  1. I only know the film of 'Jane Austen Bookclub'. I like it for fun :)
  2. I know it has only been published in 2014, But did anybody already used it? As what grade level? What did you use before? Could it work in a European context or would you consider it 'too' American for non Americans? What output has been asked? / what was the workload?
  3. It depends on the summer what we do. Sometimes unfinished subjects (geography) Often math to keep it fresh. This year it will be French, Science and Technical Education. French will be reading and making french vocabulary crosswords. Technical education will be a lot of practical projects. We will have time to finish them properly. Science will be Physical science and chemistry, so again a lot of hands on activities.
  4. We like BJU Heritage 6. Unfortunetly their 7th grade book is not a continuation from grade 6 So for next year we will use SCM Middle Age/Renaissance /Reformation I don't know what we'll do after that :)
  5. At home mother didn't read aloud as soon as you could read on your own. So I remember only readings from the bible and from: 'Jip and Janneke' http://s.s-bol.com/imgbase0/imagebase3/large/FC/6/8/7/0/1001004002520786.jpg I think Jip and Janneke are typical dutch, typical for their timeframe, and one of the first Dutch childrenbooks for young children. Pluk van de Petteflet was read aloud at school: http://s.s-bol.com/imgbase0/imagebase/large/FC/6/5/3/9/1001004002069356.jpg
  6. Arts Lessons - 60 euro / year folkdance - 50 euro / year Day activities during schoolholiday: 8 euro / day Summercamp: 150, 300, 200 euro / week Two of them are all in, one just daycamp but with ponies Belgium is pretty socialistic in some ways. The positive side of it are cheap youth activities.
  7. Lectures Thematiques (Hachette) has questions at the bottom of the page and some french to french explanations of hard words. We use History and Art History so far. We also use 'A mots contes' from Belin, these are leveled readers with a wide assortiment of texts. These also have questions at the bottom of the page.
  8. Comes this: http://www.amazon.fr/Français-6e-Loeil-plume-Programme/dp/2701149878/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1431120610&sr=8-3&keywords=L%27oeil+et+la+plume After A Mots Contes CM2? Thanks to the A Mots Contes books dd likes finally French, and I don't want to disturb that :)
  9. I alway 'pay' my work at the end of the year with some lectures for me: TWSS, TtC, SCM dvd box, IEW speech boot camp, WTM online homeschool conference :)
  10. So far so good, I'm on the 13th canto already. The text isn't extreme hard in Dutch and as I have an annotated edition it isn't that difficult to read as everything I don't understand is explained at the same page :)
  11. When I was in searche for a poetry program next year, I got the impression Grammar of Poetry was a litlle bit more geared to elementary school level. I might got a wrong impression. Therefore it didn't fit in our plans. With my dd who will have one leg in grade 8 and one leg in grade 9 next year, I plan: http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Introduction+to+Poetry%3A+Forms+and+Elements+Study+Guide/022728/1300910164-1150877 HTH
  12. We only did the 'meet the Romans' workshops several years ago, and dd did not like it. It didn't help that the first lesson was focused on the map of Europe, Italy and where you can find Rome. (Grade 3-4 stuff here) And that what he said was written on the powerpoint. ( we read faster then he speaks) I was glad I tried Lukeion this way before enrolling on a Latin or Greek course. I've no experience with other Lukeion courses.
  13. I don't own it, but did you contact the publisher? If it is / becomes available as PDF/ e-book? That is what I would try....
  14. I got boxes today :) I recieved my Dante today! Somehow I managed to order a readable edition with footnotes and explanation notes! So I've read the first cantico today, and I think I can handle this with al those notes :) My edition is republished by a poet from an older edition. It is not the most current or most scientific translation, but for 6 euro's one takes what ones can get.
  15. I've been brave: I ordered a Dutch translation of Dante at an online secondhands bookshop. I'm Very intimidated to start... Further I think I need to look up some words... Too many unknown words in the opening post :) While waiting on delivering I just read something easy: Eva's daughters by Lynn Austin
  16. Wrapping up? How does that look like? ;) Belgian Summervacation starts July 1st, but the examcommission is only closed between 7/15 and 8/15, schools start september 1st. With almost 2 months to go, a math exam at june 18 th we have to keep the flame burning a little while. We skipped a little bit of the load though, as we did more exams this year then planned, so we are a little bit tired now.
  17. We don't have a seal, and I live in Europe what makes things different, and we plan to continue homeschooling bilingually. Dutch is the mother tongue, English the second language, French and German are foreign languages (we just do language arts and literature for these two) As I'm raised in the Netherlands it seems odd to me to read a book in translation other then your mothertongue. So for spanish I would expect you read books originally written in Spanish. But that is my culture. What we do: In Dutch: Part of Math, Part of History, Latin, Greek, Literature (no translations) In English: Main part of math, part of History, Geography, Science, Literature (no translations) French as Foreign Language German as Foreign Language We don't have transcripts, we do have exit exams in grade 12. All the exams will be in Dutch except the oral exams for English, French and German, these will be completely in that language.
  18. I don't think There is a need to worry. In my area they should know it inside out at age 13 the vocational track at age 15... But I understand your problem, we have it with grammar... I might be a matter of interest. Interesting things will be easier remembered then not so interesting stuff, and what is interesting depends on the child :)
  19. Thank you for organizing this! Just attended prof. Carol and I'm glad to get the chance to get a feeling of her teachingstyle before buying expensive items ( and shippings to Europe, and custom charges to get it delivered) What a enthousiasm she has! I'm looking forward to the others!
  20. Dd likes the books, not so the assignments. We are almost done :)
