JFSinIL
My turn my turn! Would you eat this? Making chili today - unopened carton of beef broth dated Oct. 2014 - use or toss? I have newer cartons, I just don't want to waste this if still safe to use.
wapiti
I would. (Assuming it passes the sniff and taste test. Y'all don't want to know what I used yesterday that was dated Oct 2014...) Beef broth in chili? Interesting!
Guest
Unopened, sure.
DawnM
Yes, but I typically go several months over the expiration dates.
ThisIsTheDay
Yes, as long as it's never been opened. A lot of those sell by dates are arbitrary. It's not fresh or dairy.
RKWAcademy
I would. But try it first. I once had an expired chicken stock in one of those cartons give a metallic off taste to the food. I think I did not look at the expiration before I used it.
kiana
Unopened, yes, as long as it passes the sniff and taste test. But I would give it the taste test before I dumped it into anything.
Tammyla
I would use it, but I wouldn't feed it to my kids.
Amy in NH
Yes, I would use it without hesitation.
Word Nerd
It's most likely a Best Used By date. I'd use it.
catz
I'd use it for sure.
Guest submarines
Based on your thread title I thought we'd be talking about time travel. Bummer. Yes, I'd use the broth if it smelled fine.
justasque
Yes, checking by sight, taste and smell before dumping in with the chili.
JFSinIL
Yeah, I messed up with the date there, do not know how to edit that. I can't rely on smell/taste as I have never had a sense of smell, and have a reduced sense of taste (as far as I know. Since smell is part of taste, probably. i know herbs are pretty green specks, with no taste.)
thewaka
Yes if best by and smelled fine. No if use by.
mellifera33
I would use it, if the aseptic carton is still sealed.
Pawz4me
I would use it w/o a second thought.
