ktgrok
Just came across this concept and I am intrigued, I think. I just am not sure if I will actually like it, lol. If you have made savory oats, what did you put in it? Would it be good with say, roasted peppers/onions/tomatoes with a sprinkle of goat cheese? maybe with a fried egg on top?
Zinnia2
I just like them with fried eggs on top. Like you would eat grits, but oatmeal.
Laura Corin
I make this a lot. For example: sautee mushrooms in olive oil, then add dry steel cut/pinhead oatmeal. Add water in the normal amount of liquid for your oatmeal, then add some miso paste to taste. Season to taste. Or, even easier, start with frozen or tinned grilled vegetables/ratatouille and just add the oatmeal as above, perhaps using bouillon and perhaps parmesan instead of miso. I usually eat it with Greek yoghurt on top for protein, but an egg would work well too. Edited October 15, 2021 by Laura Corin
Jaybee
I don't like sweet oatmeal, so I just salt mine like grits, add a little butter and some walnuts, and we're good to go.
Ailaena
We tried it with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, and Parmesan with an egg on top and two of us loved it and one hated it. So we eat it like that occasionally Treating it like risotto or grits works best for us, I don’t think I’d like it with meat.
dsmith
I just can't wrap my brain around the idea of savory oatmeal. Grits, yes, no problem, but oatmeal I think would kind of gross me out. I have used it as an ingredient in meatloaf instead of breadcrumbs, and I liked that. It may be one of those things that I would have to try if someone else made it, but I'm not going to make it. TexasProud
Yeah, as someone mentioned, this makes me think of grits. Though, sorry, please do not take my native Southerner card if I say I don't like grits. 🙂
Idalou
Grits, oatmeal, malt o meal, cream of wheat, they all can be topped with sweet or savory. Same with rice, my grandma would put raisins and sugar in rice for us a kids. For us it just depended on the time of day we ate it, lol. I can't see steel cut ones cooking fast enough, but google says pinhead = steel cut. Steel cut take a LONG time to cook. I did find "scottish oatmeal"which says it can be used to make oatcakes - it cooks in 2 minutes in the microwave if making normal oatmeal, vs steel cut which take 20-30 minutes on the stovetop. https://www.bobsredmill.com/shop/vegan/scottish-oatmeal.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw8KmLBhB8EiwAQbqNoBMML895wGZ_q_KmvuBpA7ZUJ-KvZx0SnOm7em4M3ox0YzBmHuSaThoCRXQQAvD_BwE Thoughts? This is the recipe I use. Just skip the Marmite and use the water. I use rolled oats, which cook in the microwave in two minutes. Those sound like your Scottish oatmeal. cintinative
This is so funny. Friends of ours had us over for dinner the other night and they had savory oatmeal. It was the first time I had tried it. His had ginger and mushrooms in it, and probably lots of other things, and as toppings he had sweet italian sausage, soft boiled eggs, and cheese.
