In light of the recent posts, and other threads on the boards... I'm glad to know this. You can't hide behind your religion or your politics when it comes to hate speech.

Well. As a commenter on the original article pointed out, legitimate concerns over Common Core (are there? I don't know) are being shoved over for Godwin's Law, fear of socialism, fear of gays, fear of secularism, and religious persecution. It think it's honestly because Obama. That's it. Obama.

I did serious research about moving to Canada in 2004. They didn't want us. :( And the husband says he doesn't have enough body fat to handle the climate. So we stayed, and I spend a disproportionate amount of time hassling my elected officials and generally being a loud-mouthed, obnoxious political activist (especially when it comes to LGBT rights).

This was posted somewhere here earlier. I saw it, grabbed the link, and moved on with my day. :( I have no idea who to give credit for in posting this. Anyway. I just checked it out. My kids are all signed up. It's like BSA without a troop - or the homophobia or molestation. :glare: If you're looking for something to keep kiddos occupied this summer - this could be it. Worth checking out. Looks like kiddos can "friend" each other on there, too. If anyone wants to have kiddos follow each other, PM me.

So... Canadians recognize that freedom of speech does not mean your can scream whatever spew is running around in your brain onion passersby without intervention?

Well, you know, "higher" education -like literacy and cultural awareness - is elitist, Audrey.

 

I would send my kids to school if Obama was teaching their classes. Then, I suspect, there would be an expectation of thought. But, of course, I do aim to change society, so I'm probably not her audience.

Not only would I send my kids to school if Obama was teaching their classes, but I'd totally have a beer with that guy. And Michelle. They both seem like they'd be a TON of fun to hang out with.

Similar to the US Bill of Rights, we have a Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms -- section 15 of which says and means this. I think they made the right decision. What they are saying is that a Freedom cannot infringe on another's Rights.

Right. The interpretation of our Bill of Rights seems to have missed that memo. That's what I was getting at.

I think the SCOTUS has had the memo in the past. I think it's just a matter of having enough thinkers on the bench who realize that a Constitution is a living document, not writ in stone. Although there have been unfortunate times when personal and conventional politics sat in those seats, there have also been Courts who have made amazingly progressive rulings (for their time) in the past. There is no reason they can't be doing that now and in the future.

I agree. I wish the many others who seem to believe "rights" mean unfettered ability, regardless of harm or intrusion to others, would go back to their middle school citizenship class.

 

There seems to be a remarkable lack of civility laws here. Unless you count the so called laws that are really intended to make areas undesirable to homeless people. (The "civility laws" against panhandling, etc) Brusssels has apparently had the for quite a while, but has recently changed the law to allow on the spot fines instead of police just issuing court summons.

 

Which leads me to and interesting morning ponder: If people can be stopped from voicing rude, intrusive, hateful comments, would that trickle down from conscious filtering between thought and speech, to not even thinking the thought, to ultimately being a more positive presence in the world? Hmmmmmmm. I wonder.

Haven't you heard? The Constitution has been elevated to the level of infallible, unchangeable, God-inspired document second only to the Bible. Or so I've been hearing in my neck of the woods.

I want to work out with them. I read that they both work out early in the a.m. If I had the First Lady and the President as motivation I could work out for hours. Not that I have a fantasy about the President working out or anything.......

 

Plus, Mrs. Obama is kick butt in fitness and it would be so much fun. Once I had someone tell me I have "Michelle Obama arms" and that was one of the best compliments ever.

At first I'm thinking this woman is out of luck since she signed it. Then we get to the clincher- school offers her job to this woman's fiance! Who also engaged in relations hence the baby!!

Yet they do not see the double standard that sooooooo many xtian churches/faiths hold and cling to. The catholic church takes women back centuries........

I get credit for this one :) I was talking it up on some other thread a while ago - my 11 year old has been involved for months - its really cool! she'd love some friends there

This is exactly what's been bothering me. Can someone explain it to me? This is a serious question.

 

I'm old enough that I was in college and grad school in the 80s when there were big fights in the academy about teaching the Canon, when Bill Bennett came to prominence, etc. As a liberal, I've always felt a bit guilty that I am attracted to the idea of making sure my kids have a grounding in the Western canon. But now conservatives on the board are mad that schools will teach on ED Hirsch principles? I really don't get it. Would they object to a Reagan-authored history book?

I was a grad student and a prof in that era. It was horrendous, really, in academic circles. I've always been in favour of teaching the Canon, and made no apologies for that. I doesn't mean I discount the contributions from the margins or including them in a well-rounded study program, but it does mean I wouldn't emphasize them over Canon. Of those who held the same or similar position, I was one of the only "liberal" profs. It was certainly unfamiliar comapny to keep, but it made me realize that "liberal" politics and "liberal" education aren't the same bedfellows at all. So, I find it very strange, indeed, that Common Core has been taken up as a political charge, and stranger still that the ones charging against it are the very ones who would have been most likely to champion it years ago.

Quiet weekend here. I'm going to have to cover my tomatoes. We should not have freezing temperatures in March here in Central Florida, but we're expecting close to freezing. They barely survived a surprise freeze a few weeks ago and I fear this one might just do them in. But climate change isn't real.

Today is the opening of lacrosse season. I'll be on the field with the kids from 8:30-1 tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll get a short workout in before we take to the grass.

 

Sunday, staff workout before the Y opens, then I plan to lay around all day. And do laundry.

Busy weekend.

 

Soccer, pokemon league, dinner with a friend tomorrow.

Kohl's with my momma Sunday morning, then off to taste my friend's first try at home brewed beer. Fingers crossed!

 

We went to see Jack the Giant Slayer today. Fun movie!

My eldest has two individual GS cookie booth sales, but at least that's it for the year. Other than that, mentally preparing for Great Wolf Lodge next week -- must ready my defenses for non-stop Radio Disney.

I was so happy when ds outgrew Radio Disney.

 

Thankfully, GWL is the only place we hear it. The kids are still more into Spike Jones and TMBG than teeny pop.

No weekend plans here for me. Other than a usual hour of housecleaning tomorrow morning (which actually relaxes and calms me), I plan on catching up on some reading and sleep. DH and DS12 will be building a Lego table. DS8 and DS5 have big plans to bake a cake (Oh, I guess I will be doing something after all) and they're asking for a movie night on Saturday.

Next weekend should be nice and busy. Opening weekend for the Green Valley Book Fair!

Soccer for Ds in the morning, then grocery shopping.

 

Sunday, I'm kicking them all out in the morning for a movie or whatever, and then in the afternoon I'm taking off for a 2 hour massage. I'm finally getting a MUCH-deserved day off. And I need it soooo badly. The house is already clean, so I will get to enjoy it.
