UmMusa
My 12yr old daughter wears hijab and is looking for a nice outfit/dress/skirt for her uncle's wedding in May. She has teen taste but is a size 12 in kids which makes all her 'dress' options make her look like a little girl. Plus, all the party dresses out there right now dainty, big skirted, flowery sleeveless, and short! I know we're going to have to be creative by using cardigans and maybe loose pants or something, so what ideas do you have for us to try? I went to Macy's and Nordstrom yesterday to see what was out there. She can't fit into anything Juniors sizes.. she is very little, like I said, a size 12 or 14 in girls. The wedding is evening and dressy but not 'formal'. so the main criteria: Long enough sleeves to cover arms (or with use of cardigan) Long enough length to go to ankles (can be loose pants or skirt or dress) Not tight Girls size 12 or 14 nothing too frilly or flowery :D any input will be appreciated! Occasionally
Something like this with a cardigan?
Jen in NY
What about having something made? http://simplicity.com/p-8576-burda-style-formal-dress-jacket.aspx
TrulySusan
Look at www.cwdkids.com . My dd was in girls sizes while all her friends were in juniors/ladies and this website had more mature choices. If you type "maxi" in the search bar, it will bring up lots of long skirts and dresses. Also, I know a lot of people here hate Justice, but they often have longer length skirts that could be paired with a top from somewhere else.
idnib
I think you'll have better luck after Easter when the more frilly and flowery stuff is gone. Try searching for "maxi dress" and see what you find. They are nice and long but almost always sleeveless so she'll need a cardigan. Here are a couple of examples: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/soprano-racerback-maxi-dress-big-girls/3984204?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=6824 http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/maria-casero-back-bow-maxi-dress-big-girls/3983828?origin=related-3983828-0-1-FTR-Rich_Relevance_Recs_API-1000079&recs_type=related&recs_productId=3983828&recs_categoryId=0&recs_productOrder=1&recs_placementId=FTR&recs_source=Rich_Relevance_Recs_API&recs_strategy=1000079&recs_referringPageType=item_page
Word Nerd
I found a cute but not frilly/cutesy maxi skirt for DD9 at JC Penney. If she can wear girls' 14, she can also try juniors 0 or 1.
idnib
I like this dress with a black cardigan and it comes in petite XS: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/style-co.-petite-printed-peasant-maxi-dress?ID=1955192&CategoryID=55596#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D478%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D21
Spryte
I think there is a juniors maxi dress going on lightning sale at amazon today - at 5:30. If she could swing a 0 in juniors, it might work with a cardigan. It's black, but looked cute. I'm eyeing it for myself, or I wouldn't have had any ideas!
JFSinIL
Maybe find a Juniors size 0 dress that can be tailored to fit her? Guys get suits taken in all the time - why not a young woman's dress?
Starr
Macys has a couple. This black skirt would go nicely with just about any top you would like. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/miss-understood-girls-belted-maxi-skirt?ID=1947213&CategoryID=5991#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D26%26slotId%3D12%26kws%3Dgirls%20maxi The old style of wearing a sip underneath keeps dresses from being so clingy. Although dc's friend wears legging under all her dresses.
trulycrabby
Here is a selection from old navy. Most are too old for your DD, but some would look very pretty with a cardigan over them. http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=maxi+dress I especially like this one, and the slit in the skirt can be sewed up. It comes in petite sizes, too; perhaps a petite XS would fit her: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=248121022

Katy
I suspect your best bet is going to be maxi dresses or skirts, with a cardigan on top. Here's some style inspiration. I just searched on pinterest. This is pretty: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/14355292538261657/ Other ideas: https://www.pinterest.com/MissMistyDiane/hijabiprincess/ https://www.pinterest.com/nikahexplorer/islamic-dress/ https://www.pinterest.com/nayzakn/muslim-fashion/ https://www.pinterest.com/nazrinjhan/hijab/ https://www.pinterest.com/malbrouck/heres-to-the-hijabis/ https://www.pinterest.com/wawawarda/hijab/ https://www.pinterest.com/nurullahmadd/hijab-style/ https://www.pinterest.com/karimah79/modest-muslim-fashion/ https://www.pinterest.com/lunazizi/hijabi-fashion/ https://www.pinterest.com/mamwar/muslimah/ I didn't see too much in children's departments. I checked Target, Old Navy, and Forever 21. I'm thinking it might be easier to wear women's petite. Here's a woman's petite XS (size 0-2) maxi dress that would be great with a black cardigan and maybe a bright colored hijab: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=41725&vid=3&pid=439772022 Here's a similar one in bright blue: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=41725&vid=3&pid=439772032
LibraryLover
Chasing Fireflies goes up to size 12. There are some gorgeous dresses there. Many are for younger girls, but we still get the catalogue, and my 15 yr old wishes some of the outfits came in 14 or 0. I recall there were many long dresses that could be worn with cardigans or shrugs. I seem to recall pants as well,. It's been years since I really looked through the catalogue. Katy
I'm not sure if any of this will work for her, but you might like it for you! http://www.shukronline.com/index.html
MBM
How about Garnet Hill or J Crew? They both carry size 0 and even size 00. They also have girls' clothing but the styles might be too little-girly. Garnet Hill is having a 25% off sale that ends today. ETA: Garnet Hill has really pretty cardigans.
go_go_gadget
In the US, your best shot for finding a multitude of acceptable options in one place (rather than maybe one acceptable item out of every few websites), might be to search for ''modest'' dresses. Most sites will be marketed to conservative Christians just because that market is bigger here, but the motivation is similar and most dresses don't carry actual symbols, so it seems like it could work. Actually, I just did that and found this site, that allows for impressively diverse searching by faith tradition: http://www.modestclothes.com Can I just say how pleasantly surprised I was to find a site like that? Modesty isn't a concern I share as such, but it's wonderful to see people recognizing and facilitating similarities between groups so often portrayed as being at odds.
almondbutterandjelly
LL Bean as a good selection of colors of cardigans here: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/68095?feat=503657-GN2&page=fine-gauge-sweater-button-front-cardigan Your dd would wear an xs or xxs. (For comparison, my dd is a size 14 girls in LLBean and a 12 in girls at Lands End. 14 at Justice. She fits nicely into women's xs in LL Bean, as far as shoulders. The length is a bit longer on her -- it covers her bottom.) Several of these would look nice with some of the Justice maxi dresses. Happy shopping! umsami
I saw a bunch of cute long maxi skirts in the girls department at Target just this week. They were pastel colors, and you could combine them with a pastel cardigan and matching hijab. (So I'm assuming maxi skirts must exist in other stores for girls too this season.) Add cute sandals and you're good to go. :) Justice has maxi skirts, as does Kohls in the girls department.
LisaKinVA
You've got some great suggestions. I just want to add, we've done fairly well with petite petite, and petite small options, too.
