Jean in Newcastle
Dd9 asked (among other things) for a set of American Girl books for her December birthday. She doesn't know that I bought them for her. Today she found the books at the library and checked them out. It's too late to stop the order. I'm bummed because they won't be fresh for her. Chelle in MO
Can you say..."You know, since you asked for those for your birthday, you should hold off on reading them in case you get them. That way they'll be fresh! And if you don't receive them as gifts, you can check them out then." I've done that w/my kids in similar circumstances. Rosie_0801
Owning a copy of a book you like is an even better feeling than reading something for the first time. It has duration. :) Rosie
Swirl
DS did the same thing last year. I took it away from him and told him that I need to read through it first just in case there was any questionable material. It set on my dresser for 3 weeks because I couldn't find the time. He was pretty upset though, because he had already read every other book in the series and I never pre-read those-and they were just about baseball. :D

Unlikely you'll get much reading done in the pre-Christmas season...;)
aggieamy
I'd accidentally take them back to the library and then postpone any trips for awhile. :001_smile: Then again, I'm not parent of the year so take all my suggestions with a grain of salt. MamaT
Even so, checking them out of the library is not the same as having them for your very own.

SnowWhite
In this case, at this age, unless it was her only nice gift I would suspend the surprise element and "hint hint" as a previous poster suggested. "You know, daughter, birthday is right around the corner and those are on your gift list.... you might want to wait on reading those." ErinE
Like pp, "pre-read" them, but if she's already read a few, don't worry about it. I bought a series of books for ds9 and he's on his fourth reading. Having your own personal library at that age is a joy.
cathmom
Hide them. One year I got a book out of the library that was brand new. It disappeared the next day and I couldn't understand what I had done with it. My birthday was a few days later and my dh had gotten that book for me, so he took the library copy and hid it from me! NanceXToo
Maybe you need to find some "assigned reading" and she won't have time for reading those just now... tell her you'll renew them for her...but don't get around to it... lol

I think I might do this one. This kid is a smart cookie and would figure out anything else. Unfortunately our house is so messy - losing something like this would not be out of the ordinary. 6packofun
I agree. Hide them or "accidentally" return them and worry about explaining later. LOL You could start a really fun, distracting read-aloud to keep her mind off of her lost books, too. ;) I've done this a few times! Maybe there is an American Girl book that she won't be getting or hasn't read that you could get out of the library to distract as well. NotSoObvious
Ohhhhh, my girls love those books so much! They read them again and again. Sometimes they'll sit and read one whole series in an afternoon! We own several sets and they reread them and check out different ones from the library. I wouldn't worry about it. They'll be shiny, new, and all her own! :)
