madteaparty
I just started reading the Percy Jackson series out loud to my 6 year old boy. I would like to get him more acquainted with mythology. I have a fairly good background myself, but because English is not my first language, I butcher (in English;)) the names of the creatures (DH corrected me on "cyclops" and "centaur" last night ;) What are your favourite sources for introdusing your child to mythology? Many Thanks.

Dmmetler
I like the Dover books for various myths, folktales, and the like-the ones that are in the "Easy to read" type. They're usually the more innocent stories out of the culture, but a good introduction. I also rented Hercules (the Disney one). Not exactly authentic, but at least gives an idea who the characters are.
Saille
Am I the first first one to say D'Aulaires? D'Aulaires.
MyLittleWonders
You beat me to it! We love D'Aulaires! Also, Aliki has a great book introducing Greek mythology. And Mary Pope Osborne has a pretty good book called Favorite Greek Myths. But, D'Aulaires is by far our favorite.

catz
Am I the first first one to say D'Aulaires? D'Aulaires. :iagree: My son has come back to this book over and over since he was 6! We love it. We got D'Aulaires Norse myths last spring and those were fantastic too.
Vida Winter
Am I the first first one to say D'Aulaires? D'Aulaires. We did this last year (4th grade). I would read a story out loud and dd would draw the picture using pastels. Very enjoyable and the stories stuck with her.
Karen in CO
Greek Mythology, right? Mary Pope Osbourne's early chapter version of the Odyssey is terrific for that age.

mammaofbean
my 5yo dd loves the usborne book of greek mythology, she picks that over the d'aulaires for reading to herself.
Jamee
Am I the first first one to say D'Aulaires? D'Aulaires. This is a great one. Don't know if anyone has kids interested in computer games, but I was really surprised at how much my boys have learned playing Age of Mythology, from Age of Empires. Judging by what they've gotten out of the Percy Jackson books, I think you'll learn a lot from those too.
EmilyK
I agree with all of the above suggestions, but we've reallly enjoyed the Jim Weiss mythology tapes/cds too.
Hannah
Dd's favourite is Atticus the Storyteller on cd. There are two cd's and its also available in book format or as a download.
abbeyej
I'll just back up all the other recommendations for D'Aulaire. For an even easier start, Aliki has a book on the gods of Olympus, and it's appealing for children and well-done as well.
Haiku
I like the books by Geraldine McCaughrean. Unfortunately I am not a big fan of the D'Aulaire book, but theirs is what the National Mythology Exam is based on, and my dd8 wants to take that this year. Mary Pope Osborne also has a good book, and my kids loved her Tales from the Odyssey. Tara
Susie in CA
At that age our favorite was "The Usborne Book of Greek Myths". We have read that book over and over. My now 10-year old son still reads it. Susie
Farrar
Other things are good... but nothing is as good as D'Aulaires.
