  1. The "Blue Market in New Orlean's 7th ward. The place is way past dive, it's a dump. But, they have the best crawfish boil. Taking the 12th grader back for his h.s. graduation gift next month.
  2. So have you proud parents started shopping for swag and rep gear. I purchased his T-shirt at the coop. I've gotten other things (new and used) off ebay and poshmark at way better prices.
  3. He went to the 11th hour before committing to MIT. I am happy with his choice. The west coast east coast exchange will do him good.
  4. We are at 2600 for two adults, and one teen on his way to college. Two bedrooms and one bath are unused. The living room and dining room are furnished but have not been used for their purpose in 15 years. All our living and entertaining is in a large kitchen/family room.
  5. Not yet. He is going to new admit day in Northern Cal tomorrow. It seem to be between this school and MIT. However, there is a long shot in Philly still in the race. Cornell-Dyson was turned down. I am letting him make the decision. Or, i am trying to. . Each has its unique advantage for his goals. A GF heading to Berkeley is a factor.
  6. Never heard of Eli's, It seems like a place I would have enjoyed. At the time, I was doing I three years at Cal. I lived across from Lake Merritt, but spent all my free time in S.F. I knew S.F. very well because I commuted there from L.A. for 5 years before quitting to change professions. Back then I was more North Beach, and Marina district.
  7. For all of those who missed the opportunity to attend our upcoming event this Spring you will get another chance in August! STAY TUNED and pass the word! I ate at Flint's at least once a month during the late 80s. Can't say I had the nerve to eat on the curb late at night, though. I will never forget the overwhelming smell of the smoke coming out of that place. Could smell it from a block away. A four meat dinner would feed the then two of us for two days.
  8. I was looking up things to do in Bay area to keep me busy if I decide to drive my kid up to new admit day, instead of flying him. It is the last of three schools he is visiting. To my great surprise, I discovered that family members of the original owner is trying to bring back Flint's. They are having trouble finding suitable and affordable space. In the meantime, they have been holding pop-up events. The next one is set for April 30th, but tickets were sold out weeks ago. I will be checking the site regularly. I will definitely be at the next pop up. https://www.kqed.org/arts/13927417/flints-bbq-spring-pop-up-2023-berkeley
  9. Seems your son is in a cycle of low performance (however, he, you measure success), and high anxiety. One question is how much support are you giving him. Around, every kid who is playing at a high level in any sport, has more coaching than just the H.S. team coach. Waking up and running a 10k before breakfast might give him conditioning, but it is doing little for overall performance. Private or semi-private coaching may be something to consider. https://www.active.com/running/articles/7-reasons-why-you-need-a-running-coach/slide-7
  10. This reminds me of when I was in court many years ago. The defendant asked the judge how he would feel if someone called him a black mf'er. The judge hemmed and hawed and said that that is very unlikely that someone would call him.that because he is white. The defendant then asked the judge what if somebody called him the type of mf'er that he is.
  11. I've never been in a thrift store that did not have at least one pair of these. They are built like tanks.
  12. Hi Harriet, thank you for your psa I have a 12th grader. We always did a basket and an egg hunt intil last year. Last year, it was just a small basket, and this year I thought I would drop the Easter Bunny stuff all together. . I read your pda and thought well maybe one more year. I went to the bank yesterday for a bunch of $5, and stuffed them Into plastic eggs. He had a blast when he found them and started counting the loot. PRICELESS
  13. To increase speed, all practice sections need to be timed. Instead of doing a whole test in a sitting, tear out one section of the practice section at a time. Have him do one section at a time. At the time limit score what was done, then have him finish the rest of the section of untimed. then score that completed section. Do each section this way to identify the section(s) need the most work. It is lot less intimidating to break up the test.
  14. Now, that we have wrapped up college admission, I had a chance to reflect on our experience. In our case, our local school public district is competent. the schools win state recognition for academic. One or two top H.S. school grads go to highly selective colleges. But grade levels at the public H.S. have 1000+ students. It was not possible to homeschool-- no stay at homes. We went private because our goal, from kindergarten, was a top ten university. The top private schools in our area send 30% to top 20 colleges, and maybe 15-20% to top 10 colleges. To get into the pipeline for the private high schools requires getting in the system at K, or the other entry point of 6th or 7th grade. The school we ending going to is 45 minutes away from home. Believe me it is an ordeal to get there and back. It is way more than just going for classes. There is also driving for after school stuff, weekend activities, athletic matches, parent meeting, play dates, and birthday parties. Why did we do it? It was because of everything else the school offered. Tuition covers more than teacher salaries. Tuition covers all sports imaginable sports, with uniforms, full- time coaches, with assistant coaches and trainers. Art classes with ample supplies for every student, Classroom size is no more than 20 students. All teachers have a full time classroom assistant. Almost all teachers have at least a masters in their subject. Then, there clubs for everything. If a few students come up with a new club, the new club is mentored and funded. My kid's has been on a team building a car for a competition. The school gave his club $75K. Not to mention the field trips, and week long bonding excursions. My kid experienced so much more than I could possibly have given him even If I were able to homeschool him. The downside for us was that I had to afterschool math from K. His school used Chicago Math, a very private school thing. I bought old standard text books and we used these after school. Again, the choice is so family specific. In our case, it was absolutely worth it.
  15. I've helped several struggling students with this strategy. Go to their class, read the assigned class reading, then watch Aplus Physics videos (free), Physics Prep ($150), the core material for PAH), or Thinkwell ($150). Do the online homework, homework, assignments, then do their class homework. Remember, the online materials can be reviewed over and over until he gets it, and nothing stops you from getting a chapter ahead of actual class..
  16. You can begin driving practice now. Start in an empty parking lots, down quiet streets, then into light traffic. Most kids around here have about 20 hours with their parents before starting driving school. Think of driving school as finishing school. After the last lesson, most will take the kid to the DMV for driving test.
  17. I grew up in that area around the same time. Did you go to the one on Chrenshaw? The sushi in the bowling alley was the best.

Around here, the terms are interchangeable. Family law just seems a nicer way of saying it.
  19. I don't have the responsibilities you have, but I got the DMV test book, and started driving practice, so that he could be mobile the first day legally possible. Seems you need to step up your support. Even if it takes a year, he can start driving at 17.
  20. He went 4 for 5. Harvard reject. Final decision is his to make.
  21. To all waiting for April 1st, there as been an update: The Office of Undergraduate Admission will release decisions to Regular Decision and deferred applicants on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 4 p.m. (Pacific Time).
  22. You tube has several Dr. Arthur Benjamin, aka the Mathemagician , videos;
