Recommended Posts

I'm leaning toward the following for my 5.5 and 9 yr. old kiddos:

SOTW 1

RS4K pre-chem & bio, Noeo Bio I and II

FLL 1 and 3 OR Emma Serl's PLL and ILL

Donna Ward books for Canadian History

Reading selections from Ambleside

L'Art de Dire for French

Rand McNally Geography Workbook

English from the Roots Up

RS Math A for ds and D for dd

Listening to music & observing art prints for Music and Art study - maybe reading about composer and artists

Copywork from poetry

HWT printing for ds and cursive for dd

Some kind of reading program for ds but haven't decided which - Teach your Child in 100 Lessons, Phonics Pathways, McGuffey Readers, Hooked on Phonics, Teach Your Child in 10 Minutes a Day??????

Continuing ....

10 yo, 5th grade:

Right Start Math Level E, then Singapore

Latin Prep 1, goal of finishing the book

Lingua Latina, goal of finishing through Cap. VI

Elementary Greek

TOG history, field trips

Literature from time period/my choosing

Classical Studies - unsure. I may have him re-read Greek myths, because he was pretty young when I read them aloud to him the first time, and because I think you can't re-read Greek myths too many times :)

I'm still, yes, still, unsure about what he'll do for writing this year. We will either continue using CW, or I may have him do the same assignments as his brother's writing class, or I will just use SWB's ideas for his stage ... no idea yet.

He'll also do science informally and through Scouts, and is learning html and UNIX.

Piano

Swimming lessons

6 and 7 year olds, 1st and 2nd grade:

My nearly 8 year old is a little slower in language arts, and my 6 year old is terribly bright, so they're pretty much at the same level. My 6 year old is actually the better reader.

Writing With Ease

First Language Lessons (they're at different places in the book)

Right Start Level B (they're at different places in the book)

Explode the Code for the older one

All About Spelling

Lit selections from LCC - fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and Greek myths.

TOG history, field trips

Piano, Swimming, Scouts

Older one is a geology nut, so I will try to find lots of geology/natural history activities for us. Luckily, there's this big Smithsonian thing here ;-)

My goal for the year is to become a hard-nosed, draconian homeschooler who makes her kids do difficult things well every possible day.

HHAHAHAHAH!! That is quite funny!

Yeah. I'm reluctant to list what materials we'll be using because I'm tired of feeling guilty and flaky when I drop them three or six months into the year.

For the 8yo, our goals are

- instant recall on those times tables,

- intro to long division and operations on fractions,

- mastery of the pencil so that writing isn't such a chore but a tool, and

- awareness of the "detective work" good readers do when analysing literature

- finish Big Book of Lively Latin Volume I

For the 5yo the goal is to get him up and reading. Yesterday he sounded out popcorn on the microwave. Yay! I really have no math goals for him yet. He's naturally mathy, and the sort of playing around with concepts he's inclined to do is enough at this stage.

I also have a reading list set up for the year, focusing on the medieval era, but with a few American history and classical mythology books tossed in to meet state requirements and for religious purposes.

When it comes to science, opportunities and resources abound, and my kids would do everything if they could. So, rather than setting a science goal, I'm setting science priorities: astronomy, meteorology, physical geography, and geology.

Not very traditional, hm? Maybe next year I'll be sick of having a curriculum in the original sense instead of "curriculums" in the homeschooling sense, and I'll do a 180 and buy Calvert or Oak Meadow or something.

I'll take the guilt (just kidding, I don't feel guilt about it) and the feeling of flakiness, if I don't have to list out my goals ;-)

A non-homeschooling friend once said to me, cheerfully (and obliviously), "I can't believe it doesn't have any negative effect on a kid to be constantly switching from one program to another. I mean, you'd think they'd never get good at anything. But your kids are smart!"

Um . . yes . . . it's all part of my master plan, you see . . .

*Memorizing - Promises of God (from pastor's children's sermons); 10 Commandments, Doxology, the Lord's Prayer, going to start the Apostles' Creed

*Currently working on days of the week

*Preschool-in-a-bag activities, which a group of us completed together to minimize cost and maximize socializing!

With 4yo:

Phonics Pathways

Simple addition and subtraction in every-day life

Listen, My Children, and You Shall Hear (Betty Lou Kratoville)

With 2yo:

ABCs, 123s

I am also teaching two hs middle school girls French I two days a week (the older sister of one is my babysitter :) ) For this I'm writing my own stuff, using the Easy French Reader by R. de Roussy de Sales, ABeka French I, En bonne forme (Houghton Mifflin), Barron's Complete French Grammar Review, and a fat Larousse dictionary. Yes, I majored in the language in college!

My main goal for this unofficial preschool year is to get a routine in place and to set up a learning environment in my home. I'm scared to buy real stuff still!

  • 1 month later...

We're getting a late start this year, the 15th of Sep. was day 1 of homeschooling for us. Ugh, now we'll really have to cram. We had an "unforeseen glitch." :tongue_smilie: So, here's the plan:

For my Kindergartener:

Abeka - penmanship (manuscript), phonics charts, readers, ABC Bible memory verse cards

Calvert - phonics sliders, Discoveries in Music, readers

Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, with flashcards and magnet board

Horizons Math K, with Primary Math Manipulatives from Calvert

BOB Books - we use these for his reading practice w/ OPG

SOTW 1 & Streams of Civilization 1

Hodge-podge of Life Science sorted by phylum/class/etc. (Animal Kingdom, Human Body, Plants)

Art - ?? Still choosing! Atelier or Artistic Pursuits

PE - Martial Arts Lessons

Bible - we use a Bible (there's a novel idea!), various children's Bibles, Abeka Flash-a-Card series, Daily Bread devotionals, etc. Weekly, we do a story, character value discussion, memory verse, and if it relates to our history/science then I highlight those links.

