  1. Thank you for the offer. I went ahead an joined so that I ca do it. Really? Did you feel that the cost with shipping was worth it? I hadn't considered this option because I figured shipping would be ridiculous. Thanks.
  2. Hello everyone. I am planning on starting reception year with ds in the next two weeks, but just had two quick questions. I am planning on tinting out the colored copy masters, but wanted to be sure printing double sided wouldn't be a problem. Are there any pages that will be cut up? I have done MEap in the past, but not Reception. I have looked through it and didn't catch anything, but I thought it best to double check. Secondly, before I attempt to do it myself, does anyone have these combined into one PDF? Would you be willing to share. I don't want to pay extra per PDF. Thanks.
  3. Well, it is really a personal choice. When my children were younger, we crossed an international border (plus 30 min of driving) for a chess club once a week. I made a point to take them to the marshes, a museum, or local field trip in the morning to really make the trip worth while. The boys loved it and never complained.
  4. What stripe is referring to is not a tracking number. It is a label number that you can use to confirm that a package was delivered. You do not receive an email, or postcard confirmation, but it makes it possible to look up the media mail package and verify delivery. In the past, a trace had to be initiated if an mm package was lost, and it was harder to confirm it was delivered if a buyer said it was not. It seems that all packages must be scanned upon delivery now. I actually just sold a bunch of books in the last two weeks, and the lady at the post office was explaining it to me. If you pay for tracking, it allows you to "see" your package each time it is scanned. HTH
  5. I almost always buy used and receive and send things media mail. In eight years of homeschooling only two items did not arrive. The first time was quite a few years ago and the second was about a month ago. With the cost of shipping, I think people ae hesitant to upay for anything other than book rate.
  6. I just need to share a minor victory with everyone. Over the years ds1, my history guy, has truly struggled with Math. He attended a private school for first grade and was accelerated in Math without having a firm grasp on the foundations. I brought. Him home, started SM primary, and worked with him 1 on 1, which is how he prefers to work. He often said he hated math, worked very slowly, and complained the whole way, but I could tell he was learning and did well with CWP. There were times when I wanted to tear out my own hair, but we made it through SM and into the Lial texts. He started at a local magnet school last year for ninth and was placed into Geometry, so I hired a local college student to review with my son once a week while offering help with daily homework. As the year progressed he gained confidence and even started tutoring other students during lunch. Not only did he get the highest grade in his class, but he is finally starting to believe he can be good at Math. He chose to take Marine Biology instead of Physics last year, because he was unsure about his Math skills. Today, one month before school starts, he is looking forward to Physics and says he confident that his math skills are strong enough to allow him to do well. It seems like a small step in the right direction, but for this kid it is HUGE. He has confidence where in the past he had none. It took years, but I feel like he has finally turned a corner.

  8. Yes. I have discussed it in a few recent posts, if you'd like to search. Do you have any specific question! I'd say it is a very solid program. My dc heard Spanish everyday and understood it, so I liked that this program really teaches grammar and writing in Spanish. It forced them to improve those pesky mistakes that heritage speakers almost always commit, and their reading level improved tremendously.
  9. Wow, I'm surprised to see so many nay sayers. Go. Enjoy yourself. Immerse yourself in a new culture. Meet new people. You will miss your kids like crazy, but you will also likely come home rested, with a new perspective on life, and some cool things to add to your home school. I did this when my oldest three were younger. Dh and I had never gone on a vacation alone. I missed my dc like crazy, but it was still fantastic. I came home with inspiration for my cooking, a new energy for home schooling, and a whole new zest for life In general.
  10. If this is the case, then I would be upset. You need to sit down and have a real heart to heart with your dh.
  11. Thank you so much for posting. I have not yet read the article, but will be just after commenting. I remember being bullied in elementary school. I had multiple eye surgeries as a child, wore glasses, and an eye patch to help strengthen and correct a "wandering" eye. I was lucky because I developed and was seen as attractive. I began wearing contacts and dressing little more "stylish ". In sixth grade I began being invited to the cool kids events but never felt secure in my new position as part of the cool kids. Eventually I transferred out of the feeder school to a magnet school and had a good high school experience. Although I was one of the "popular" kids and seen as "pretty", I shied away from the parties I was invited to and chose not to date much at all. I think I really didn't trust people. I also think it is sad that my status changed based on my looks. How stupid is that? It was horrible, and I thought I was over it until my youngest was born with Infantile Esotropia. I dread the day that he might get made fun of for his eye issues. Kids, even young kids, can be so mean. Unfortunately, adults aren't always better. Every once in awhile I will have to speak to an adult that will respond by looking from side to side and asking loudly, "are you talking to me?" After many surgeries, I know my eye does not wander so much that someone wouldn't know I was talking to them. As far as it changing you as an adult, I think it really does. It took me a long time not to easily bristle at any comment I felt was even a little criticle. My husband tells me I am beautiful and I accept that he sees that, but I don't see it. I have heard it from enough people that I accept it, but I see myself as very normal and plain. It doesn't bother me, though. I am not focused on it, rarely wear make-up, and value being seen as smart more that attractive. I have even made an effort I. The past to draw attention away from my body/looks, but I am finally over how other people see me physically. Even so, I rarely wear glasses.
  12. It takes time. If you want to add more beans to your diet, you may need to do it slowly. Stick to twice a week for a few weeks, then add a third day for about a month or more. Also, soaking beans is supposed to help.
  13. I am the one that handles the budget. Dh tends to be a spender, so I guess you could say I have him on an allowance. Of course, I am a benevolent dictator. I asked him how much he needed for his travel to/from work each week and spending money, then set aside the money from each two week check and hand it to him each week. It has forced hi to think before he spends and stick to a budget. When I began this approach I actually sat down with him and had all our bills/payments written out with dates due and also had the Math worked out for him with total income in and total out. He is a very visual person, so I wanted him to see it all laid out. I also put myself on an allowance for groceries and household supplies. If the roles were different, I wouldn't mind making a list. I am a list person and find that totaling things up puts things in a new light. Sometimes seeing the total cost of something inspires me to get creative about meeting those needs. Dh declared long ago that I could be in charge of the money and his policy is not to question any of my money spending decisions, but I still try to involve him. He rarely even looks at out accounts, but I keep him informed. I would never hide it from him. As a pp mentioned earlier, if you are not able to see the finances, I would take it as a red flag. It seems like the two of you need to sit down for a heart to heart.
  14. I wouldn't think anything of it. Even if dh enjoys seeing a "hot" woman, it wouldn't bother me. I believe it is natural to look and appreciate qualities that you find pleasing to the eye. Now if he is leering at or drooling over these women, I'd take issue with it. In this case, it sound like a joke or tease. It may have been in bad taste, but I have never truly understood the father son teasing that goes on.
  15. Have you considered teaching your child to annotate texts that he reads? If you don't want writing I. The books, you can teach him to do it in a notebook. Also, I began teaching my ds to take notes from his textbooks at about that age. I taught him Cornell style notes, and it really helped. It took time, but it was worth it.
  16. Yes, Spring 2016 is the date I have. My oldest will just miss the old version. He graduates in 2017. I hate that he is basically a guinea pig.
  17. You must have a different edition than I do. Although mine is thin, it sits on my bookshelf next to the SAT blue book; They are the same height. As for the font size, I wear glasses and have had multiple eye surguries but can read it without glasses. With that said. We do not write in the book. My children write it down on a ie e of paper. Sometime I will write in a white board or sit down one on one and do it orally. It huts depends on my mood/needs that day. From your description of the book, I think having your fourth grader write the answers out might be best. HTH
  18. 10th grade. He is At an IB school, after having been home schooled through middle school. Organization has been a little bit of an issue, and he wants to focus on it before the Junior year grind.
  19. Has anyone used the Case It 4" binder?
  20. Well, maybe he'll have to rethink the zipper. Thanks. What brand makes dividers with pockets? It is imperative that ds be as organized as possible. Well likely be in search of a student planner, as well. Just throwing that out there. :D
