our 6th grade plans:

 

Science - Sonlight Science 5 (biology)

 

Math - NEM 1 & A Beka's Basic Mathematics

 

History - Sonlight 6 (Finishing up ancients & middle ages)

 

Spanish - Espanol para Ninos y Grandes

 

Geography - focusing on Europe (no specific curriculum; we just fill in maps)

 

Music - beginning piano

 

Grammar - Analytical Grammar, Season 1

 

Logic - Critical Thinking, Book 1

 

Spelling - Sequential Spelling 2

 

Writing - as assigned

 

Reading - tons of it

 

I think that's about it, though I do have a few fun topics that I plan to cover. We're going to do some intentional movie watching--mostly "classics," tho I am also partial to Star Trek reruns. :lurk5:

Our 6th grade plans:

 

Math: McDougall-Littell California Pre-Algebra at charter

Logic: Something secular, don't know yet

Grammar: Analytical Grammar, season 1

Language Arts: Wordly Wise (for spelling, too), Vocabulary from Classical Roots

Writing: IEW B, assignments tied to literature and history

Literature: Lightning Literature 7

History: Don't know... maybe Hakim's History of US as a break from SOTW

Science: Exploration Education and Science Explorer, starting with physics

Art: Artistic Pursuits (hopefully we will have time!)

Music: Piano and drums/percussion

PE: Tennis

This year, Calvin has done:

 

English: Some of SY English 2 and 3, and some of LL7

Maths: Some of SY Maths 3 and LOF Fractions, Decimals and Percents, plus lots of review

Latin: Most of Latin Prep 3 (we have slowed down on this as other things have started to impinge)

Mandarin: graduated second in his class from community Chinese school year five

French: up to chapter six of SY French 1

Science: passed his (high school) IGCSE biology exam with flying colours; started work on geography IGCSE in this slot

History: worked through to the end of the 19th Century using SOTW, then chose to do a Classical Civilisation GCSE course. We are simultaneously filling in on 20th Century history through various materials and he will study it again when he goes to school

Music: graduated from recorder study and moved on to guitar lessons.

Art history/music theory: we've been doing music theory lightly in this slot

Art: Draw Squad, then I allowed him to give up towards the end of the year

RE/Philosophy/Logic: We have been doing Galore Park RE in this slot this year

Memorisation: various poetry

PE: Taekwondo, running, swimming

Extra-curricular: scouts, home educators' book group, chess club

 

Calvin mostly organises his own time these days.

Our 6th grade plans:

 

Math: Systematic Math, last module in level 6, all of level 7

Language Arts:

Grammar: Analytical Grammar (1st season),

Vocab: Vocabulary from classical Roots

Spelling: Spelling Workout (pondering the switch back to Spelling Power)

Writing: Meaningful Composition

Literature: Figuratively Speaking (1 or 2 lessons per week), lots of literature to correspond with different countries being studied in MFW, plus a few progeny press guides

Geography: This year we are taking a break from the history rotation to work through MFW ECC for my 6th, 5th, and 2nd graders, with the geography research projects from the 7/8 supplement for my 6th grader.

Spanish: Elementary Spanish 5/6 (Discovery Streaming)

Latin: Lively Latin

Science: FLVS Science 7

PE: Travel/Club soccer (year round), Physical training at the gym and on the track

Art: FLVS Art (began in June, will finish by the end of Oct.)

Music: MFW, plus guitar

Music: Using the Amy Pak Composers lapbook with Meet the Great Composers, Story of the Orchestra and Lives of the Musicians, continue with piano lessons

 

Reading: books that go with our history studies plus others that he is interested in reading.

Math - Singapore 5B/6A and Daily Math Practice from Evan-Moor (finish grade 5 and start grade 6)

 

Reading - SL Core 4 and Abecedarian level D

 

Writing - not sure. IEW doesn't work well for her although it is great for my other kids.

 

Spelling - Sequential Spelling

 

Grammar - Winston Grammar and proofreading on http://www.spellingconnectionsonline.com

 

History - SL Core 4

 

Science - Prentice Hall Science Explorer

Well, it's good to see that previous schedules are similar to my dd's schedule. I'm still a bit concerned about covering it all. I always seem to be a bit overzealous in my expectations! KWIM!

I just updated my siggy with our schedule for 2009-2010. My rising 6th grader will also be doing Logic Liftoff, Orbiting with Logic, and any other books I can find for her. We'll also be doing Bible reading, and per the suggestions of others on this board, I'll be having her keep a Memory Work page that she'll need to review regularly.

 

PE will be soccer in the fall, probably softball in the spring, or horseback riding lessons.

 

She'll also be doing scouts again (American Heritage Girls).

 

Art usually consists of ceramics classes at the local art center. She takes piano lessons, and I'm going to try The Story of the Orchestra this year as well.

  • Language - Literature based. I teach reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from hand-picked books we read throughout the year.
  • Latin - Minimus: Starting Out in Latin - Student Book and CD. I don't find the teacher's manual helpful.
  • Biology: Real Science-4-Kids Biology I - Lab work with our co-op.
  • Art Apprecition and Music Appreciation: from my co-op's enrichment curriculum (see below)
  • World History: History of the World Vol III: using co-op's enrichment curriculum and worksheets
  • American History: Using several hand-picked books - also frrom my co-op's enrichment curriculum.
  • Other: Piano, Swimming, Cooking, Computer Programming (dad teaches the latter.)
