CalicoKat
on Christmas day? WDYT? go because you don't want to mess with getting a blood clot. :grouphug:
Lovedtodeath
Well I broke it about 4 days ago! Now you have me scared! The main reason I want to go today is b/c I thought maybe the wait would time be less.
lionfamily1999
You'll have more interesting emergencies to see, that's for sure. The Jerry Springer family gatherings will be moving to the ER after dinner time. Then you have the gifts gone bad people, they'll already be there. At least it will be interesting :p
Lovedtodeath
I called the ER and it could be hours. Then I looked up more info and it appears that treatment is generally the same with the two types of fractures... and I can get the plastic cast thing myself (I used to sell them), so I am not going! I can tell I have at least 4 breaks, so I will be messed up for a while. My main attraction to go is to get DH to understand the seriousness.:glare: But this blood clot thing has me freaked out. What is that all about? I mean, last time I had a metatarsal fracture, they put me in a shoe, no mention of blood clots.
Nestof3
What aboud an urgent care clinic?
Lovedtodeath
They won't do anything... last time they put a temporary cast on it but I had to go to an orthopaedic surgeon for the real treatment the next day. If anything the urgent care clinic made it worse.

Lovedtodeath
I haven't gone anywhere... I keep doing more research. It seems to be getting worse. I will at least get some crutches and a cast today, from my old workplace. DH insists that it will do me no good to go to the ER. My main concern is vascular damage... and I already know I have bad circulation, so... I tend to want to take the alternative route for that, not surgery, I will get the cast and crutches and wait and see.
lionfamily1999
At least make a doc appt for Monday. I know there isn't much they can do with a broken foot, but it could be you need a pin or two to hold the bones in place so they can heal. :grouphug:
Perry
DH insists that it will do me no good to go to the ER. My main concern is vascular damage... and I already know I have bad circulation, so It's true that the ER won't "fix" a fracture, but they would do an xray and look for complications (compromised blood supply, compartment syndrome, etc.). Those things need to be treated urgently, although simple fractures can wait a few days. Fractures are treated differently depending on type and location. You really need an xray to know what's going on. What did you do to it? What makes you think there are 4 fractures? Multiple fractures are much more complicated than a simple fracture. I wouldn't wait any longer.
Lovedtodeath
I can feel where the fractures are. I have 1 on my pinky toe, 1 below my pinky toe and another lower (closer to my ankle) on the 5th metatarsal. I am not sure, but at least one other toe and possibly two have breaks. I feel the sharp fracture pain there, but I can't feel them with my fingers. I would rather take a wait and see approach for practically anything, typically, even after going to the doctor, as I trust natural medicine much more, of course, it can't set broken bones, but I mean for the vascular healing, etc. Surgery is the last thing I want right now. :( The cold feeling is worse when I wrap it too tightly (duh) and I get the pins and needles feeling from putting my foot up. Neither are present at all times. The swelling isn't bad at all. I can still get into my largest pair of shoes, though it hurts my pinky toe to wear them for long. MeanestMomInMidwest
I hope you are able to schedule a doctor apt. Anything that has waited 4 days is not an emergency, and the misuse of emergency room resources is one of my pet peeves.
Perry
Anything that has waited 4 days is not an emergency, and the misuse of emergency room resources is one of my pet peeves. Me too, but I wouldn't call a visit for a fracture misuse. Especially if there are concerns about complications.
Lovedtodeath
Okay, it is Saturday and I waited this long because I didn't think it was that bad and it kept getting worse. The ER was completely empty (not exagerating! I was amazed!). They got me in immediately. Doc took a look and whistled. He said that they may have to numb it up and realign some things, and it is good that I didn't wait until Monday because of that possibility. Got the X-Ray. It is broken clear through, but is lined up. I have a walking boot and crutches with instructions to put all of my weight on it twice a day to keep the ligaments working properly. I have instructions for ice, medications and elevation too, but haven't read them yet. I am so relieved! The cold feeling and numbness is just from my usual bad circulation and not moving my leg... yada yada, not a big deal from my intermittant symptom description. It was worth it to know what I can and can't do without making it worse. Whew!:tongue_smilie: Thank you so much for responding to my thread.:grouphug:

Lovedtodeath
i'm so glad you went. and the news is just about the best you could have asked for! I am relieved, but I do feel foolish, because everything that I was already doing was good enough... I didn't really gain anything from the huge ER bill, except peace of mind, but it is my fault that I couldn't just relax about it. I was crying all morning and called my dad for help when I was driving to pick up some crutches. He said, "Why don't you just come here and I will drive you." Then after we bought them, he took me to the ER. He was driving most of the day. I have the best Dad in the whole world.:001_wub: Edited December 27, 2009 by Lovedtodeath

Yeah, we were all surprised and relieved yet... annoyed that the ER visit did turn out to be for mainly nothing. LOL This shoe that they gave me is helping quite a bit when I need to walk, and they said it was okay to do so. I am also way better emotionally about the whole thing, knowing exactly what I should be/should not be doing and knowing I won't end up with surgery later. You can rest easy knowing you won't lose your foot :p (To rip off GI Joe) now you know, and knowing is half the battle  Besides, sometimes it's hard to believe we're as hurt as we feel (am I overreacting? Is it really that bad?). Having a doctor assure you that you're not crazy or hypersensitive is definitely worth a visit :D

Lovedtodeath
How do you keep breaking your foot, hon? Do you have a bad habit of kicking things or just running into them? :DLOL! Do you know that both one of my good friends and my BIL broke their arm or hand by punching a wall/door/piece of furniture while fighting with their spouse? Actually, both times it was from tripping. I also have pretty severe Vitamin D deficiency.
Lovedtodeath
Okay, it is still broken. I am getting very impatient! I cannot even sleep on my left side because it hurts to bad to have my foot against the bed.
lionfamily1999
Carmen, has it stayed painful or does it come and go?
Jean in Newcastle
Carmen, has it been broken for 2 months? Without any knitting of the bone? That doesn't seem right. (As in something is keeping you from healing). Do you know your human growth hormone levels? I thought I heard that that was very important in healing. lionfamily1999
You did follow the doctor's advice and keep off of it and keep it wrapped (or whatever they told you to do), right?
Lovedtodeath
Oh no, Jean! It is better than it was, but right before breaking it I had an electrodermal scan that indicated my pituitary was pretty much dead and I was prescribed a pituitary supplement. I can't take it if I am nursing, and weaning is very hard with a broken foot, so I was waiting! Agh! Why is everything so stinking hard for me! Julie, the doctor's advice was to wear this shoe and go about walking as normal. I decided after 3 weeks that it wasn't working, so I tried to avoid walking on it for about 5 weeks, and when I started walking more again, I am wearing a surgical boot that supports my foot better than the stupid flimsy thing the ER gave me. mominbc
Have you had a second opinion? I know my dad broke a bone in his hand that would not heal and 6 months later when he saw the bone specialist he said that once he puts the correct cast on it will heal in 6 weeks.:tongue_smilie: 6 weeks later it was healed. I feel so bad for you, it must be so annoying.
Lovedtodeath
If I get a second opinion and the ER did the wrong thing, can I sue them? I know they did something wrong... my pinky toe was broken and they did nothing for it. It now curves out instead of in. I am worried about my future shoe wearing abilities. Mom-ninja.
I agree you should see another Dr. Also, there may be an alternative medicine you can take.
lionfamily1999
Could you see another doctor? It just seems odd that the bones would not have healed yet. Dh said to check the lead levels of your water. I don't know why. When he pops out with stuff like that, I just listen :p
