  1. Thank you. I do have some documentaries, and online History sites that I did not list. Maybe I should have. I will be spending the day scouring Gutenberg, and AO to see what I can find. Common Sense, I forgot to list that, I know that is online for free. Thanks for reminding me. Maybe I can pull this off without spending any money before our move. (no longer hyperventilating)
  2. Edited: Added list of Gutenberg books below. I need some book recommendations that relate to American History. We are currently packing-up, cleaning, and getting our house in Mexico rent ready in preparation for our move. As a result, I am trying not to buy more books until after we move and do not have access to a library. Ds (14) finished up his History rotation early, so we opted for American History until we begin ancients at the beginning of his 9th grade year. I have a wonderful list of poetry, documents, and books I pulled from Sonlight and other areas, but with the move happening at the end of March.... So are there any titles worth looking at that are available on Gutenberg, Librivox, or some other site. My guess is that I just need to round up enough for the 1700's. Then I will be able to unpack in our new home, and find or buy more books. The books I have on me, and not boxed up are. Guests, Dorris The Landing of the Pilgrims, Daugherty The Witch of Blackbird Pond The Double Life of Pocahontas, Fritz The Last of the Mohicans Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jennison The Sign of the Beaver A copy of The Declaration of Independence Online I have found. Mayflower Compact “To My Dear and Loving Husband†by Anne Bradstreet Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Letters of John Adams Articles of Confederation Ideas?
  3. First off :grouphug: . Go ahead and leave them with family. AS the pp said, you know what you can handle. There is no need to make the situation more stressful for you than it already is.
  4. My son is looking for book recommendations. He is looking for myths (Greek, Roman, Norse) I think we are leaning Norse, as he hasn't read much, but he is open to just about anything. He is also looking for a novel recommendation. He will be ordering some books, and wants to get a good variety of genres. If it helps, here are some of his interests. He loves History. Is very interested in studying anything about wars and enjoys reading biographies. He loved The Wonder Book For Boys and Girls, and Beowulf (NYE). In general, he just loves to read. If you have any question, please ask. Thanks in advance.
  5. We are making a move to the state of Idaho. It will involve a road trip, and a few visits with family along the way. DH would like to drive up the Ca coast (leaving from San Diego) to our first family members house in the San Francisco Bay area. After that we will be traveling up to Eugene, Oregon, to visit more family. Finally, we will drive up to Portland, and across to Boise. I am looking for ideas on where to stop along the way while traveling up the coast. Dairy/cheese farms, gold rush related sites, something the kids may find neat, or maybe even somewhere we can camp. I am also thinking of having a short hotel stay in Portland, but have no idea where. What to see while there? Is it better to plan the stay on week-ends or week days? We will be leaving late March and are willing to draw it out a little, since DH does not have to start his knew job for roughly a month. We are not looking to have a luxury vacation and would like to be fairly low key. We have downsized quite a bit and will be traveling light (no Uhaul). We have 4 boys that are ages 3-14. If people can just shoot off ideas for me to research, that would be wonderful. Thanks.
  6. It wasn't an issue here. In fact, I think SOTW ignited their interest in Geography. I also hung up a world map that my dc and I could refer to and compare to the maps in the book. Each family and child is unique, though.
  7. You can also just google green smoothies. When I am in a hurry, I just toss in a hand full of Spinach, one apple, half a lemon, and flax or chia seeds. You can also toss in carrots, a dash of ginger, and change up the greens. I have used various types of Chard, kale, and whatever I see on sale. I buy frozen fruit (when not using apples or pears), but I have used fresh fruit when I find it at a really good price. I think others have given good ideas for saving money. I buy in season and on sale. DH is looking forward to starting a garden once we make our move to ID. Yippy!
  8. I was just about to ask the same question. I am so tired of having to sharpen pencils upteen times everyday.
  9. :grouphug: :grouphug: Thank you for sharing. it looks likes he was a very beautiful and happy young lady.
  10. You can take out some of the liquid (reserve just in case) and add in more H2O. You will need to add in a little of the other spices/liquid flavors you used. The reserved portion is in case the spiciness is too low after the liquid reduces.
  11. Do you speak French? recommendations will likely depend on that. Also, do you want a self study course, or are you open to an online option? If you do a search of the boards, you are likely to find many posts with valuable information. My children are not doing French, but off the top of my head.... Galore park's, So you really want to learn French, has had great reviews. I know there is a foreign service web site that has many languages, but I have heard it is dry. For online, The Potters School has great reviews. You may also look into buying a college text (if you speak French), and working through that. I have had luck buying old editions of college texts for about $3 on Half.com. You can also head to the local community college, and take a look at what they use. HTH
  12. ds: "Hey mom, I wonder if I can read a million books before I die. Hmmm. I think I'll try."

  13. I agree, you should not have told him that nanny speaks English. It's Ok, though. Ask nanny to continue speaking Spanish. No English at all. Ask her to repeat what he says in Spanish and question form. Can I have milk? Que si puedes tener leche? etc It will take time, but it works. BTDT. I would also stick to Spanish cartoons (even dubbed) and shows. Have nanny read books in Spanish over and over again. Music is great, too. Even if he never speaks it, he will understand it. I raised my kiddies in Mexico, and didn't even teach them English until they were 5. It is possible. I promise. HTH
  14. Yes it is. You can go to the local book stores and and ask for recommendations. They will let you know what books the local private schools are using. You may also try to keep her reading books in Spanish, and maybe even watching the Saturday children's shows. The SEP books might be useful if you can get your hands on them. HTH.
  15. Yuck!! I did not read the article. Even if the stuff on the floor is not fecal matter, that is not a situation any child should be living in.
  16. That sounds about right. I am on my third child and run though SM. all but one of my dc didn't even start working on Math without me by their side until the second book. Even so, they each were ready at different ages, months, points in the book. Expect to do some hand holding when long Division is introduced in the SM3 books. And don't worry. Each child comes around whe they are ready.
  17. Maybe you should try it as an audio book. I found it at the library, and the boys loved it. A few months afterwards, my oldest read it on his own. I don't think they would have liked it otherwise.
  18. If the computer is really calculating 18% tips, then the taxes would be taken out of her check. That would be why her checks are so small. If this other server owed money, it is either because the systme isn' really calculating the 18%, and this server had allocated tips. (I'll explain below) Or she made a lot of money for the amount of deductions she had. The above post explains it well. The check is taxed based on PRESUMED tips. When your dd gets her W2, check to see if there are allocated tips listed. If so, this means that the amount of tips reported by the system is not the amount the federal government presumes she has made. In that case, the system is not reporting any where near 18%. They may be giving her the 18%, but not reporting it. If she does not have allocated tips and ends up owing, then it is because of her deductions. Basically she is bumped into a higher tax bracket. I hope that makes sense.
  19. No advice, just hugs. :grouphug: :grouphug: I can only imagine how you feel.
  20. I am not sure if this has already been posted, but I know many here are watching what is happening in Russia for various reasons. http://www.foxnews.c...s-adoption-ban/
