  1. Some body mentioned this in one of the other threads, and I have seen it mentioned in the past. I think I can imagine how multiple Sciences are done in other countries, but I can't seem to wrap my head around the multiple Maths. What does it look like in middle school? High school? If your child is doing Int. Algebra, what other math would you do along side it? Completely lost here, I assume, for science, multiple disciplines are studied, but spread out over the years. If you were schooled in a country that did thus, could you please paint me a picture? If you homeschool in this way, would you please share? What do you feel are the benefits, draw backs, etc? Thanks.
  2. Bumping, because I am also curious about this class.
  3. I have discussed these things with my son. He finds it frustrating, but in the end will suck it up. I am waiting for the grades to be posted on line, because she pulled my son aside and said the online grades had previously been incorrect, and she believed he had a B. I do find it irritating that he was not given a chance to rectify the group project issue and plan on meeting with her to discuss what he needs to do to be able to get a better grade next time, and what the rules are for making up, or redoing assignments. My son's main concern is if this C will be a huge blemish on his transcript. My gut tells me that, although it may not look great, his rigorous work load and (hopefully) improved grade next time will help him in the long run. I guess we will see. Thank you , everyone, for your insight.
  4. See, this is how I feel, but the grade is what it is. I just want to get something positive out of this and keep him from beTing himself up about it.
  5. It was most of the team, and all their grades suffered. I don't think it is unheard of for many high school student to not care about their grades. I spoke with the coach immediately, and she made it seem like the one assignment would not have much of an affect. What makes it seem worse for ds is that none of the other coaches give writing assignments, so he feels many students are getting an easy A, for less work than he has given for a C. He feels he can get an A next semester, but I stressed that he insist he not get grouped with the slackers if there is another group assignment. It did teach him one lesson. In another class, after working with an assigned parter for half the period ( they fell asleep), he asked to do the project on his own. The teacher understood, and allowed it. He was even granted extra credit for going above and beyond.
  6. Ds is attending a public high school this year. He has eight periods and has managed to get A's in every class, except PE. It is looking like his final grade will be a C. Ds has been very frustrated because he has the only PE teacher who assigns essays and journal entries, and it takes away from his study time. One of their exams was a group fitness activity. During the the activity, students had to do certain fitness tasks, while the other students recorded what they did in the student's journal. Journals were then returned to the student at the end of the period. Ds noticed that his partner kept no record of what he did, and complained to his teacher. I spoke with her, and she kind of brushed it off like no big deal. Said he was working hard, and not to worry. He got an F on that one assignment, which was weighed as a test. He has A's and B's on his other assignments. This averages out to a C. He is very stressed out, because he feels he has worked very hard with non results. He offered to redo the fitness activity, but was told it could only be done in groups, and that setting up the course was time consuming. He offered to get a group of students who also wanted to bring up that grade and would be willing to do set up and clean up. No go. At this point he felt there wasn't much else he could do and did not want to push so hard as to seem disrespectful. Help me think of what to say to him, to help him realize he did what he could, worked hard, and that it won't hurt him too much in the long run. Thanks.
  7. Thanks. We have all of the above and Mythology. My son is very familiar with Greek gods, but I heard such great things. Thanks to you both.
  8. Iliad, Odyssey, etc. do you listen before you read, during, or after? Would it be best to listen to the mythology first? What do you ladies/men think? Thanks.
  9. Thank you. When I searched marine science, these did not come up. Oddly enough, I found a few by searching physics living books. Go figure.
  10. I have to agree. I did go to college straight out of high school, but took time off after my first semester when my brother passed. I later decided to enroll in a community college. I was 7 1/2 months pregnant, but figured it would be harder if I didn't start getting used to it before my son arrived. It was a real struggle. I think I averaged about 3 hours of sleep a night. I had to learn to be very organized, multi-task like crazy, and pinch a lot of pennies. Looking back, I don't know how I did it and really admire those that go back to school later in life. It is not easy.
  11. My son is studying Marine Science at the moment, and we would love to add some outside reading. I did a forums search and found great suggestions for chemistry and physics (which we will use next), but nothing for Marine science. Any ideas? Thanks.
  12. Have you contacted La Jolla Country Day? If you need something further south, I'd try Eastlake. Both of those tests should be offered there.
