  1. Maybe this will help with the exponents problem. My daughter is a sophomore in college. We did Saxon through Calculus. She was my my literature/art/logic kid. Hated math and struggled. At the beginning of every lesson, before you start the lesson, have her write the exponent rules. There are not many so this will only take a few minutes. And my literature kid who wrote a novel at 15 and won awards for her vocal and piano performances -- she is majoring in math. She fell in love with math doing calculus. Good luck. Hope this helps.
  2. Here is a picture of my family and me in 2014. I know it is old. But it is one of the few I have of all of us. It was before my son passed away. At the time I was only homeschooling the youngest and she has since graduated. Will take this down soon.
  3. It is an objective complement. child and Tom are the same person.
  4. Well, I schooled 4 through high school. All made it into college just fine, two actually got full scholarships, and no one did chemistry until high school. One of my four didn't do chemistry until college. She still did fine.
  5. I wish she had. She spent the whole time just giving answers to the tests she wrote. I am she would actually tell the whole class the answer when anyone said they did not understand. And on non test days she could not control the unruly class. It was really bad.
  6. And I do think expertise is important, but I will tell you the worst teacher I ever had was my French teacher. She was French, grew up in France, but just could not teach. The class was a nightmare and I learned nothing. So while expertise is very important, you also need to know how to convey the information, actually teach.
  7. Praying for you and your family Melissa.
  8. Statistics is another option. But I also have a child that while did ok with math, did not like it. Until Calculus (and we did Saxon all the way even the Calculus). She is now a math major.
  9. Praying for you Dawn, for clarity of thought and peace.
  10. What is the difference in the phrase "multiply by a factor of 1.75" and "increase by a factor of 1.75"? Are they the same? Please explain your answers. We are having an interesting discussion at our house. I also posted this on the high school board. Hoping others will see it here and chime in.

  12. Here are a few things I have finished lately. The pink set is a gift for a friend's first grandchild, the afghan has taken 18 months and is for my youngest daughter, the sweater is for my grandson.
  13. I agree. And this is what my 18 year old daughter replied to a teacher when told she had to get up and talk about the ethnicity of her family. I was so proud of her!
  14. So I did Grade 9: Algebra 2 with geometry Grade 10: Advanced Math (pre-calculus with trigonometry) Grade 11: here we did part of the Calculus book and part of a statistics book so I named it math topics in Calculus and statistics Grdae 12 : Calculus Hope this helps some.
  15. Tell her to go to her professor. And lots of kids fail or nearly fail that first test. Sometimes it is just learning to study for that professors test. Have her look at the test and determine where the problems are. What class is this in?
  16. And my 2 year old granddaughter changed her baby brother's diapers. Of course mom was right there in the kitchen doing something when gd decided gs needed to be changed. He was on the floor, so she did it. And when mom looked up she was almost done. But if you knew my granddaughter this really wouldn't surprise you. It takes 3 of us to keep eyes on her at all times. And she is very determined. This is not something we let her do or want her to do, but it happens.
  17. Just wanted to encourage those who use Saxon. I have used it through Calculus 3 times. My youngest is majoring in math and is in the honors program. Her professor this year was impressed with her math knowledge and said she asked very good questions and must have been taught well.
  18. So I voted we almost always had a daily meal together, but my dad may or may not have been with us. He was military and sometimes he was on assignments without us. But everyone at home ate at least one meal together daily.
  19. We went to the Tenement Museum just this past May on my daughter's senior trip. We just walked in and bought a tour that was leaving in about half an hour. So it is possible to get a last minute tour. But to get the one you want it probably is best to make arrangements in advance. It was fun, but there are so many fun things to do in NYC.
  20. Have you seen the Key to Algebra series of workbooks. It really steps the child through how to do it and it is inexpensive. It is not always recommended but I like it to help a child get started on the concepts and it is gentle. I used it with my oldest. He really struggled understanding fractions until I did the Key To Fractions set with him. And as Lanny said I would try Khan Academy also.
  21. What I did with one of mine was to work the problems on the white board, every single one. And it was like they were teaching me. I would write something down and they would say the next step. I think doing it together gave her more confidence. And by way of encouragement, my biggest math hater fell in love with math at the calculus level and is now a math major at college. She calls all the time with pure in her voice at the "hard" problems she is getting to do next. She loves math. And will tell you she still does not like arithmetic.
  22. Strong students can have severe test anxiety. I have one that did well in high school but her SAT score was not that good. (We did not take the ACT). However she made a 4.0 in college. She does well with the tests for classes but for some reason she freezes for these high stake standardized tests.
  23. Just wanted to brag on my youngest. She has had a hard year. She suffers from anxiety complicated by losing her brother just over a year ago. She has been having a hard time moving away from home and the adjustment to college and how much studying she needs to do. She allows herself little to no down time. Last Friday was her first college test -- in Calc 1. That morning while running she tripped over a manhole cover and went flying. She hit hard on the asphalt hurting her hip, both knees, and both elbows. That was before 7 in the morning. Her test was at 6 that evening. She went the entire day without pain meds so she could be alert for the test (and made all her classes, labs, and reviews). Her prof told her as she was leaving class today that while the official grades are not out until Thursday, she made a 100!
