  1. I'm not a diver, but I regularly do a curb crawl through the apartment area of my town. When my 12th grader was 6-8 y.o, he had fleet of naybe 10 Mattel Power Wheels that were curb finds. Almost all of these $400 electric rides just needed a $30 battery. As for me, there is artwork and furniture from curb finds around the house.
  2. No matter how dressed up a young teen boy gets, a clean pair of tennis shoes is perfectly. It is a very "preppy" look.
  3. You can take the same course taught at PA homeschool, by taking it self paced and auto grading at https://www.physics-prep.com/ It Kernion's site. No office hours, but a lot cheaper and again self paced. I really wanted to use it with my 12th grader, but he was so used to Thinkwell that he did not want to switch. For a companion book, use AP Physic C, Dan Fullerton. Unfortunately it only covers mechanics. BTW, for whatever reason TW doesn't seem popular on this forum, my kid had excellent results with it using it for all AP math and sciences.
  4. Thanks all for input. From what I gathered, London might be better regarded than its parent , NE. The econ/business department is strong, not London Sc Econ strong, but still very solid. The STEM areas are also very strong. Anyway, by son nixed any possibility of attending or even doing a post admit visit. I am starting to suspect that the application was not a a total accident. He and his GF applied to roughly the same schools. I think the realization is starting to sink in that they won't be going to the same college. Miight not even be on the same coast. But being overseas is too much for him to contemplate. The summer is going to be rough around here. The school seems ideal for a U.S. student looking to eventually move to and work in Europe.
  5. This might be true in the homeschool world, but is certainly not the case in So Cal public or private schools. UC Irvine and UCLA tend to be the targets, for some groups because of the price and their kids stay local. Those kids typically just take AP Chem, AP Calc ab, and APUSH. Everybody aiming for Berkeley, UC San Diego and even more selective schools have 8-12 APs under their belt, including BC and physics c.
  6. My senior is only applying to New England schools (+1 west coast). He got into one of his top 3 via EA, still waiting on RD for the other 2. He also applied EA to what I thought was Northeastern as his new england safety. Turns out he actually applied and was accepted to Northeastern U. London, the actual university--not a satellite campus, or year abroad type thing. Everything, I read about it is very exciting. My hesitatancy, if he wanted to go that way, is that I cannot find anything on rankings, and outcomes. He will probably travel alone to new admittee day. Anybody here know anything about it? Apparently it is a big deal for England to grant a "University" designation. https://news.northeastern.edu/2022/07/20/uk-university-title/ thanks.
  7. My 12th grader took psat 8/9 in fifth and the SAT in 6th and 7th. His weakest area was reading. and remained so through hs final SAT. We focused test prep primarily on reading. We worked together on reading passages from past official SAT tests, and 2-3 year old SAT test prep books (cheap). In scoring his practice tests, I did not just rely on the answer grid. I read every question and answer options. Over time, I developed a feel of the type of questions that would give him difficulty, and the trap that would get him. The reading test are test traps. For example the historical passages are based on real documents/literature, but rewritten to be more difficullt. His biggest problem was that he would anticipate the answer or use his outside knowledge in answering question. It was a struggle to get him to read the passage if it was topic that he knew something about, and to understand that if the passage said whales have mouths, the wrong answer was the one having baleen in it. This is how we did it. BTW, will he using the old SAT or NEW SAT for college apps? Test prep might be different using the NEW SAT.
  8. I've avoided watching it. George Floyd was hard enough for me to stomach
  9. We live less than 30 miles away from USC and didn't apply. No UC apps either. Only new england schools with just one west coaster.
  10. Before I spent time in Asia, I would stir the scum back into the broth. Then I saw asian home chefs constantly removing the scum. I think they told me it was to remove acids and bitters. I started skimming too. I am not sure about a flavor difference, but, I do like the clarity of the broth. I am so use to skimming now, that I probably wouldn't eat if I saw someone stirring the foam back in.
  11. It is commendable that he is able save nearly all.of his earnings. But., nobody would be surprised if a typical h.s. kid did not have any savings from $200/wk after usual expenses. My kid would spend $25 gas, 75 starbucks and lunch, and 100 for the weekend on himself and. G.f.. zero savings without any unreasonable expenses.
  12. Any reason why some of savings cannot go into a piggy bank instead of an account? Just saying.
  13. Some legitimate jobs have a scammy side to them. My first so called job after graduating H.S. was with an international company to do outside sales of home fire alarms. Back then, residential alarms were not well known. I underwent three weeks of sales training along with 40 other H.S. grads. We trained on the product and the spiel. These alarms were $200 each, at a time when new VWs were around $2500. About the second week of training, they started telling of how our first sales presentations were to be to our relatives, and one of the trainers would go along to coach us. Then every day they became more demanding about us setting up these family presentations. It then became that we could not get our sales kits until we gave them our family lists. At that the point, I, and several others, realized that the scam was to use us to sale these way over priced fire detectors to our relatives. All who refused to divulge the list were fired.
  14. Pay for a 90 minute walking tour of the French Quarters and/or Garden District by a licensed guide. $10-20 per person, very nformative, and well worth it. If you plan to eat at one of the well known restaurants, reserve before you leave. Keep in mind most of the fancy places are closed on Sunday and Monday. On the cheap side of eats, look for the Yakamein Lady's pop-up. Yakamein is a very local type of soup. Crawfish from the "Blue Market". the market is an absolute dump, in the 13th Ward, but it has a hot food counter with with incredibly good food and cheap prices. Boiled crawfish maybe $3/lb. Pllan on 3-5 lbs per person. Last thing, tourist buy beads. Sports earn them.
  15. I am able to save $600-800 for my son's birthday gift by dropping all coin change into a large vase. I give him whatever is in in it. I figure 2- 3 dollars go into it every day.
  16. I wish he was done, but he is wrapping up rd apps to two other schools. All offer something uniquely special for his planned major.
  17. Yes, and thanks to all. I learned so much here.
  18. I can now say khakis and polos are OK for M I T.
  19. Back in the old days, I, ugh , I mean my friend, transferred from a cc to a top 20 school with a 550V, and then I, ugh I mean my friend, went to a top 5 professional program.
  20. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/11/what-does-an-sat-score-mean-in-a-test-optional-world.html Something to consider if still deciding whether to submit test scores.
  21. I don't think mine will go along with recording. 12/17/2022, 12:17 pm ET
  22. Before taking AP computer science, mine took this free class at edx: Introduction to Java Programming (part 1). He said he was well prepared for the class and and ap exam. the class is first of three. The next class focuses on ap prep, and third class is oriented to employment.
  23. Having been involved with 30+ applications to UCs, i suggest that he is a very weak candidate for any UC campus if he stops now. At the very minimum precal, but calc ab is the norm.
  24. Kitchenambition.com has recommendations for knife sets dor cooking school students. Might hive you some ideas
