I have finised my ds schedule for 10th grade and was curious what others looked like.

Here is ours

Algebra 2 eith Saxon or Life of Fred (ds is going to decide which this summer)

Physics (Saxon)

Sonlight 300 for history,geography, literature and maybe writing

if Sonlight writing doesn't work for us I also have Format Writing

Wordly Wise 300 10thgrade level

Analogies 2

PSAT prep book

Guitar lesson and Music Theory (he has done both for several years)

Possible Electives

Drafting

Computer Science

Logic

Electronics (Mr. Circuit 3)

Life Skills ( I design this myself and he does about a 1/2 credit work in it each year this includes things like getting a loan, balancing a check book, doing volunteer work, auto repair, home maintenance etc.)

- Science = 0.5 credit = Anatomy (Prentice-Hall; anatomy section of biology text)

- Logic = 1.0 credit = Practical Logic (DH did his old college text with both DSs)

Worldviews of the Western World II which includes Government, American Government, Composition, Philosophy and Theology

preparing to CLEP Chemistry,

and perhaps the Constitutional Law online class with Michael Farris/ HSLDA.

He is at Teen Pact National Convention now, and will probably want to staff the state event next year. He plays football in the fall, and swims in the winter/spring. He will attend Worldview again this summer. He will coach Upward football in the fall as well as running the sound booth at church. He would also like to prepare for a triathalon.

We are looking into starting College Plus this fall as well... We have alot to sort this summer....

I am going to use Art across the Ages and Museum Masterpieces: The Louvre. I bought them together in one of their combo deals.

 

I have not actually used this before. I had wanted to use it this last yr, but life happened. It was a good decision anyway b/c dd had a full load w/o it.

 

I am looking forward to doing it with her b/c I am art illiterate. :tongue_smilie:

Can someone tell me about Write @ Home or provide a link to a thread? We are also doing A Beka World Literature, are you picking the writing assignments from the questions in that text? If not, where are you getting the assignments?

 

The research librarian at our local library has offered to do a research paper class, even if we are the only ones that come, that is what I'm doing. She is wonderful and got my son and I through his research paper in 12th grade! Not sure if she would be open to coming up with all writing assignments, that is what I need, I have a terrible time coming up with what to tell her (my upcoming 10th grade daughter) to write!

I just thought about something and wonder if I am off my rocker. I actually do not plan on homeschooling our twins for four years of high school.

 

The plan is to homeschool them for the first two years (with some college courses possibly in science for both, music for Dd, computers for Ds) and then after the first two years they attend junior college full time until they earn an associates degree. Then at that time they will graduate high school also. They plan to CLEP/AP exam several of the courses they do at home.

 

But then this is one of the reasons we want to homeschool.

The twins want to get their associates degree by the time they are 18. I don't think they truly know what hard work they will need to do for them to accomplish their high goals. I know they are capable... but are they willing?

He was able to work through a module a week without much trouble, but I am not sure how long it took each day as he works independently. He used the MicroChem kit for experiements and did one every other Friday. I didn't even try to match them up :blushing:

This sounds very do-able. My ds is taking the SAT2 Bio on that same day. We can be "bundle of nerves" sisters. I hope my ds does well. he has had such a terrible teenage boy year and I just am having trouble recognizing this kid anymore. OY!!!

Henle- we'll just be starting after LC I & II, which ds loves. My intimidation factor is through the roof. We can do it, can't we?? Kareni, Jean and others- you are my inspiration!!

An IEW theme book -(either Ancient or U.S. depending on if we go with Omni 3 or 4 in the fall).

Windows to the world- lit analysis

I think you have the better deal with math, both of my kids do better with geometry, but that is only one year, and the rest are algebra :) Have your daughter email Dana Mosely whenever she needs help, he writes back fairly quickly, and doesn't give the entire answer at once, he gives the next step or two to see if they can figure out the rest. You can get his cell number as well to talk to him. That year was pretty much between my son and Dana Mosely. I just figured the assignments and graded tests.

 

It looks like you are already good at writing....I jotted down your book, how would it be for me. I struggle with what to tell them to write about, grading their papers, etc. I will look at it at Barnes and Noble and appreciate the recommendation. You wouldn't happen to know of a vocabulary and/or spelling text that is non traditional like the writing book?

We do not do spelling. We don't really have time anymore.

 

We spent gobs of time learning biology vocabulary. If you are taking biology, you will get plenty of vocabulary through that subject.

 

If you feel you must cover spelling, I'd use words from your literature or history course. (you could take vocab from these sources, too)

PS-If you do BJU writing & grammar, I would not add the writers workshop book unless you plan on just doing a portion of it. Otherwise, that will be a lot of writing.:D

Dd #2 will be in 10th grade this coming year. This is what we have planned for her:

 

Math - She's going to do LoF Advanced Algebra. She also requested LoF Geometry, even though she did Jacobs' this year. She says she feels like she needs to go over it again (I think she just likes geometry).

 

Science - She's taking Apologia Chem in a class, with a teacher that adds to it a bit, explains it, etc. We did the first few modules at home this year, but she got stuck on module 5 and I wasn't feeling all that great, so we switched to Marine Bio for the remainder of her 9th grade year.

 

Latin - Cambridge 2 & 3. We're done with Henle (completed Units 1-7, and it took f-o-r-e-v-e-r). Still, I'm glad we did it. She's only doing the Cambridge for fun, really. We have no lofty goals, it just seems a waste to have spent so much time and not continue with something.

 

Spanish - We still haven't gotten to this, at all. I'm not sure, but maybe a combo of RS & Breaking the Barrier. Undecided, but we need to do something.

 

Writing - IEW class. Hallelujah! I am not equipped.

 

History, Literature, etc. - Sonlight 300. I'll tweak this as necessary, and I know I have a TON of books I want to read with her. We'll just have to see how much time we have. We're looking forward to doing SL, after a torturous year w/TOG.

 

U.S. Government - outside class at our co-op.

Hi Susan, Write @ Home offers comp classes in either full year, 1 semester or workshop versions. The child has a one on one writing coach who gives the assignments and the critques them for re-write. Every piece of writing has a first draft and 2 revisions. I really love that. I usem the 1 semester comp courses because I like to give my own assignments too.

I also like my kids to do the offered workshops either during the summer or after completing the semester course. My kids have used Comp 1, 2, The Short Story w/s, the Essay w/s and the research paper w/s. I was basically pleased with all of the classes. It took the pressure off me to teach that as writing can get a bit personal...kwim?

 

Anyway....as far as A Beka Lit...I have my children pick ONE assignment from the suggested ones and one is due each 2 weeks. I expect a first draft on the first Friday...a revised copy by the following Wed. and a polished copy by the Monday after which gives them the weekend to polish if they need it.

 

We use the A Beka Handbook and a myriad of other english handbooks for instructions on the different type of writing.

 

My dd's loved their A Beka Lit books so much, I had to buy new copies because they wouldn't give them back. They are beautiful books and they do get the job done. I go a little overboard in the English dept. BUT my kids become very competent writers by the time they reach college.

Just to make sure I understand what writing assignments you pick, is it the composition suggestions that appear at the end of some selections? Do you grade these yourself or get someone else to do it. And yes, my kids would rather me not read their writing at all, and to have me correct it, well......
