  1. Good reminder. I logged on to this site after HS Convention and was quite interested--especially in Science programs. Would love hear some feedback from those who have purchased.
  2. Northwoods series. Republished by veritas Press. Saw them posted for sale on the board.
  3. Yes, my son did this last summer. He really enjoyed Andrew Pudewa and learned some helpful hints for SAT writing. Although we went on to do more SAT prep, he did glean some good info.
  4. We are looking forward to the new Legoland that will be built here in Winter Haven, FL. Should be ready Fall 2011.
  5. Thanks for long reply. You validated my thoughts for this year. Aleks to fill in gaps and keep them on task combined with a program to make them think (word problems, etc.) 5th grade, Singapore 8th grade, LOF PreAlgebra with Biology (even though dd wants to do Algebra...)
  6. We are doing Analytical Grammar also for son's 10th grade year. Although it suggests 10 weeks, we will work on it most of the year since we've taken 2 years off of formal grammar study.
  7. 5 Paths to the Love of your Life When God Writes Your Love Story/ by Ludy
  8. We did WVWW I last year but thought we had decided to do a more "traditional"course of study this year involving Gov't and AP English. However, once we studied the options at the Florida Convention, we discovered that WVWW 2 would definitely satisfy that gov't credit as well as satisfy my desire to teach government from a very foundational/principled approach. The family we do this class with also has a politically minded son (as mine is) and we were determined to provide the boys with a solid foundation. We are sticking with WVWW--which came as a surprise to us!
  9. My son is also interested in political science and I wanted to give him a strong foundation, not just get the credit. After spending a day at the convention in Orlando last weekend studying curriculums, we decided on Worldviews of the Western World II. We had just completed WVWW I and had not considered II since we felt we needed to move on to other things. Lo and behold, WVWW II is alot of government, in a foundational way. If we find we need to supplement with a traditional text for the "functional" way government works, we can. Our son is involved with Teen Pact which also has really sparked his poli sci interests.
  10. My son will be doing: Worldviews of the Western World II which includes Government, American Government, Composition, Philosophy and Theology Advanced Math/Saxon, IEW Advanced Communication, Latin/Ecce Romani 2, preparing to CLEP Chemistry, and perhaps the Constitutional Law online class with Michael Farris/ HSLDA. He is at Teen Pact National Convention now, and will probably want to staff the state event next year. He plays football in the fall, and swims in the winter/spring. He will attend Worldview again this summer. He will coach Upward football in the fall as well as running the sound booth at church. He would also like to prepare for a triathalon. We are looking into starting College Plus this fall as well... We have alot to sort this summer....
  11. We did General Science in 7th grade with my ds, then he had an opportunity to do Biology in 8th grade with a friend/labs. Now we're in Chemistry, next year Physics. He hasn't skipped a beat.
  12. I'm looking for recommendations for my homeschool group tomorrow. We want to watch a movie and critique it as we look at assumptions the director has made. We are working through "Demolishing Strongholds," a video curriculum with Ken Ham (Answers in Genesis) and Bill Jack (Worldview Academy.) I'm not a movie person anyway, so nothing is coming to mind. I would like to to be fun (it is a "party" day), but nothing too objectionable as we have guys and girls aged 12-16. You all are the best! What a find this board has been. Thank you!
  13. We go to the library website and download audio books for free. They expire in 2 weeks, but we can renew. I would like to record my own stuff and download it to MP3--I think its pretty simple, I just haven't done it yet.
  14. My kids watch it on a station here in central Fl. Qubo. Don't know what that means, but its programming is so much better than the network stations.
  15. How would this compare to Potter's School or Veritas Press Scholars Online? So many options....I spoke with King's Way last year. I think that they formerly were called Classical Free Online while they were getting up and starting.
  16. Someone just listed a Spelling Power book for sale on this board. This is a pricey book (about $65 new) so the $17 they are asking is a great deal!
  17. Yahoo groups has an IEW group. Jill is the moderator and will walk you through all of those questions. I would recommend popping over there.
  18. We have Safe Eyes that we purchased through the Focus on the Family website for a discount. It seems like it was about $40. Each family member can log in with his own account, and each account can be set up differently. I receive text messages on my cell if someone is on the internet--very helpful when I'm away from home. Every once in a while, I "try" to get on questionable sites just to make sure its working and doing its job. I am very pleased.
  19. I love garage sales! I am actually a bit put off by people who put too much time and energy into organizing their junk. Get up early on a Saturday and put it all out on the driveway. Put up some signs around the neighborhood and do the "price sheet" on a piece of cardboard. People always like to rummage through your stuff and feel like they are getting a deal. Close shop at 10:30 or so, bag up the leftovers and take it to Goodwill. If it didn't sell the first day, its unlikely to sell the next day.
  20. You will just need a certified teacher evaluate your children and check the box on the form that says they have progressed from last year. If you can join a homeschool support group in your area, you will likely find several homeschool moms/certified teachers that will do this for a small fee. From what I understand, they do not have to reach any pre-determined level, just show progression. We choose to have standardized tests done every year and check that box as our accountability.
  21. I love Spelling Power. The book contains all words for students at all levels. The author details how to find which level your child is on. From there, you spend 15 minutes a day on spelling. The first five minutes you dictate the words. The next 5 minutes he works through a 10 step process to learn the words he missed. The next 5 minutes he chooses a game or excercise involving the words he missed. The next day, you test him on the words he missed, and then keep moving on. The key is testing him to find the level he is at. This has worked well for us because we don't spend time working on words he already knows.
  22. She did Apologia General Science last year. I understand Physical Science requires a solid math background. Since she will start pre-algebra, I thought Physical Science wasn't an option. The rest of the group is doing Biology, but I am a bit concerned that it will weigh her down. We had purchased Sonlight Core 3+4 for this year, but only made it through the first half. Since this Core is more for younger students, I thought if I added reading from History of US to tie it all together, it would be sufficient. The living books would be the reading list from the second half of Sonlight Core 3+4.
