  1. That's great! Good going! I'd put one of those waving arms smiley faces, but I can't since I'm on my phone. :)
  2. That's great! (Your dd's test not your mil's comment) My ds and dd are like yours except she will let me read to her. I chalk it up to that she's not as competitive as my ds. I have to teach her separately. she does better when we are one on one. Keep up the good work!
  3. We actually lived in MI for a little while (2012?). We went to Impression 5 a lot. Did you go there too?
  4. I would start her on easy readers. Stop the program for a little while and have her read or buddy read.
  5. Thank you Jackie and OP. I'm just a little nervous about buying another math program that I may not implement because it's teacher intensive. Especially since my current one is working for my oldest. I think I'm still going to think about it. :) I think I'll stick with education unboxed for now. :)
  6. I think it depends on your child for what age you can start. I started my oldest with books from the CTC when he was 4? They have books for prek level. Something like Can you find me or Visual Preception. Those were done orally. I believe logic is important to learn. At this point in time, he digs mind benders, mathematical reasoning, and balence benders. I just bought a few logic games such as goblet gobbles, mighty mind, and castle logix. Someone from this forum recommended those. My oldest loves no stress chess. Without a doubt, for youngsters I believe logic games are the way to go. ETA I don't know how to teach logic, so that is why I look to ctc and games to fulfill that need.
  7. You can go to www.dltk-teach.com for free letters and numbers printables. Kindergarten is generally a relaxed year. Phonics and math are usually whats covered. i agree in that I would make it a fun year. It sounds like your dc is not the workbooky type right now. So a more hands on approach may be what is needed for your curriculums. Logic of English and All about reading are both phonics programs for kinesthetic learners. LOE (I think) has handwriting as well. It'll be spring soon, so some nature walks would be great. Here's my thread on what to do on a nature walk. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/532224-nature-walks/?p=6006676 Reading lots of books/story time at the library, trips to the children's museum/zoo are always fun. Here's soror's thread on some ideas for a relaxed math year http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/499692-looking-to-do-some-relaxed-math-here-want-to-share-ideas/. In the beginning, it's a lot of work to determine what's a good fit for your family. Good luck and enjoy! :)
  8. I'm sorry to derail OP, but I was wondering..........how parent intensive is Rightstart B? or RS for that matter? I'm looking at this program for my 4 1/2 year old. I've been reading threads and it looks like a good fit for her. She's very hands on and loves to play. I can relate to that. :) I'm already in the middle of Singapore math with my ds and I'm not too shabby in math.......so would this be a lot of work for me? Shall I just get the RS games kit? If there is such a thing? She can already add simple single digit #s. W What is your opinion? Thanks!
  9. I feel the same way. With my toddler she likes to play with the princess figurines (I'm prince Eric :P), magna tiles, tangram puzzles or playdough. With all 3 of my children we play chase, legos, kinetic sand, paint, or playdough. I think with my older 2, I went to the museums a lot. Now, I stay home a lot.s So, I'm thinking of ways to play with my toddler while my older 2 play with each other. They are always asking me to play with them. Unless they are on the Wii. lol Enjoy. They are growing up so fast!
  10. 1. Phonics Pathways - very thorough 2. Singapore Math 3. First Language Lessons (very gentle, generally done orally) and Writing with Ease (skip the handwriting part) 4. Story of the World 5. Real Science Odyssey/BFSU/Real Science 4 kids 6. All about spelling Of course we don't do all these things every week, just #1, 2 and FLL. To be honest, I haven't done anything in Sotw since summer. And of course it being kindergarten I don't need to. :) Also, some would say that spelling is not needed until 3rd grade. We do science because my children love experiments.
  11. I don't know anything about Rightstart, but am considering it for my 2nd child. I'm considering it because I've been reading some threads and it seem that it's a very hands on approach and I think my 2nd child is like this. So hard to tell since she's so young. I am using Singapore math for my oldest. I really like it. I chose it because it got good reviews. I will say that I think my son is a kinesthetic learner like my 2nd child. That being said reasons why I think this program is working for him: 1. For level one, I was using the textbook which is colorful (so visually apprealing). Currently not using the textbook for level 2. 2. I use Math-u-see blocks as manipulatives. 3. He's good at it, so he does 4 or 5 problems at a time, and he's done. From my reading I think Rightstart is for kinesthetic learners and singapore isn't. I think using the manipulatives along with Singapore math is good enough for my son. hth. ETA: We don't right down all the answers. Most of the time it's done orally.
  12. 1. I am sam books - some are free online 2. Nora gaydos books 3. Preschool prep books Does it have to be a book? If not: 1. Progressive phonics - online free 2. Reading pathways - I like this one. 3. There's a book titled I can read now! I can't remember who the author is. Will try to come back and let you know. Your child may have to do a few more lessons for this book. Hth
  13. I try to find something that would interest them both. For example, the Wizard of Oz, The Swiss Family Robinson and the Magic Tree House. For something that my 4 year would not like I just read one or 2 chapters. depending on how long the chapters are. For Example, Mr. Popper's Penguin have very short chapters. My kids don't fall asleep while we are reading to them. It just relaxes them. :) Sometimes, My 2 year old will be asleep and I can read to one child while my dh reads to the other. This is when we let them choose what they want. FYI, right now our current read aloud is the prelevel Chemistry from RS4K. you use that right? :D
  14. Welcome! I use mind benders and balence benders with my oldest. I haven't used building thinking skills, but plan to. Just haven't had time. I just started mind benders with my 4 1/2 year old. I think logic is important and the ctc books are like games to my kids. Hth.
  15. Ah where to start? :) my favorites and my children's favorite may be 2 different things. Lol I love phonics pathways, books from the critical thinking Co, FIAR, rs4k, rso, Singapore math with math u see blocks, WWE, and FLL. Thankfully, they love being read to. I love the Who was series, mathstart and sir cumference books.
  16. I don't know if this will help, but hopefully will be reassuring. I know someone who learned how to speak both Chinese and English since he was a baby. He was raised in the U.S. he is now a pharmacist. I just like to provide examples or tell people what I would do. I hope this is reassuring.
  17. I will add that I think mathmatical reasoning may be a stand alone math curriculum. But we use it one level below because it's something he likes to do and can do on his own. I forgot about games. We've only tried No stress chess and tangrams and those have been great. :)
  18. I would and I am currently paying for the use of the library in another county.
  19. Mathmatical reasoning, balance benders and mind benders from the critical thinking company. Logic lollipop book 1 so far. I really don't know how to describe them except that Mathmatical reasoning is.......math. :p. My son loves the books from the critical thinking company. Perhaps someone else can describe them. Hth.
  20. Same here. Ironically, it's clean clothes on the floor in the laundry room. :) It actually is useful there because my toddler generally have to be changed at least once a day. :) At least that's what I'm telling myself. Sorry no help. Just that you are not alone.
