Can we compile a list of "readers?"

Loved the old (now out of print) Ginn Basic Readers. You can still find them used at Amazon.com, Abe.com, Powells.com, etc. The best ones are for grades 3-6, and often include wonderful versions of classics, right at the child's reading level, plus folktales and stories from around the world -- and sometimes even excerpts from classic Newberry winners.

Below are the list of titles with grade levels; the readers often have comprehension/discussion questions at the end of a unit; a page listing additional great classic books to look for; plus a wonderful glossary in the back of boldfaced vocabulary words used throughout the book. The enrichment books are collections of stories, with none of the additional resource materials in them. Yes, there are a few hokey old-fashioned "Dick and Jane" style stories, but overall, these are very charming and very nicely written.

Be sure to get books with a copyright between 1950-1968 (older than 1950 or more recent than 1968, the books do not have the classics in them). Scroll down on this website and see pictures of the covers of many of the readers. Enjoy! Warmest regards, Lori D.

I was surprised no one had mentioned the McGuffy readers.

IMO, the Step Into Reading, All Aboard Reading (as well as the Green Light Readers, the Hello Reading Readers, the Ready-to-Read readers, the I Can Read books, the We Both Read books among others...) can all be good resources and all have suggested levels labeled on them, but aren't the same as leveled readers since they don't have a specific progression.

To add to the list, there's also the BOB books and the I See Sam books. Plus, there are leveled Hooked on Phonics readers that come with the program.

Agree. We used tons of these from the library and DSs loved them -- they esp. enjoyed the non-fiction titles.
