HSing on a budget, can we talk free curriculum sites?

We are on a really, really tight budget. I try to get everything I can from the library(Like my SOTW book, and WWE).

Can you share some homeschooling educational sites you enjoy that are free, rather then purchase expensive curriculum?

This would be for a 5th-6th grader.

Thanks in advance.:001_smile:

I don't know much about the free sites cuz everytime I have checked one out I would spend more money paying for ink and paper than if I had bought a wkbk.

I would do as you are doing now for science and history. Use the library.

Everybody has a different idea of what it means to be on a really tight budget so I don't know if this will help or not. For math and grammar the cheapest that I know of is Rod and Staff. They are non-consumable so you can buy them second hand and re-sale them for about what you gave when you are done. If you get the text and TM for both subjects you should be able to find them second hand for about $40 total.

you can look at samples here:

http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Rod_and_Staff_Grade_5/

(You don't need the worksheets and you can do without the test sheets)

I know where you are! We share the same boat. I hope this has helped some.

These are really great, thanks for the suggestions so far:001_smile: My DH is out of work, and we can't collect unemployment, so we are literally living off our meager savings, and our family is helping with food. Our house? Well, that is another story. We are praying DH gets work before we cannot pay or mortgage anymore. Things are tough all over.:001_unsure:

Hang in there mama!

My dh has been out of work for a long time now (about 2 years) and only picking up odd jobs. Family and friends have been helping us out too! We are blessed in that we own our mobile home, so as long as we can pay the tax it is ours. It is tough but we can all make it through. If I had 5th/6th stuff I would mail it to you!

the library. Also for the future (Algebra & Geometry), there's GeoGebra

http://www.geogebra.org/cms/

Lots of books and books-on-tape (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Anne of Green Gables) from the library. We'd listen in the car and have discussion.

Free comics from the Federal Reserve Bank:

Here is what I have, but I haven't really weeded through the Spanish sites yet to see if they are good, just found those in the last week. Hope it helps. Oh yeah save noney on ink and paper by using a dry erase board or chalk board. My husband will be laid off this month and was out of work for a few months last year, so I know how you feel. Good Luck.

This site coordinates with the one above. It has interactive

quizzes, lessons and games.

Middle School and High School Math:

Pick out a course and check out the video lessons. It also has pencil and paper

examples. (This is Prof. Berger from Thinkwell.)

http://go.hrw.com/gopages/ma-msm.html

These links have e-quizzes, e-workbooks, animated math, lesson help, and

power point presentations. (I've considered combining these with Prof. Berger

above for a full class.)

These links have printable parent/student guides. These include reteaching and

ANSWERS. Also on each page are links for home tutors, brain pops, extra

examples, and self-check quizzes and tests. (I considered using this site by itself

for my dd, but she needed a little more explanation.)

Other Glencoe workbooks

http://www.glencoe.com/sites/georgia/student/mathematics/assets/workbooks.html

If "I" were going to do math for free, I would use the Houghton Mifflin site. This link has 6 printable worksheets for every lesson in the book. I would use either the reteach or ELL worksheet off the computer to discuss the concepts with my child. I would also use the teaching models when they were available. (Think powerpoint presentation, 1 per chapter.)

http://www.eduplace.com/math/hmm/g_5.html

Then I would bop over to the kids area and do the online extra practice.

http://www.eduplace.com/kids/hmm/g_5.html

If my child needed extra practice after that I would print out one of the other sheets.

If "I" were going to do LA for free I would read, read, read from the library and do these activities on the computer for grammar/reading skills.

http://harcourtschool.com/menus/trophies/grade_5.html

Also, the Scott Foresman grammar books aren't really meant to be consumable, so you could have your student do those on regular paper off of the computer.

HTH. I kind of got carried away here. :D

WOW, this is a wonderful post! I appreciate everyone's contributions as well. I am interested in your Latin resources. I am starting to do my research in hopes that we may be able to start with in next year.

http://www.kidsofcourage.com click on downloads, give the info, click on downloads again. A countries and cultures curriculum at your fingertips with all the activities and fun right there...and enough to last a couple years!

It's good for youngers too but it's quite a bit of info to take in, so there's plenty of "meat" in there for olders as well. You could grab some library books to go along with it for whichever country you are on.
