  1. I got a special Christmas ornament -- two snowmen with the words "Greatest Grandpa and Grandma". Yep. We are to be grandparents for the first time. Another special one was a knock on the door and opening it to see my son! He said he was not coming home for Christmas this year. (He lives out of state)
  2. I have all of them here (or did until about an hour ago). Son said he wasn't coming home (he lives in California), but knocked on our door last night and surprised us. He is here for 4 days. Daughter and son-in-law came to spend the evening and gave us our first present -- an ornament to tell us we will be grandparents in June! My first grandchild!
  3. We got our scores and are beyond happy with the results. She will not be taking it again. So glad to have testing behind us!
  4. Barrons has books that focus only on math or reading or writing. They also have a book called SAT 1600. We used the math and 1600 books. We also used Khan academy. I think the best tip I can give is take lots of practice tests (on paper) under timed conditions. We did one about every 2 weeks. It was our school for the day -- the remainder of our school days were busy to make up for lost time, but the practice tests were worth it.
  5. We bought ours the day after Christmas the year we got married -- in 1983. We don't plan on replacing it this year. It still looks good. I hope it lasts at least another 5 years -- until my youngest graduates college.
  6. Anyone else not have scores? Are we the only ones?
  7. And now I cannot get into the college board site. This is going to be a long day. :confused1:
  8. Ours are not there either. My daughter is pacing behind me. I think we have checked a hundred times already.
  9. Anyone else's teen take this this morning. This is her first try.
  10. Well for her 10th grade year (focus on essay writing), she did one paper per literature book that we did not study in depth (about 10), and one paper per history chapter (which included some research and was about 12). She also wrote up about 9-10 science labs and did one in depth research paper of about 10 pages that she presented at two different places. During this year she also wrote and edited a complete novel. Writing is fun for her so this was quite a bit of writing, but she write well and fast. As for the timed SAT essays, we are only working on these now during her junior year. it is not required anymore. She will take the SAT in December and I'm only having her do a few of these.
  11. For my daughter, who is also a writer, I found that I needed to take a year to write formal essays. I also had her read and analyze good essays. Formal writing and creative writing are different; the voice is different; the style is different. So the formal writing was for school and she could do as much creative writing as she wanted in her free time. Linda
  12. My daughter has used Saxon from the beginning and just this week started the Calculus book. She is scheduled to take the SAT Dec 1 and just took the PSAT so I do not have actual scores, but on all practice tests I have given her, she has only missed 2-3 problems in the two math sections combined. So I think Saxon will be fine.
  13. Well she is now taking the PSAT for real. I'm nervous.

Good luck to her! My son is also taking it today, though he is in 9th grade, so not for real yet.

My girl took it yesterday. Yikes!

  14. 1. Take daughter to piano competition 2. Wait (patiently?) for results from honor choir audition 3. Work on organizing craft/sewing room 4. Work on Bible lesson for AWANA tomorrow 5. Stop by grocery store Update: Not a good day. We found out just before leaving for piano competition, that while she made the honors girls choir, she did not make the honor mixed choir (harder to get into). Good, right. No, she made the mixed choir the last too years. So she is in tears. And the piano competition was a disaster. She forgot one whole page of a song she has been playing from memory all week. At least grocery shopping and the Bible lesson are done.
  15. Just remember you did the best you could at the moment. I have messed up so many times. I have told my adult children that I know I made mistakes and in hindsight I would have done some things differently. BUT I cannot go back and redo those times. I did what I though was best for everyone at that moment. All i can do is be the best mom to my adult children I can from this moment forward. And apologize for the mistakes of the past. But let them go; don't let them hurt the relationship from this point forward. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Linda
  16. I have two adult daughters (both in their 20's). Maybe I can help.
  17. This is around the age we got ours an adult study Bible and a Bible cover of their choice.
  18. search for homeschool code on the college board site.
  19. I'm having my daughter do Barron's SAT math book. I has tons of math problems to practice. They also put out separate ones for reading and writing. The writing on focuses mostly on the essay, it seems (I haven't used it).
  20. I have used Saxon for 4 children. Just finished the Advanced Math book with the 4th. Do every problem. The way I do it is make them redo a lesson if I find they are being sloppy and using me to correct things like copying a problem wrong. Don't redo the lesson if they do not understand. I think it is important to teach a lesson. In the end, it makes it go faster. And I have also put a timer on my children at times. Even if they never finished a lesson in the time I set before the timer, they always did it under the set time with the timer. I never understood why. Make certain they know their math facts well. This greatly reduces the time for the lesson and the accuracy. Saxon does work. Math always takes time to learn. And the three I have that have learned math this way -- two are engineers who did very well in college. The third is in nursing school. (Youngest still in high school).
  21. Yes, we make mint ice cream with fresh mint. It is fabulous. Bruise the mint leaves, then heat them in the milk. Let cool and stain out the mint. I'm not certain how much milk we used, but I do know we doubled the recipe and needed two cups of mint leave. It is so ery good. Linda
  22. Well, my child who is great at writing and competitive singing actually like Algebra far better than the "plain" math. She hated all math until we got to Algebra, then tolerated it. I will say she did not like geometry. So no suggestions, but maybe some hope it will get better.