  13. If you have sensitive skin, I would think that skin care should be your greatest focus. Basically, if you are starting with a great canvass, there won' be much make-up or work required. ;) Have you looked in to BB or CC creams? I find that they offer light coverage, skin benefits, and are kinder to "aging skin" than powders. I like Garnier, but you can likely get samples of different ones. You can also use a light lip liner to keep lip color from creeping out. I know there are lip bases/concealers available, but I am not to familiar with them. If you feel eyeliner on your top lid is too top heavy, go ahead and ditch it. You can use a business card under your lashes when you apply mascara on the bottom lashes. If it is still running over the process of going about you day, I suggest you find a different brand. Be sure you aren't rubbing you eyes without realizing it. I only wear make-up when going out. So this is likely the extent of the help I can offer. You may want to look at some make-up tutorial. Lisa Elridge comes to mind. HTH
  14. I just received an email from Target offering me the same credit counseling. Apparently, the breach goes further than they expected. It seems personal info of people who have shopped online was also stolen from the data base. I haven't shopped online sins Christmas of 2012, but I have the online account, so that is the concern. Oh boy, here I was thinking I was lucky I had only used cash at target in the last few months.
  15. I answered in the other thread, and used my high schooler as the reference point. I guess I should give you a new response using my middle schooler. There are just a few differences. I will come back and edit later.
  16. My oldest started attending a Magnet IB school this year after we moved back to the states. Things he has complained about or needed to learn include: 1. History text not being thorough and skipping over things. (PS texts tend to have snippets. We used a PS 11th grade History text the year before to get him used to the format) 2. Students seeming very dis-interested and talking over teachers, or speaking rudely to them 3. "I already learned this." 4. Learning to navigate multiple periods, and alternating bell schedule (block schedule) 5. Dirty bathrooms 6. getting used to changing in front of others for gym class. 7. I spent the first month really helping him to keep his binder organized, giving reminders, having him sit at the table for 5 minutes inserting handouts behind the proper tab. I also gave him an are where he could keep all graded assignments. This last part was very important, as at least one of his teachers recorded a recent grade wrong and required proof to change it. 8. Time management- At first, HW took him a lot longer. He had to get used to the format. Some classes have fill-in the blank, work sheets that seem to be prepping students to learn how to do notes, etc. We never did that kind of thing... The only worksheet type thing he had done was LL1 and 2. Suggestion: 1. Teach your child how to take notes out of a text book. I taught my son how to do notes similar to Cornell. He learned to outline in elementary, but I taught the textbook note taking last year and it transfered well to note taking in class. 2. Talk to your child about what it might be like, what they may see, your expectations, why you are teaching them the new skills, etc. 3. Make it clear that they can and should come to you ASAP if they ever feel they are struggling. It is easier to help them when the problem first arises, than after their grades have really suffered and the class has moved on. I told my son that the topics built on each other, yada, yada. 4. Be encouraging and ask about their day. Be prepared to dig a little, and offer help with school work. Overall, the process has gone smoothly for my son and he is doing very well. You can never be sure, until you try it. I was pleasantly surprised that he has done so well, as he was always the slow worker that could go down rabbit trails. I bought all the curriculum I would need for him this year (just in case), but have only pulled stuff for after schooling. I am well aware that as he gets older there will be less time to after schooling, though. My other son entered a performing arts middle school, and I have noticed he has more free time. We still homeschool the younger children. HTH
  17. I am a native English speaker who took in 5 ( yes FIVE) non native speaking teens (hubby's siblings). FLL 1/2 was great for them. We also did OPGTR, after making sure they knew their ABC's in English, followed by McGuffy readers. The lessons were solid and short enough that I never heard a complaint. After FLL we did Rod and Staff 3. All these things are easy enough to do and inexpensive. Plus, they could likely help your friend Lear along the way. HTH
  18. Hello everyone, I have been interested in purchasing some of the great books on cd, because I heard that video format was not necessary for most of them. Of coarse, once I started reading up and doing the research to decide which ones I wanted to start off with, someone mentioned that they felt having audible was a much better bargain. I am not very familiar with audible and was hoping to get some education on the subject. Are all the great courses available via audible.com? How does the subscription work? Any issues one should know about? Thanks so much.
  19. I agree with the precious posters, call you insurance company.
  20. Do you Know which one it is? Some allow you to teach ESL GED classes at local adult schools, or teach English abroad at a private school. Certification isn't always required abroad, but usually can help with better placement and salary.
  21. Is the Guerber, H. A. The Myths of Greece and Rome book at http://www.gutenberg.org/ Ok for the National Mythology exam? I see the Bibliography recommends the Dover text, but is this one very different?
  22. Yes, I finally figured out that this was the issue. This is exactly what I am doing. In Mexico salt usually isn't iodized, though. It is mostly cultural things. I have gone from always being the women with the least make-up to often feeling overdressed. After so many years in Mexico, my casual is no where near American casual. I have to remind myself that exchanges with men need to be dry(for lack of a better word). Lest they or their wives mistake me for a flirt. I can actually smell the chlorine in the faucet water. Yuck! I guess I am cheating a bit. At the last minute, hubby's work placement changed, and we ended up near the Mexican border. I am able to get lot's of the things I would otherwise miss.
