No-Frills Math Suggestions for a Hard to Fit Kid
mathmom replied to mathmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It's so like me to NOT read directions. LOL! Day one is already infinitely better. Peanut is like a new math kid. Of course, hormonal, dramatic Bacon is not thrilled that she did almost every problem in courses 3 through 6. Oops! Maybe that's why math isn't so hard for her? -

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I know what to do now! -
No-Frills Math Suggestions for a Hard to Fit Kid
mathmom replied to mathmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Wonderful suggestions! I used SM with my oldest at this age, so I'm somewhat familiar with what would happen if we switched. Honestly, getting permission to do only half the problems helps. I have been having her do everything, so maybe that is the big problem? Before I completely jump ship I'll move to cutting the work in half. The problem is I love what Maria does so much that it is hard to pick and choose. :001_smile: -
With a name like "Mathmom" you would think I had this one covered, but, honestly, my 8 year old has me stumped. Peanut has always use Math Mammoth and done very well, but lately I've noticed that she is bogged down by the amount of information on a page and the lack of space between exercises. She is currently 2 chapters in to Math 4a, but I think she might benefit from a switch. It's hard because I already have MM up through 6th grade thanks to my older daughter's success with the series. Any suggestions? Here are Peanut's requests: 1. It should have room to read or "breathe" as she says. 2. Even if it isn't consumable, she would like to have space between exercises. 3. She's not a fan of the overuse of color or clip art in her math program. It's funny, because she is the artist in the family. 4. She likes the chance to be challenged, but doesn't consider just making a problem longer much of a challenge, i.e. working with 6 four-digit addends does not mean a challenge to her. I am tempted to just print free worksheets from the internet for skill work and have her work through the Singapore Math Challenging Word Problems series. She has enough experience with bar models to get started on the level 2 book, I think. But I wanted to ask here to see if there is a series that I may be missing.

We used those books, too. In fact, my daughters still like to use the picture on top/writing on bottom book even though we don't use Draw, Write, Now anymore.

Pre-Algebra-tell me what you're using/used
mathmom replied to teamturner's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
My 11 year old finished the MM series and will be using a McDougell Littell text for pre-algebra. I won't say it is my favorite (that would be AoPS), but she may transition back to a regular school in the next year or two, so I want her to have some exposure to more typical texts. I will supplement with math contest materials and rich problem solving activities that I create. -

We have used MM throughout for my oldest DD and tried CM My Business Math with 4b. It was a bust. I'm very curious about these books.

I would also say WWE made a world of difference for my 7 year old. She tunes people out often and had some bad listening habits before we really got into the series. After a year and half she is amazingly attentive!

I feel like I haven't been around here in a long time! My blog has been neglected about as much, too, but I am working on getting back in a routine. Here is our picture from today: http://msmathmom.blogspot.com/2011/04/wordless-wednesday-looking-forward-to.html

I don't have a sample to share, but I will say that we are on lesson 5 of the program, and I couldn't be more excited about it. My big girls are begging to do science every day! I use R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey for my 1st grader and just pull the readings that fit for her to do while my 4th grader does the Classiquest work.

Is there a less mom-intensive grammar like FLL3/4?
mathmom replied to truebluexf's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I switched my independent 1st grader from FLL 1 to GWG 1 and she loves it! Now that she gets the format, she can really run on her own with only a little discussion. -
He is reading his way through some John Irving books for fun. Sushi read A Prayer for Owen Meany at my request and quickly asked for more. Right now he is in The Cider House Rules. As for school, he finished up readings in gothic lit and is moving in to Mississippi Writers. He'll read Black Boy, One Writer's Beginnings, My Dog Skip, As I Lay Dying, and The Firm.

Chex Party Mix: To Make or Not to Make?
mathmom replied to kalphs's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I voted other because I make it all the time. Christmas is no different. But my version is a little different than the traditional. It has different spices and gets some considerable heat from jalapeno pretzels. -
Can someone help with this doll problem.
mathmom replied to lynn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Target sells similar boots for 18" dolls. The boots have a slit from the top of the back of the boot almost to the heel. That slit is just enough to slide the boot on and off. Can you make a slit in the boots? -
Can someone walk me through Natl Merit scholarship stuff?

I can also recommend PA Homeschoolers for an online course. My son is currently taking AP Human Geography and is very impressed with the teacher and the course. -
Little Egg was taking some time with our soft dolls this morning. http://msmathmom.blogspot.com/2010/12/wordless-wednesday-ella-christina-and.html

We combine music, art, history, and science for Bacon and Peanut. The topics we cover are the same, but my expectations for Bacon are higher given her age.

PSAT results yet, anyone?
mathmom replied to AuntieM's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Still no scores here either, but I'm thrilled to read about the successes of others. Way to go, especially those of you who improved your scores by wide margins! -

I couldn't get my cs rep to pass me off. She said I had to contact the counselor of the school myself, get her to call the counselor hotline, have CB give Sushi's code to the counselor, then the counselor should call me back with the number. -

This was our last exchange with CB this morning in almost the exact same wording, up to the part where you got to talk to a supervisor. If Sushi's scores aren't in the mail today, I'm trying again. -
I also enjoyed Beginning Geography. It was a nice fit for my 6 year old.
