smell. I'm kind of sensitive to mold myself (and one of the kids has a mold allergy, though it won't be his turn with the book for a few more years ;))

I don't know how you people can remember what prealgebra book you used! I remember my prealgebra teacher, or at least what she looked like, LOL, but not the book we used (7th gr, around 1980).

ETA: my 1985 text actually has a copyright date of "1988, 1985"..... hmmm.... did I get the wrong text?

OOOH! Warriner's English! i still have two of those from high school - second and fourth courses. :D

I hope the smell goes away soon - I'm sensitive with that too.

It might still be the right TM. Let me know if it seems to fit.

My text just says 1985. What does your cover look like? I assume it's just a reprinting, not a revision.

If you used Dolciani books in High School, you may have used the 1973 Pre-algebra. I had the course in the 1981-1982 school year, so it was the edition being used at the time.

It makes sense that it may be a reprinting. What's even weirder is that Amazon has a date of 1987 for my text's ISBN. Whatever... It's the same picture on the cover as the 1985 ed., though the same picture is also on the 2006 revised ed.

I have no idea what books I used in high school either - is that pathetic or something? I switched school districts between 7th (prealg) and 8th (alg), and then I went to a Catholic high school, so it's unlikely I would have had a continuity of publishers even if I could remember them LOL.

I had forgotten the Middle School text, but beginning in High School we had to buy all our books (private school), and I saved most of them. So even if I wanted to forget, they are sitting on my shelf staring at me. But the 1973 has such a distinct cover that the second I saw it, I knew it was the one I used. I do have a visual memory, so that definitely helps.

Thanks, wapiti! There is no visible mold on my books, but I know it's there by the smell. Even though I live in a humid climate, I did put the books outside for a couple of days, which I have found to help in the past; I'll do this some more before we use them. I can't use cedar chips because I'm allergic to cedar. I haven't always been, and I used to store things in a cedar chest; but I had to get rid of all of the stuff I'd stored because I couldn't get the smell out of it (I can see now why cedar chips can kill small pets!).

For right now, I have them enclosed in a cabinet with newspapers. The other things I plan to try are to put them into an enclosure with baking soda (I don't want the baking soda to touch the books because I react to breathing in baking soda) and to put them into Ziploc bags with tea bags.

I would also try the mid-day sun. Not that I have experience, it just sounds right, LOL.

My '73 arrived today. No moldy smell. Slightly wrinkled pages. I haven't looked at it much yet - I have a feeling I may use the chapter on sets and use the '85 for actual prealgebra. I'm wanting to work on sets this coming school year - prior to dd doing prealgebra - as our logic.

Besides set theory, how does the rest of the 1985 edition compare to the 1973 edition? What about properties, divisibility rules, etc.?

Also, I believe you can nuke your book for a minute or so in the microwave to kill mold. Might help...:001_smile:

LOL. I've been known to put stuff (like the box to some Discovery Toys that someone gave me when ds was younger) into the dryer (on the sweater/shoe rack thingy) to kill mold, but I'm afraid to do that with these books, especially the 1973 book, because I'm afraid it will ruin the binding.

I haven't had a chance to look yet - but Gail might know ;) - I think she said she's in the process of making a comparison. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

As for the microwave, I'd be a tad afraid of starting it on fire, LOL, but I suppose a minute might be ok.

Well, I have successfully microwaved some books, and they seemed to suffer no ill effects. :001_smile: of course, you may not wish to risk it, but it was a good solution for us. :001_smile:
