Poll: Beef Stew - Tomato Base or Beef Base?
MamaT replied to eaglei's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have made both, but my family seems to prefer the tomato based. I simmer my stew beef in a little olive oil with one chopped onion, fill my pot about half full of water, add about 16oz. tomato sauce, salt/pepper, and let that cook on medium high heat for a while. Then I add whatever leftover veggies I have. If I don't have any, I add a bag of frozen soup vegetables. When that has cooked for about 30 minutes, I add a bag of whole wheat noodles. It's ready when they're done. I do have to add water back to the stew as it cooks. I have a recipe that actually cooks in the oven, and it is the best beef stew I have ever eaten. Sadly, it is so time intensive that I have only cooked it once or twice. -
Poor man's Hamburger Helper? Seriously?
MamaT replied to MomOfOneFunOne's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My mom used to make something similar to hamburger helper, and now when I make it the kids call it Mema's casserole. It tastes much better than hamburger helper! 1 1/2 pound ground beef 1 lb. cooked medium shell pasta 1 can tomato sauce 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 can water 1 cup shredded cheddar salt/pepper 2 tablespoons chili powder Mix it all together in a 9x13 Pyrex dish and cook it for about 30 minutes on 350. It is one of my kids' favorites. -
The only time I've ever been like that was when I was pregnant. I would cry all the time. Are you sure you're not pregnant??? Being tenderhearted is a wonderful trait. :001_smile:

My whole family loves just plain ole' cooked cabbage. I also make Bubble & Squeak. You cook the cabbage, make mashed potatos, sautee a large onion, then mix it all together in a rectangular baking dish. Bake it on 350 for about 30 minutes. I also make corned beef and cabbage. Cabbage is a favorite around here.

Yes, with all four boys. No regrets, no problems.

If you eat early, how do you make it to breakfast?
MamaT replied to joannqn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We always have a snack of some sort before bed. We eat dinner at different times, depending on activities - but always have a bedtime snack! -
That's great! I know your family is relieved.

I was getting my nails done, which was rare. I was leaving the following Saturday to go on a trip with my dh for our 20th wedding anniversary. My bf had all my kids at her house - 2 1yos, a 3yo, 8yo, 13yo, and 15yo. She called me and told me what was going on. Her brother was living in NY and could see from his window. I went to her house and watched it on TV. It was hard to believe that this could actually happen here in the US. My 13yo told me that day that he was joining the Marine Corp as soon as he was old enough. I didn't think much about it then, but he joined when he turned 18. He never changed his mind.

Today was an answer to prayer!

How wonderful! I can imagine it could get lonely in your situation. I'm glad you found some like-minded people to hang with. -
S/O: Regarding your typing education...

I took typing in high school (way back in 1979!), and there was only one boy in the class. -
How much do your teenaged boys eat????
MamaT replied to Jennifer in MI's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yep, that sounds about right. My tall, skinny 17yo never stops eating. He has friends over on the weekend and I have actually hidden food from them just so we'll have SOMETHING to eat on Monday. :001_smile: I let him at it, as long as the food is healthy. I have to say, my grocery budget is outrageous. -
My 11yo is using this book right now. As far as I can tell so far, the text is secular. I had a friend of mine who teaches high school algebra come over and look at it, along with LoF Algebra. I was very nervous because for 14 years I have used nothing but Saxon, with great results. My 13yo dd begged to try LoF so I bought it to look at and then, of course, my 11yo son wanted to do LoF too. My friend told me that all the topics that needed to be covered were covered. I am going to test my kids with Saxon tests from time to time, but she assured me they were legitimate to use alone. ETA: I just realized you were asking if both of the LoF Pre-Algebra books had to be completed before Algebra, then the answer is no. I misunderstood your question.

What to wear to visit a monastery?
MamaT replied to MamaT's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh my goodness, I am glad I asked. I would never have thought of something to cover our heads or closed toe shoes. Thank you! -
My children and I are visiting a local monastery tomorrow. We are studying the middle ages this year. I found out there is an Orthodox Christian monastery in our area and called and made an appointment to visit. I forgot to ask them what we should wear. We are not Orthodox and I surely don't want to offend them. Should I wear a skirt? Would the kids be okay in jeans? Any other tips or advice?

does your 10-15yo have their 'own' computer?
MamaT replied to mazakaal's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dh and I both have our own laptops. My 17yo has a desktop of his own and we are currently shopping around for a laptop for my 13yo. My two 11yos share a desktop in the living room. -
I'm usually much faster, but the nonsense words really slowed me down! I averaged about 70 on the test, but usually type much faster. I used to work part-time as a medical transcriptionist and typed about 120 (not on that test!) when I was doing it every day.