Structured Reading - I read to him and follow the words w/ my finger so he can follow along from a book I select based on content or grammar/literary elements.

Fun-Time Reading - I read any book he wants to him, or he looks at them on his own.

For my 2nd Grader:

Abeka - Penmanship (WWP 2 manuscript to cursive), Spelling 2, Primary Bible Reader, & Phonics Charts for drills

Writing - WWE 2

Grammar - FLL 2

Bible - same as little brother

Math - Horizons 2, but he's on L. 50, so I think we'll move into 3 before year-end. Also Primary Math Manipulatives from Calvert for hands-on learning.

SOTW 1 & Streams of Civilization 1

Science - same as little brother, more feedback required though

Music - Guitar Lessons

Art - Still choosing, either Atelier or Artistic Pursuits

PE - Martial Arts Lessons

Structured Reading - Primary Bible Reader for now, we'll move on to other titles through the year (Aesop's Fables are on the list next)

Fun-Time Reading - He's reading a Geronimo Stilton book right now

Add to that lots of library books, board games, hands-on real-life learning in the house & garden with me and outside with Daddy (changing tires & other vehicle maint., hunting, ATV rides, household repairs, etc.), "recess" (bike-rides, backyard football, and other PE activities), and a homeschool co-op that meets every other Fri.! Hopefully I can re-introduce Spanish after the new year. By then we should be settled into this schedule and be able to add something. For now, I'm just trying to stay afloat! ;)

Everything in my sig. line, I am adding ,3 TLP guides a year ( I fell in love with these this year, the letter writing one has been a HIT!),I will switch over to BJU Science 4 for ALL kiddos, and thats about it other than moving everyone up a grade level in the rest:)

We're in our third week, though some of the stuff we started earlier. Here's our line-up. This schedule is a total change from what I had intended to do. DD 11 wanted Sonlight, so I got it for both after looking at the catalog. :)

DD 11

Sonlight Core 5 for history/lit/Bible

Galore Park SYRWTL English 2

Calvert Spelling CD 6

Galore Park SYRWTL Science 1

Galore Park Latin Prep 1

Singapore Math

Artistic Pursuits Book 1 (grades 4-6)

Piano, violin, dance

DD 9

Sonlight Core 1/2 for history/lit/Bible

ABeCeDarian and Phonics Pathways (she's a good reader, but needs phonics)

Apples and Pears Spelling (just ordered this)

HWT (finishing print then cursive)

Developmental Math with Singapore (DM is working well for her)

Living books for science (Pagoo, Handbook of Nature Study per AO)

Barry Stebbing's I Can Do All Things

Piano, swim team

For both, artist and composer study, nature study, I'm trying to add in some of the AO books and Shakespeare, plus additional poetry. But I'm not pushing it if I can't except for poetry. The Sonlight Core 5 poetry book is kind of lame IMO. Plus, dd 11 is doing some of the books suggested by her English book. I've also decided to try to add in some DVD's this year. Shakespeare, for example. History documentaries. Science.

I think that's it...and fwiw, it's going really well...but it's early yet. ;)

I had planned to do Sonlight all the way around, but some financial circumstances prevented it so here's what we've got:

DS 10th

TOG Year 4

Positive Action for Christ (Bible)

Abeka Grammar

Teaching Textbooks Geometry

Abeka Spanish 1

Apologia Chemistry

DS 3rd

TOG Year 4 with ongoing historical fiction read alouds

Spelling Workout

Finishing FLL/then R&S 3rd

Writing Strands

Positive Action for Christ (Bible)

Math U See Gamma

Winterpromise Science

DS Kinder

TOG Year 4 (here and there, at his choice to listen to read alouds)

Positive Action for Christ (Bible)

Get Ready/Set/Go for the Code

Math activity book from WalMart/move to Math U See when ready

lots of reading!

It's actually been the easiest year so far to get going despite not being what I *planned*! God knew best ;) and maybe we'll be Sonlighting next year.

We'll be doing everything in my sig line (which includes some things we're finishing from last year). In the next couple of months we should make a few transitions in things we're finishing up-- due to suddenly moving/packing we didn't "finish" everything last year and took almost 3 months off!:

Ds6:

SWO D --> SWO E

Minimus Secundus --> Latin Prep

MP Greek Myths --> MP Famous Men of Rome

Ds4:

If we get him reading this year, we'll probably add a slow Prima Latina (he's begging to do Latin) and maybe FLL.

I can't imagine that anyone is interested, but I'll post just to clarify my own thoughts.

For the 8yo and 6yo I have

ETC 1.5 (still trying to get 1) through 8 if they ever decide they want to do it.

Singapore 1A-1B (I have more, but I think they will probably do these maybe. Still need to get the WBs)

a couple books lingering from Core 1+2 to finish up

no idea what living history I'll get for them for Ancients. Still working on that list of books. I'll probably add Core 1 and 2 books I didn't get that are geography and history related.

SOTW 1, 2 for when we start Ancients

Artistic Pursuits K-3 book 1 (still in the US)

For the 12yo and 14yo I have

TT Math 7

Sonlight Core 5 (almost done and then we're onto Core 6)

books from AO and HO for historical living books

Writer's Jungle and Lively Art of Writing

Artistic Pursuits K-3 book 1 (still in the US) and 4-6 book 2

History of the Ancient World (Bauer)
