  1. I've never used WP, but am trying to implement Konos. Here's a recent thread on Konos. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/543358-konos-some-questions-for-those-who-use-it/?p=6208957 I hope this helps.
  2. How about how the circulatory system functions and how the immune system works? Hth
  3. Sorry that he had to encounter people like that reporter. It sounds like he handled himself well. He is doing such a great job. Keep up the good work. It's a jungle out there.
  4. I say keep chugging along. Your kids are young. Do science year round if you want. In the summer you can do less reading and more experiments. science is fun for kids. I was using RSO, but then my older 2 got interested in molecules. All because I read to them the prelevel chemistry book from RS4K. So, I stop RSO and will focus on molecules. Ideally, I would like to use bfsu, but that is not happening right now. ...... You'll be redoing these science experiments again in a few years. Just like history. :)
  5. Congratulations! We got one a year ago.....he's my fourth child. :) I don't know how old your kids are, but my toddler likes to lay on him. :p I guess she thinks he's a big pillow or something.
  6. Proclick spines also come in different colors. I have black, white, frost, blue. I don't know if that'll help. The color dots sound better.
  7. We school year round. We take breaks around mid-Sept to October for play time outside. Then take 2 weeks off for Thanksgiving. Then take mid-dec. to mid-Jan off.
  8. I'm no expert, but I'll make a few suggestions. Get your phonics book and see where he is at. Read to him while you are reading to your 4 year old. Do the same activities as you are doing for your other child and see how he reacts. Talk to his teacher and see where he needs to be at for K. See how he is doing in prek too. I know someone who attends an online charter school for k. Before starting k they expected him to know his alphabet and to count 10 objects. I would x-post this with the learning challenges board. I know you said that he does not have any lc issues, but just in case they have other information / advices. Good luck and best wishes.
  9. Since you don't know much about SM , I'd like to say that a lot of people don't like it because it's a lot of books that one has to go back and forth for. On the other hand , a lot of people do like it. :) Personally, I like it. I highly recommend getting the home instructors guide. Very useful. You can find lots of SM books through consignment sales.
  10. 1. Bear snores on 2. Put me in the zoo from the big book of beginners book or something like that 3. A lot of Dr. Seuss' book 4. Press here 5. The strawberry, the little mouse and the big hungry bear 6. A Children's bible 7. In a People's House Eta. I forgot brown bear brown bear and the rest. (Polar bear and panda bear)
  11. As for the hook, I knew someone who wrote like that. Now that you mention it, I wonder how he didn't smear words........must of had his arm up?
  12. Sorry no advice, but wanted to pitch in. Don't worry about teaching your younger child. I'm a lefty and am from the generation that ps tried to make me write with my right hand. no biggie. My handwriting turned out fine. :) At least I think so.
  13. Just thinking....I haven't been there done that. But I would focus more on moral support, hugs, being a good listener, letting him watch you teach your kids. I think Math and reading are important, but perhaps let him get adjusted for a bit. This could be overwhelming for him too. It can't be easy to realize your behind. Perhaps some educational dvds? Popular mechanics for kids? I like mythbuster too. Just to keep him busy and happy. You know....start off slow. Just math and audiobooks, then content subjects in a month or so? I'm sure you already do this, but feel him out, look for signs of what he wants to do, etc.
  14. I don't think Sylvan is the answer since the legalities are not worked out yet. Sorry no advice here. But he is so lucky to have you in his life. :grouphug: :grouphug:
  15. There are a few kumon books that I like. First tracing, or tracing if he's advanced. Also like easy maze or simple mazes for that age. Since he likes to write possibly the one titled are you ready for kindergarten (pencil workbook ). This has him tracing his letters. I also like five in a row. ASL sounds like a great suggestion. I can't remember what you said about math...I'm about to start right start math games with my 4 1/2.. not as advanced as others around here, but I was afraid of getting flaked as well. Lol.
  16. I formally taught phonics when my oldest was 3 1/2 because he loved to learn and he knew his letters and simple phonics (thanks to leapfrog videos) around 20 months old. I didn't think about starting earlier (not that one should) because I was a little busy. :) My second oldest is now 4 1/2. I just started with Singapore math 1a, but once a week. I've been formally using phonics pathways since she was 4. Here we just do this once a week. I also do fiar. (Not all the activities ) This sounds harsh, but I do it at their pace. If my child is willing, then I start.
  17. I just looked through the Molecules book by Theodore Gray on Barnes and Noble and it looks like what I want. I looked on Amazon, but it didn't show as many pictures as the one on Barnes and nobles.
  18. Wow! That's a great website Farrar! I didn't realize it's free! I got a free periodic table that not only has pictures to represent the elements, but in color too! :) :hurray: Thanks.
  19. Thank you Tawlas. I actually think of getting the Molecules one (since I have the Basher book for Elements). For me, my kids are young and they just want to build molecules. And then fight with them. lol So, I like to say I'm a water molecule (I have molly mod to build) and have a pretend fire to evaporate the water molecules and it breaks up into O2 and H2 molecules. Or have an acetic acid molecule built and a sodium bicarbonate molecule built and put them together to explode. Something like that. Problem is I don't know what a sodium bicarbonate molecule looks like and I need more examples. Tawlas, someone told me about this site. http://www.periodicvideos.com/ This is just for fun. I'm not actually using this as a curriculum. It's an interest led project. Albeit expensive, but one nonetheless.
  20. Thank you for your suggestions Farrar. I love the periodic table site! My 2 oldest love the basher books. I just bought the Elements one. I forgot about it.
