ProudGrandma
there used to be a line put out by target, but I can't right now come up with the name. But they were nice looking girls, Barbie sized, nice, modest clothing. My daughter liked them. Maybe someone here will know the name. If I get time later, I will check too. amy g.
Only hearts dolls. They aren't at target anymore, but you may be able to find them online.
jillian
We like Moxie Dolls http://www.moxiegirlz.com/ More of an alternative to Bratz but I like the more modest clothing and more realistic size (minus the huge head lol). Obviously not all of the outfits are more modest but in general I find that they are.
Dmmetler
My DD likes the little sister Kelly dolls better than Barbie, but they're hard to find clothes for and to dress/undress. Mostly we went from Kelly to American Girl around here when DD really wanted to start dressing and doing hair on her dolls.
jplain
We have a few Barbies, but have steered the grandparents to Groovy Girls instead. They're totally different, because they're soft cloth dolls, though you can choose dolls with bendy limbs. We thought they were more appropriate for younger children, and IMO they're no different from Barbies in terms of how they can be played with...aside from their hair. SailorMom
I think the "Only Heart Club" dolls look wonderful - they're on Amazon.....
WishboneDawn
I don't think there is a good substitute. Sorry.:D (Loved Barbie when I was a kid, even as a tomboy) Edited October 27, 2011 by WishboneDawn
Little Blue House
DD has an Only Hearts doll and horse that we bought from Target. It has held up really well. Unfortunately, I don't think Only Hearts has nearly the amount of clothes (getting a Toy Story 3 visual here ) or accessories that make Barbie so fun to play with. Perogi
I really like the Only Hearts dolls but my dd's prefer Barbies. I don't know if it's the hard vs soft bodies? Also, I think they like to pretend to be a woman in playtime rather than having dolls that are also little girls.
LidiyaDawn
I don't think there is a good substitute. Sorry.:D (Loved Barbie when I was a kid, even as a tomboy) Me too ~ along Barbie got tossed aside for a bit when I got my Jem dolls :D for the question: Ty Girlz? (do they still sell them? dd14 had some a few years ago…plush dolls that had codes like webkinz) Polly Pockets? Strawberry Shortcake? (I saw those are back) Oh I saw this pink vampire doll thing at Walmart - ok dd14 just said "they're called Monster High dolls"… it was pretty cool looking. Suzanne115
Liv dolls are nice. They are made to look like teenagers. Their clothing is much more appropriate too. My daughter prefers Barbie, but I think the Liv dolls are a fairly good substitute. Suzanne
Tap
If you are willing to go in a bit different direction, Groovy Girls are good for the younger kids.
Momling
Does an alternative exist? I grew up with the sunshine family.... I had the Sunshine Family too!!! My girls seemed to really like the "Only Hearts Club" dolls from Target.
MHowell
K never did Barbies, just the American Girl dolls.
KarenNC
Does an alternative exist? I grew up with the sunshine family.... What is it you specifically don't like about the Barbies? That will help in giving suggestions for alternatives.
Spy Car
What is it you specifically don't like about the Barbies? That will help in giving suggestions for alternatives. Prolly how they turn all black and smelly when you set 'em on fire :D Otherwise, they are cool. Bill
Maus
Do you sew? It's OOP, but often on eBay or Amazon: The Doll Book by Estelle Ansley Worrell has soft dolls you can sew that are the same size as Barbie and period clothes you can make for them or Barbie. My daughter likes Barbie and Liv World dolls. My youngest daughter likes to pull the wigs off the Liv World dolls....
Upward Journey
We have Madeleine dolls & a Miss Clevel :) Miss Clevel is shaped like a 40yo woman, no joke ;) I'm not sure if they're even still made, but I think the manufacturer was Eden. Anyway, these are the dolls that I'm saving for when I have granddaughters. They are very well made.
Tangerine
I just got a catalog in the mail today from "Little Missmatched". They have dolls that I thought were quite cute. It made me think of this thread. http://www.littlemissmatched.com/Catalog/LMM-Girls
awtl
I like the Hearts 4 Hearts dolls. They are beautiful little dolls that represent girls from all over the world. Part of the proceeds go to charity. http://www.hearts4heartsgirls.com/
