  1. Our church only sends teens domestically on mission or service trips. We're low income ourselves so it's been funny a couple of times when my girls have returned home after working with stories of the reactions of more affluent teens. I hope through service my daughters become broken-hearted over people suffering regardless of where those people live and committed to serving Jesus by making a difference. I've seen them grow spiritually through the trips. I also have to agree that the marketing by some of these companies makes me uncomfortable. Mission trips shouldn't be vacations nor should they be insensitive to those being helped.
  2. Is it ever acceptable to use phrases such as "I will prove" or "I will explain" in literary essays? I was taught these were not appropriate, but recently a teacher of an online highschool English class said otherwise to my daughter. My college days were a long time ago, so help me please!
  3. If you did, indeed, mean geography, I would cut back on the lessons and focus on math. In my opinion, geography can be taught faster than math for a child that struggles with math.
  4. Did you mean geometry instead of geography? If geometry, could you teach algebra and geometry in an integrated fashion? For my younger daughter, we will be reviewing algebra next year as she's studying geometry. She's very intelligent, but struggles with math. Originally, we had thought of algebra 1 followed by algebra 2 to avoid the loss of skills. But she's concerned about algebra 2. Rather than stress her, she and I decided together to continue algebra 1 integrated into geometry.
  5. Don't give if you don't think the trip and teen deserves your support. You seem angry that she couldn't or wouldn't help babysit for you. Is it not possible that she really couldn't? I don't see that she's taking advantage of you. She's asking for a donation and you're saying no. That's all. I say no to wonderful charities all the time because I've already chosen those that will get my money. I tend to question "mission" trips for teens, but I also know these trips have changed the lives of some teens for the better. Our youth group earns most of the money for trips, but not all. The other portion comes from church members.
  6. Wow! Fantastic! :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: Congratulations to your daughter and prayers for her health.
  7. My 18 yo and I would move in a heartbeat, but my 15 yo needs stability. It's very, very important to her. So, for me now, I would not move out of our area without a compelling reason. We will have to move to a different apartment complex either this year or next to try to reduce our expenses. Even that type of move is stressful for my 15 yo.
  8. My math skills are okay, but rusty so I outsource algebra 2 and up. My undergraduate degree is in microbiology. I can teach most science programs. Even though I had several years of French in college (a long time ago), I tried but just couldn't teach my older daughter French. My younger daughter is interested in Japanese; I definitely can't teach that! I outsource those classes that I either know I can't teach (Japanese) or would take too much review time on my part.
  9. That's great! It's exciting to watch a child overcome limitations. My older daughter is dyslexic. The first time she read a book of her own for fun, I cried. She reads voraciously now.
  10. This was so true for me! After I broke my right wrist, It took weeks before I began to feel normal. Thankfully, I had a great boss and co-workers who let me slide a bit at times at work and great daughters at home. I wish my doctor had been more upfront about the fatigue because I did worry about underlying problems, OP, I'm so sorry you broke your leg! Rest as much as you can and don't hestitate to ask for help when you need it. Time will do the rest.
  11. Great news! Congratulations to your daughter!!!
  12. I'm so sorry for your loss. Praying for your family.
  13. Me too! I'm amazed at how much I'm learning from the hive! My younger daughter loves everything Japanese. Now if we ever get to visit there, I'll know to where not to go!
  14. Alleluia!! He is risen indeed!
  15. What a beautiful tribute to your dad! He must have been a very special man. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  16. In high school, I caught my long hair on fire in a chemistry lab!! Thankfully, I wasn't hurt, but it definately taught me a lesson about safety in the lab. I loved doing labs with my daughters at home until high school. It got so expensive that dual credit (free for us) and Landry intensives make more sense. We still do the simpler ones at home, as much for me as for my girls.
  17. Wow! Congratulations! :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:
  18. I'm so sorry! Chocolate is definately indicated!

  20. We're doing a combination of some labs at home, community college and Landry Academy intensives. My daughters completed the biology intensive and loved it. This summer my younger daughter will be doing the chemistry intensive. My older daughter took chemistry as a dual credit student. edited: spelling
  21. Praying for you and your family! I"m so sorry you're experiencing this. If he hasn't always been this way, I would have a doctor give him a throrough evaluation.
