  1. Maybe it's time to try and find a new circle of friends that you have more in common with. That doesn't mean that you can't keep your old friends but maybe some new blood in your social circles would be a good thing. There seems to be plenty of meetup groups for various views, things you have in common. I've tried a couple of meetup groups, I'm still trying to find one that is a good fit. Good luck.
  2. I going to admit to the unpopular choice of - I do NOT shop for Christmas. I do not like shopping at the best of times. So I give my children money to buy whatever they want. They get $10 for each year they are old. Last year they decided to donate their Christmas money to various charities. I asked them the other day what they wanted for Christmas and all they could come up with was homemade fruit cake. So I'll be making those later this week since they improve with age. :D I like spending time together, I think doing crafts, I like cooking, I like playing games. I just don't like the shopping for things.
  3. Yes, the dogs are allowed on the couch. We have a 25 lb Cocker mix and a 55 lb Standard Poodle. We have a futon couch, so we periodically take the couch cover off and wash it or switch it out for another cover. We have three covers that we rotate between. The dogs are also allowed on the bed and we have a coverlet that we switch out and wash once a week.
  4. My son decided to be a vegetarian at age 8. His older brother and myself decided to join him with a vegetarian life style. Four years later and we are all sticking with it. My husband and youngest son still eat meat (rarely). They are happy to eat vegetarian 99% of the time. Vegan does not mean expensive or difficult. Plus, your DD is certainly old enough to help fix meals.
  5. I'm in the same boat. I went to bed at 11 p.m. and tossed and turned for hours, maybe slept a couple of hours in there somewhere, and then got up at 6 a.m. because I was just laying there wide awake. The other week I tried taking the Unisom Quick Melts sleep aides and they didn't help that much. :glare: Not only do I lay there wide awake but I'm HOT. I have the window open and my big super sized fan pointing at me. My body is tired but my mind won't shut up. I'm not sure if this is part of perimenopause or whether I just have too much on my mind.
  6. Earth Science by Tarbuck is a high school level text. My son is using it this year and likes the book a lot.
  7. I think you have to put it down to lesson learned. Next time ask what the costs are going to be. If you are on a budget, you need to be up front and just let the vet know that you are not willing to spend more than XXX on a goat. When I go to the vet I always ask the price of stuff. Some stuff I know, office visit $50, worm check $20, heartworm test $25, x-ray $70 or so. When I took my dog last month the vet was up front with additional costs of tests that she recommended. I pretty much figure that most vet bills are going to be a minimum of $200.
  8. Some of our favorites are: Food Channel History Channel National Geographic Channel Animal Planet Science Channel Plus the kids like the cartoon channels.
  9. I'd pack the roasted garlic in olive oil and use it in various recipes. It'll keep for a few days in the oil. Add to mashed potatoes, add to sauces, etc...
  10. Was another car damaged in the accident? If not - I probably wouldn't turn it into the insurance at all. Depending on the kind of car, a 10 year old car can't be worth that much and your insurance will go sky high.
  11. No life insurance here, he doesn't qualify since he is diabetic. I'd have to survive on SS and savings.
  12. We start school in August and finish at the end of May. We don't have any planned time off, we just take off when we want.
  13. Last year I took my 3 boys to Florida for 3 weeks. We did a cruise and all the Disney World parks and fun stuff. They all did really well even the, then, 6 year old.
  14. Dogs are like kids: They always wake you up when you want to sleep in. They always get sick after hours. :glare: They don't have good hygiene and kind of smell. :001_smile: They whine at you when they are hungry. They make a huge mess when taking a bath. They never cooperate when you are running late. They always cost more money than you think they will. They are good at looking cute so you'll give them a cookie. If they can get dirty they will, muddy puddles are fun.
  15. Mine just hang out (10 year old Cocker Spaniel mix and a 3 year old Standard Poodle). I'm pretty sure they bark at things outside, sleep on the bed (because they mess up the covers) but mostly they sleep on the couch. They don't get into anything and don't have accidents. They are almost perfect. :D
  16. I answered other. I pay a lot of the bills and handle investments. Hubby enters all the receipts and balances the various accounts.
  17. I would NOT recommend a Maytag. We had one of their fridges and it broke while under warranty and it took them 5 wks to fix it and that was only because WE went out and purchased one of the parts needed that they said would be out of stock for several months. I will NEVER EVER have anything to do with Maytag again (remember that they make a lot of other brands, such as JennAire, Amana, Whirlpool and a couple of others I believe). I have a lovely Kenmore top of the line dish washer that is broken and has been broken now for a couple of years - makes a fantastic rack for drying all the stuff we hand wash. The only thing I am happy with is my Frigidaire fridge/freezer. I would buy that brand again. Plus, I still have my 30 or 40 year old stove because I they don't make like that anymore. So even though it is ugly and old - it works and is easily fixed by us if something breaks. I recommend reading reviews and taking out an extended warranty.
  18. My son does 1/2 a lesson of Advanced Mathematics 4 times per week. He did the first half of the book last year (9th grade) and will finish it up this year (10th grade). It takes him about an hour to do 1/2 a lesson.
  19. I love that show. It is very entertaining. I'd really like to see a few of them from the Glee Project on the actual show "Glee".
  20. I just use a calling card when I need to make a long distance or toll call. I get the card from http://www.callingcards.com So I use the card a lot to call my folks in the UK for 3 cents per minute plus any long distance or toll calls here in the states.
  21. Here's another vote for a Cuisinart. We only have one bowl but we only have ice-cream once in a while so it works for us.
  22. A full school day means 6 hours for work for my 10th grader and 6th grader. I do school from 10 until 5 pm. With an hour for lunch and we usually watch something educational while we eat. I also have a 2nd grader that does work on and off throughout the day. I am involved in most of those hours. Probably 5 of the 6 hours because I have to squeeze in doing dishes and fixing lunch and snacks. The older two are also required to read for a couple of hours each night by themselves. I try to rotate between the kids. My oldest is most definitely the most independent of the 3 kids. We will be doing philosophy together, even if that means adding an additional hour to our school day, because half the fun is the discussions and you a least two people doing the class. Throughout the day I am working with one or a couple of the kids at a time.
  23. I think you are worrying way too much about it. Just let it go and move on.
  24. There are lots of food that I can't resist - chips, cookies, ice-cream, and candy. For me, I just don't buy those things and keep them at the house. Plus, it is easier to have none than it is to have one. I made cookies yesterday and haven't even tasted one.
